I was bored this morning so I did some trolling on the Kijiji classfieds for the Montreal region and found this '66 Maytag top-loader. I am fascinated by it - I remember a neighbor had a TL 'Tag but I don't recall it having the wash arm on the lid! I also recall the top rack was 'split' and part of it raised as you opened the lid to permit lower rack loading. I am trying to get in touch with the seller - if the price is reasonable, I think I should grab it! It will be worth hubby yelling at me about 'Finish with that 1956 kitchen already' for a week... Yes, it is Maytag's first dishwasher, from 1968 or so. Was check-rated by Consumer Reports. This one looks like it's in good condition. Should clean anything off anything! Lawrence/Maytagbear | ||

First Maytag dishwasher. They came into the game late, but made a very good cleaning machine - exceptional in a lot of ways...except racking. This model was a pain to use if you normally allowed a full load to accumulate over a span of a few days or so. You had to open the top rack to access the lower rack for glasses, etc. and that got to be a real pain reaching in and around the upper rack. The easiest solution to that was to allow the dirty dishes to accumulate on the counter, in the sink or on the coffee table and load it all at once then turn it on. Even then, you had to be a bit more organized about loading sequences - glasses and smaller items first into the depths of the machine, then the larger items and plates & flatware on top. When they came out with the front-loading version a short while later, it was brilliant and the capacity was "unsurpassed" for it's time. Here is one that Jimmy and Don S. are working on in 2003 - we brought it back from the Iowa store we visited during that trip and Jimmy got it working right away. It had been used in an area with lots of iron in the water but Super Iron Out removed nearly all of it pretty fast. The tank was nearly all orange when Jimmy first started cleaning - and look at it after only a short time. Fun dishwasher and since it was a "direct-drive" pump, much quieter than the later belt-driven Maytags.

Only ever seen two of these - the one in Newton at the Jasper County Museum, and also about 4 years ago one behind the local appliance store. Was in very rough shape, otherwise it'd be in Cory's basement or mine. Dishes accumulate on the counter top - isn't that counter-productive for the reasoning behind owning a dishwasher? ;-) Nate - yer moving to KC!! Very sweet. Ben | ||

No contact from the seller yet... Then again, it is vacation season so they may be out of town. I just hope it's still available! I hope there are no AWO members who live in or around Trois-Rivières who snagged this before I could!! Oh and was hubby not impressed with this scheme of mine... He is now threatening to not help me film the GE dishwasher (which with any luck will be this weekend!)... | ||

I've been looking for one of these for years. I'll never forget the first time I saw one in person at Gimbels on 33rd Street in NYC. I couldn't believe how cavernous it looked inside. Thank you for posting the picture of the interior; I had forgotten how the racks worked and how one got access to the lower racks. It looks like half of the plates rack is removable and you slide the other half to one side to get to the bottom rack. I'm surprised CU check-rated this model given that obvious flaw. It would have been a huge pain to remove plates to remove the rack to get to the bottom. I always thought that making the top rack hold the plates was a typically brilliant move on the part of Maytag (for cleaning efficacy), but I must admit, after using this design now for several years. I find it a little tedious. I realize that I tend to load plates in batches but I'm always loading cups and glasses one at a time. It again makes me realize how well designed the GE pull outs were; all you had to remove was the silverware basket and the bottom racks were completely accessible. | ||

Spoke with the person selling this and I have made arrangements to see (and pick up, who am I kidding!) this on the weekend of August 16th. I learned that this was left in a summer cabin that was recently purchased but the new owners do not want to keep this appliance (fools...). Now, here's a dilemma: the owner has not set a fixed price - she said 'make an offer when you've seen it'. I hate that because I don't want to offer an insultingly low or excessive price. What's a fair price for a working, well-kept machine like this? I think the current owner may have some idea of the value because she said she contacted Maytag to find out something about it and she seems to know it's one of the first... | ||

Oh, and any suggestions on how to placate hubby?
'Cause he was PISSED at the thought of getting another dishwasher... I guess it would have gone better if our garage were already built and my planned workshop was already available... I am thinking I am going to need to be cooking my ass off this weekend - a bottle of really good gin (Bombay Sapphire is his fave) may help, too. | ||

Salut Serge!
Was that the one sitting at Les Appareils Ulysse?? I saw that one every day for about a month when I took the 45 up to a customer's site near the plateau!! When I do get it, I may be transporting it directly down to the house in Ogden, but if you don't mind the drive to les Cantons de l'Est, you would be welcome to visit! Check back on the board around August 17th or 18th - I should have it by then! A +! | ||
