Well, the A712 went in yesterday without a hitch. The kitchen looked more like a Maytag test site:

I took the lid off when I was cleaning and polishing it. There is an "S" stamped on the back of the lid. I have never seen this on the older models.

The pulley and underside needed a little attention. Lint galore!

The next few shots are of the spin. This machine has a little faster acceleration than my others. The water splashes over the top. The tub is empty and up to full rpm's in less than 60 seconds.

Rinse. Very clear rinse water, cold.

Here is a shot of the lint filter removed with rinse water pouring into the barrel of the agitator. A foolproof lint collector, no pump or hoses to go bad.

One problem with this model is that the tub was always a little off center after each spin. There is supposed to be 1/4" overhang on the back. This was to the side as shown:

Loosening this spring support bolt and tightening the opposite got the proper balance.

Enjoy your new 'Tag'. I have the same version in white.

What type detergent did you use, and, did you rinse the clothes twice to get rid of the detergent?

Steve and I defeated the lid switch on the Mutt this weekend. Was very easy to do.

VERY Sweet! Gotta love that lint filter for actually WORKING like it does! Beautiful machine, and it makes a fine match for the dryer. Congrats!

A foolproof lint collector, no pump or hoses to go bad.

No cumbersome trays or parts to get in the way!

Cool pics.

Glad you got that Tag up and running. It looks great. That shot of it paired next to the dryer is a winner. Also, I love that shot of the agi with the filter removed, and water swirling through it. Truly a unique feature that most other washers do not have.

You mentioned the overhang of the tub. I've seen many Maytags with overhangs from the back, and just as many that had them from the side. I always assumed it had to do with how level the washer was. Otherwise I find it interesting that the angle of overhang varies from one washer to the other.

Have a good one,
James

Post# 278583 , Reply# 26   5/6/2008 at 06:42 (5,832 days old) by bobbyderegis (Boston)

James,
I bet the overhang had to do with how good the guys in the factory were feeling the night before! Actually, there was probably variation among the individual springs from machine to machine.
Gary:
If your Tag goes unbalanced and you are not there to stop it right away you are f----. The lid switch will prevent a severely unbalanced load from damaging the machine. Bad, bad, bad.

What is your secret to lifting the lid and watching the action?

Risk vs. reward. It's a risk we are willing to take.

I have never EVER seen a Maytag go into unbalance. (Especially if the user knows what they are doing).

DUCKS AND RUNS!

Maybe my machine goes off balance because I'm off balance. Like washer, like owner. :-)
We need to have a wash-in soon.

I remember...

jons1077's profile picture
when I was quite young and these same model Maytags were being sold. I always liked walking around and looking at all the washers. This was also back when people actually had jobs working in the appliance dept. This gentleman demonstrated for me how a Maytag would never go unbalanced. He took a couple of phonebooks and put them on one side of the tub and started it up. Sure enough it was up to speed in less than a minute and not a sound. I was always impressed by that.

I've always found Maytags to go off balance fairly often, more often than a Filter-Flo or Speed Queen. The nice thing is how they shut off before any clunks of thunks. And no annoying buzzer.

Well...

I've never had an unbalanced wash in my 608 yet. I've always tried load it properly, and use the proper fill setting.
My mom was/is famous for underloading her Maytag and using too much water, resulting in the clothes piling up when the spin starts.
