In between my house and a local bar/reseraunt (1 mile away) is a dirt trail. Me and my brother always used to ride our bikes over there and get burgers when we were little. Anyways, I remember there being a mini "dump" of old appliances, and since I joined this site I just knew I had to go back there and make sure there wasn't anything worth saving. Although in the back of my mind when I was heading over there I was thinking Unimatic, unimatic, unimatic... (let's not get greedy now!)however, I did find an old Maytag wringer!! It is in GREAT (relatively) shape. Everything, save the wringer LOL, is still intact! Even the belt and the power chord still remain. Although it is far from running it's still really cool. My goal is to have it running by the end of the summer, however I don't even really know where to start... I put WD-40 on every single nut and bolt I could find so I guess that's where I'm starting.

I know with a lot of old automatic Maytags, people with a vast expanse of Maytag knowledge can identify them, so here are the details:
Model: A4000
Serial: K-I-40
RPM: 1725 (now that'd be one hell of a final spin!)

So without further ado!

Question

The little square nut deal on top of the agitator post... is that the only part that rotates during agitation??

It's gonna need a peg leg

One of the wheels is missing.

LEAK

As you can kind of see in the picture there is a slow leak. I assume I could fix it with some sort of caulk or something?

That's quite a find, Jed. I can't believe it still works---amazing! Personally, I would have been scared to plug it in, LOL.

It doesn't work.... YET. Right now the only thing powering this beast is elbow grease.

You just brought a whole new meaning to elbow grease, wow.

Nice save there Jed - need a break before you begin the rinse? ;-)

LOL Jed that is way too funny. Love the vice-grips. Congrats on the find.

If you decide to try that machine out for real be sure to install a brand new three prong grounded cord first. Let me know if you need instructions on how to safely ground the washer.

Other than electrical safety-

I would bet that motor will start right up when you do get a new, safe cord and plug on it.

Great catch, Jed!

It looks like you're having fun - be safe! Have you tried turning the belt to see if the mechanism will turn? You could probably fix the leaks in the aluminum tub with JB Weld.

DUH

It's not steel, it's aluminum!! Gansky, great idea. I just took the belt cover off and manually turned the pulley. With the transmission selector in "on" it agitates! Now all I need is to see if the motor works and I might have this baby up and running in no time.
