OK, OK. I see a pic of a 12 series Tag on Craigslist. Kind of fuzzy, but it looks like an almond 712. I call the guy, and he says it belonged to an old lady who only washed once a month, blah, blah, blah. I go up to the boonies of northern Massachusetts to a place right out of Deliverance. The guy turned out to be very nice, and even restored old player pianos. Behind one of the pianos was this A712, in MINT condition! He tried to move it out behind the piano and I yelled at him to stop. I didn't want one single scratch on it. I really think the old lady must have kept it in shrink wrap.

Great catch B in B!

What is with that oval opening in the base of the machine shown behind the pump's inlet hose?

Seems to be an overflow outlet, but I have never seen one before in a Maytag......

Post# 277419 , Reply# 16   4/29/2008 at 07:03 (5,832 days old) by gyrafoam (Wytheville, VA)

I bought one of these brand new in 1991. I was not "tuned in" to the changes at Maytag at the time and was shocked when I realized the tranny was now an "orbital" type and I did not care for the short, fast stroke of the agitator.
At first I was going to return it, but finally got used to it and kept it untill I moved to Mobile, AL. for a short time in 2000.(I had also purchased a new 1997 FrigEMore and was not using it often) I then sold it (it still looked like brand new) to a friend there who still uses it and cherishes it.
17 years old now, and yet to have a single repair.

My only complaint was that damned 90 second rinse. If you had a full load and were using "Extra Large" water level the load would not even have a chance to roll-over one time before the "rinse" was over!
I tended to use the "Large" water level a lot just to assure everything got at least one roll-over.

You have found a great machine and I'm sure you will really enjoy it!
Congratulations!

Excellent catch Bobby...............looks showroom new.

Steve...that opening in the baseplate was to facilitate threading the drive belt onto the center pulley without having to tilt the machine. It was much more helpful with the stack unit, as it was difficult, at best, to slide the washer off of the dryer stand to get to the belts. You would reach your hand in there and thread the belt more easily.

That washer is a great find. I have an A613 that is very similar...except that instead of 4 speed selections there are 2..regular/fast and gentle/slow. I would have to say that this was the last series with the regular 5 gear transmission with the nice long stroke. I think the last I have seen of these was in 1989. Then they introduced the Orbital Dependable Drive in 90....I could be wrong on the years. Very good machine and it is a workhorse. Washes very well and doesnt wear out the clothes.

Thanks, All.
She really is a beauty. I have to polish her tonight. Last night I changed the inlet screens, as the hot was full of sediment. The original fill hoses came with it, but the drain hose was missing. I have a spare from another 12 series that had been tossed out at the Salvation Army. This series eliminated the tinnerman clips on the top cover. The screws thread into the top frame directly. Also there is no rubber stop ring for the agitator. They added a set screw to keep the agitator from lifting off. It wobbled a little, and the looseness would drive me crazy, so I put on an OEM stop ring that I had. Now the agitator is snug as a bug, the way the older ones were. The belts are a little frayed, surprizingly, so I need to replace them. I love the access to the pulley from under the tub. Great idea and improvement. I assume this model is from 1985. I'll post pics of our maiden wash this weekend.

The last long stroke tranny to come off the assembly line was June of 1986.

Since you have the newer gold colored band that runs around the edge of the console (vs. the older silver colored band), I'd say 1985-86 sounds about right for your machine.

Gary---

My machine definately had the turquoise agitator, just the shorter fins of the orbital. (Funny how Bobby mentions the wobbly agitator----mine was just like that too.) On closer examination of Bobby's machine---mine did not offer so many water temperature combinations. Mine was all cold rinses.

I ran across the bill of sale while packing for the move last fall! I kept it although I don't remember which box of stuff I put it in.

'My machine definately had the turquoise agitator, just the shorter fins of the orbital'

So before the change to the white agitator, is it my understanding that Maytag changed to the orbital transmission but still kept the blue powerfin agitator?

When do you believe that Maytag changed from helical drive to orbital?

Post# 277620 , Reply# 45   4/30/2008 at 07:04 (5,831 days old) by gyrafoam (Wytheville, VA)
Gary---

Well I can tell you I was stunned when I realized my new machine was orbital!I did NOT like it at first and was angry about it! I think it had to be right about the time I bought it. Gansky will know for sure, but I am thinking the switch to orbital occured around 1990/1991. He and I spoke last night and he was telling me that certain promotional models had the standard white powerfin installed way back into the 1980's but I never saw one---how kool.

The first white power-fin I recall was around 1995-1996 and it had the little extra fins towards the top of the barrel. This was around a few years before the change to the ratcheting agitator.

