ooo look at this beauty popping up in Derby, a Fisher and Paykel top loader!!, i'm not sure but by the looks of it its from the Gentle Annie series.
Anyone want to nab this?, would certainly be a good one to keep.

I am tempted a bit Seamus with that 9526, but ideally we both want a New Generation before moving onto the follow on series.

Speaking of New Generation - the top of the range 93730 reversomatic.

if it were closer - it would be snapped up, with or without a dodgy door.

Seamus dont worry, I have decided to go for the TL. Fancy a bit of fun so why not? Considering it is so local- we would be stupid not to. Not to mention we would be the only UK members here with one would make it that bit extra special. (cant help but feel so hmmm whats the word? Er smug lol :) that all the fantastic collections and majority of the best machines are my local area) Also we decided to try for the Hotpoint too. We have space for 16 machines on top of the 15 Vacs I already have so why not? Matt, thanks matey for alerting us to the TL! Hope to catch you soon on MSN! R

What is a "Gentle Annie" series F&P? Is that
Bendix "compact" as tiny as it looks?

The Fisher and Paykel is an ECS top loader. Later versions were sold as "Gentle Annie". These are a really high quality machine, in my opinion more robust than the later Smart Drive machines. My mother has one, I also have a couple for spares. If someone in the UK buys one, I am happy to send parts if needed, though they are VERY reliable machines. Mum's has just had a new tub-to-pump hose fitted.

Technologically - F&P used to assemble the Hotpoint UK top loader under license for the NZ market. They decided to develop their own machine, this was the result. It uses a belt drive from a three phase electronically controlled motor, to a pulley on the agitator shaft. The motor reverses very fast to give a good agitator action. The motor is made in the USA by General Electric.
The "simple but clever" part - The spin shaft has its own pulley just above the agitator pulley. There is no belt on the spin pulley. Each pulley has a finger on it, the two fingers will touch when the pulleys are in alignment. The spin shaft connects to nothing else, there is no brake so the tub is free to turn. To wash, the motor turns back and forth fast, never turning more than about 3/4 of a turn at the agitator. So the fingers never meet, or only touch lightly. To spin, the motor turns fast in one direction. The fingers touch and the spin pulley is driven round by the agitator pulley. It is amazingly simple, no transmission at all, just a shaft within a shaft. It is beautifully made, I have never seen one with leaky shafts or bearings.
The electronics is more bulky than in Smart Drives, there is a full board behind the control panel, and another sheelmetal box full of electronics in the base of the machine.

These machines cost AU$1000 new in about 1990, a new Smart Drive can be bought today from about AU$500.

So, somebody buy the thing.

Chris.

Thanks Chris----

And does the Gentle Annie have a different agitator than the Smart Drive machines? I'm not familiar with the older F&P's at all.

Inside a Gentle Annie

Here is the tub and agitator of the Gentle Annie. I know I had a picture filed away somewhere. Its not my machine I might add, I just collect pictures for reference purposes. :)

Thankyou!

From what I can see the agitator does not differ from what I am used to seeing.

think this is the third variant of this machine - the 1701/21 - which had heavy purple banding on the timer dial and the later style door which had a slight angle rather than flat finish.

The Gentle Annie agitator is different to the Smart Drive.

Gentle Annie: each fin is a triangle, fully connected to the base skirt at the bottom, the centre post at the centre. The outer edge of each fin is a straight line.

Smart Drive: each fin is a "wing" which is attached to the centre post but not fully attached to the base skirt. The outer edge of each fin is a curve.

The action is different too - the Smart Drive has a very slight pause after each stroke, the Gentle Annie has absolutely no pause, the agitator "bounces" instantly from full speed one way to full speed the other direction.

Chris.

close to my heart this one

my grandparents replaced this type of machine with their Hotpoint liberator dryer in 1973/74.

But they, for some reason, didn't scrap it!

I came along in 1978 and it became mine through to about 1983/84.

At that point my grandma had her kitchen and utility rearranged and I was ASKED whether the machine could be disposed of.

I said yes.

If the machine wasnt so very far away, I would definately seek to right that wrong.

Question though - my grandma always called it ACME Summer Breeze, as opposed to Sun Breeze!
I am perplexed as Summer Breeze sounds more likely than a Sun Breeze and yet it definately looks to be the latter.
Was there ever a Summer Breeze?

same old story.....

just too far away! again I have looked.

Another great looking Bendix 7124 circa 1985/86.

Just waiting, like the proverbial bus, for the third one to come along.
Two chrome round door Bendix in the space of two/three weeks, where previously there had been none.

Weird.

Fab Zanussi! So 70s! I love it!!

Hi Darren

WOW and WOW!

Can't wait to see your Zanussi! I so absolutely love the 1970s and any machine from that time to me is fabulous!

Its a shame you are having to part with some of your others but I totally understand. Us as collectors if we don't have the room just have to move machines on to get new fantastic machines! We never get bored that way and at least we don't have too many so the ones we have can be used regulary to keep em going.

This one has sold, but i include it because of the sheer fantastic condition and the fact that it is a DIAMOND version.

Look at that asking price - the price sold is incredible too.

Whoever bought has a fantastic looking machine - indeed when i first saw it (and before I saw the price) I ws very tempted at the prospect of ownership.

Right - getting really hacked off with this everything superb is down south thing.

My grandma owned one of these from about 1982 through 1988, before it went mad with PCB issues.

When i saw it last night I was instantly ready to buy - then i saw the location.

Why, oh why, oh why, oh why is everything always soooo far away.

p.s does anyone know much about this series as the 320 was the only one i ever saw. I know there was Mk318 (850rpm) and Mk320, Mk321 and Mk322 all 1000rpm.
I asume they all looked identical but with more or less buttons?
