Front of cabinet. It makes doing your wash a real treat! This is a 1956 machine BTW. I always had to smile when I saw this POD. Even before I owned my 56. The mom and the little girl are having fun watching the machine do it's thing. However the little boy looks like he's worried that if he puts his jeans in there with that Surgilator,he may never see them in one piece again!! LOL! |

A beautiful machine then or now. BTW, did Whirlpool have the center timer dial before Maytag started designing theirs that way? |

I'm pretty certain that Maytag always had a center time. At least until about 1980. I always thought that I remembered this being an RCA Whirlpool. And it looks like rickr's machine is. But the POD is not. Ed |

Hi Ed I lived in Pittsburgh as a boy...long time ago...Baldwin-Whitehall area. I remember that once a year you could put ANYTHING out on the curb and they would come and pick it up. That is when people would put out their old appliances and lots of other cool junk. It would take about a week before they picked it all up giving me lots of time to browse. My mom would go nuts because I would drag home more stuff than our family was getting rid of. I would go for long walks checking out the piles of refuse. What fun! Maytag's first few models of washers did not have a center dial. The earliest models had the knobs on the top front of the cabinet, one on each corner... and then there was a model with two matching knobs on a backsplash side by side in the center. I think about 1956 or 57 they started with the center dial and push buttons. |

Rich I live in Bethel Park. Literally one block in front of my house is Whitehall and the other end of my street is Baldwin. I completely forgot about the earliest Maytags before backsplash control panels and I never saw one with the 2 matching knobs in the center. Ed |

Ed, I've tried to email you twice but they are returned undeliverable. I'm less than 30 minutes from you. There are quite a few of us in the tri-state (Ohio, WV & PA) area, in addition to the eastern part of the state and NY. With over 500 club members, it's hard to say how many more of us who collect vintage appliances are within a couple of hours' drive of each other. Jimmy (FilterFlo) is only 2 hours away and although we are close, we don't get to see each other as much as I'd like. It would be great for all of us to meet sometime for a local wash-in. Also, 'Dan' from State college - your email addy as listed under your profile is not correct either. A few of us will be coming up your way this summer to visit an old appliance guy who wants to get rid of his stash and it would be nice to meet you, too. Anyone else in this area want to get together? I'm going to be thinning out my collection this summer and would like the things to stay local if possible. Rich |