The change to the orbital was in 1987'ish. The agitators remained blue/turquoise for a while and then changed to white as in the brochure above in the last of the 25 1/2" wide washers. The agitators were a bit different in the later, wider machines (top brochure pics) and had 12 fins - Power-Flex 12. The first orbital machine I saw was almost exactly like Bobby's but without the speed selections and had a turquoise agitator. A lady I worked with had one in her new house and it did a spectacular job on small loads but I didn't get to try a large load until a few years later in someone else's washer.

I never thought the orbital did all that much in the deep, narrow basket of the 25 1/2" washers - very prone to overloading and then nothing moved at all. Rollover was pretty slow, but clothes spent more time at the bottom of the bakset where the flexible fins at the base could slap them around a little better and we all know that fast rollover doesn't necessarily mean good cleaning - what happens when they get to the bottom of the tub is where the cleaning takes place. Those first orbital tranny washers were really abysmal when trying to wash large or bulky items. If loaded very full, the item would get wet, but wouldn't move at all. Even in the later Dependable Care models, the ability to wash large items was marginal without the Load Sensor (corkscrew/dual-action) agitator. I never could get some larger throw rugs or multiple small bulky items to move around without dunking my arm in the water and pushing them around. The same can be said for the Whirlpool-made Direct-Drive machines too - that deep, narrow basket doesn't move big things well. The KitchenAids with the three speed motor and larger agitator base were a big improvement for these loads.

I put a 50 cycle pulley and belt set (and a motor start capacitor) on my A806 washer and by increasing the agitation and spin speed, turned it into an amazing washer. This ain't your grandmother's Maytag - it even sounds very different. If I had another of the Dep. Care or any orbital tranny washer now, I'd put an original Power-Fin like Bobby's in it - talk about washday drama:

Orbital Tranny:

We have one of those too. It looks just like the Powerflex 12 featured in Post #277628, except the dispenser is not as tall. Our washer was one of the last models that had a lid the size of the A712 above.

The sound is very different. It is the short fast stroke (approx. 160 opms per minute), and with the protruding fins up the agitator shaft, you can hear the rhythmic sloshing of the water on a full load. The first time I heard one of these run, I thought Maytag had adopted the Frigidaire method of vertical agitation; the rhythm, with the splashing bear a similar sound. Once I actually watched it, I knew this was not the case. It generates a fair amount of turnover, and does a nice job cleaning.

Bobby:
Congrats on getting that gorgeous A712! Back in 1985, that model was my dream machine. I remember seeing those on a showroom floor, and as I remember, it actually shined brighter than other models. I kid you not about this. These were in the stores for several years, and in my book, anyone who bought them was the luckiest person in the world.

Have a good one,
James

The A712(and other similar models went to the orbital trasmission at series 10. The series number was on the metal tag with the model and serial number.
I.E.
Model----Series----Serial
-A712 ---- 10 --- 123456AB

Anything below a 10 was the Helical. 10 and above was the orbital.

Gary:

If I've gotten this correct, the brochure shows the newer orbital tranny. (Looks like a horizontal letter "O" in shape).

Therefore the tranny shown in Bobby's picture is the older helical drive.

It seems that for he most part the turquoise agitatior followed the helicals and the white ones the orbitals. In my way of thinking there was no reason to change to the shorter-stroked tranny EXCEPT to facilitate the corkscrew agitator (And/or lower production costs) Of course, the lower end models did not always have one. (As you know from the one you bought and sold).

:-)

Clear as mud?
Did I get this right, guys/girls/undecided?

It's without a doubt the old helical tranny. I fired her up after the gym last night at the kitchen sink. (She is in the middle of the kitchen at this writing.) Purrs like a kitten. Tub bearing is a little dry, like most older Tags. Polish on Friday, install on Saturday. Lots of dirty clothes to be washed Saturday night. I'll post some pics.

The first of the orbital tranny washers did have the blue/turquoise agitator and it was probably offered as a replacement with the orbital kit for older machines. These were probably changed to white as well when they began using white in all the new production machines.

seems like the new tranny was a big cost savings for Maytag. the orbital style looks like it weighs less than half what the previous did. looks like a lot less metal used.

Add-on start capacitor for Maytag A712

I was recently given a Maytag A712 washer that was not running. The motor hums, but won't start. I decided to try the 'add-on' start capacitor to see if that was what was wrong with it and got one at the electrical supply in town. Now I have the part and can make the wire connectors, but can't find any info on how to wire it in. Do any of you guys know how the wires should be attached? Your help would surely be appreciated! Thank you, Susan

I'm confused...

...but that's nothing new. I bought my Maytag new and had it shipped here boxed in the van with my stuff in 2001. It does not have an orbital transmission. The transmission looks almost identical to the machines I worked on years ago. The motor of course is different and the blue "porcelain" outer tub is really plastic. The agitator stroke is long. I took this photo a couple of months ago when I changed the noisy pump...the only service it's needed to date.
