Well, I finally got everything up to at least working order with my maytag tonight, so I decided to take a couple pictures of the wash, and make a cool little video! The video is just using my small digital camera, but I think it turned out pretty good. 1st the pictures and then the video when it finishes uploading to YouTube.

More Gyrator action. I'm simply in awe with it. I love the swishing sounds... and the way they change just by adding soap. I can't believe I got it this far...

Nothing says wash like Tide for me. It's what we used growing up and I will always love the smell.

And now the video!

I think this machine is a lot of fun to watch! Near the beginning of the video I tried to show you how my knee was holding the transmisson lever down, it's not perfect yet and will kick into neatrul sometimes. There is a kind of ticking noise from I think the belt, I'll probably have to get a new one. Hope everyone enjoys the video!

Arcing start switch

You've got a nasty arc in your start switch, or something.

arc = heat = melted parts in motor. phsssstt!

From the video I suspect you've noticed this.

Most motors I have seen produce a spark as the start switch kicks out.

Greg video Jed, congratulations on a wonderful first restoration, something tells me this is going to be the first of hundreds :) YAY!

Transmission lever

Jed from your other post with the pictures of the lever it is bent down. The lever should be straight up to the side of the tub. On the leg you will see the two notches for the lever to ride in one side will hold the lever in netural and the other in the run position.

Arc in start switch

After viewing the video, can others on here confirm Bill's diagnosis of the clicking noise to be an "arc in the start switch"? How do I see for myself? Is there a quick way to fix it?

Hey Jed -

Some good work here! I'm not sure about the sound - do you smell anything burning electrically?

If you need to (and have room) - you can bring it down to Coon Rapids for a look over.

Ben

I didn't notice any electrical burning smells. In fact I had it washing for about 20 minutes straight, and afterwards I felt the engine and tranny, and everything felt very cool.

I would attribute it then to maybe belt noise or a loose mount. With the bungees that could cause the sound - possibly.

To be 100 percent certain though - take the motor off the washer, hold the motor to the ground and plug it in. If the sound stops - then you can attribute it to the machine as a natural noise from a 70 y/o washer.

Cool video, Jed! But please be careful not to electrocute yourself.

Hi Eug!!! Non-electrocution is highly over-rated ! I've survived it several times.

Hi Mickeyd---I hate even small electrical shocks, so non-electrocution suits me just fine!

The truth sets everyone free, Eugene

mickeyd's profile picture
I went to cocktail hour last night--very rare for me to do so on a weekday, rarer, as Greg would say than finding a box of Dash or hens' teeth;' So last evening's posts are pretty whimsical.

Now for the truth: my grandmother, Margaret Crotty, whom I worshipped, was afraid of electricity and lightening. I pretend that I am not afraid of electricity, but I think some transference has occurred, even of it's subconscious. My Greyghost which I offered to Tuthill, or anyone who wants it, scares me because ONE, the drain port is directly above the motor; and TWO, I swear I feel a mild current whenever I touch it but I am tactilely hyper-sensitive, so a normal person might feel nothing; and although it is very exciting, I want no part of it. Would you like my Greyghost, Eugene?

Or would anyone else? Whoever--I'll put your name on it and keep it indefinitely. It sits in the far corner of a large garage, silently waiting to excite.

GREY "GHOST"

Hey all, my wringer is now free of the obnoxious clicking sound some noticed in my 1st video. All it took was a readjustment and tightening of the drive pulley. I still have to actually mount it to the frame to get rid of even more of the noise. Tonight's load is Large (not Bob, but close for this old girl) consisting of shirts socks and boxers. Check out the turnover! Enjoy.

Wonderful videos, especially the last one. After 71 years she still does a good job! But oh horror! You are using a liquid detergent in her? She deserves a powder!

Good luck with a wonderful classic.
