Remember the Wards Signature by Norge that Kenny Goatfarmer had listed here in July? At any rate, there were no takers for the poor thing and I felt sorry for it. I had seen it sitting in the junkyard in 06, and passed on it then, but thought since nobody else wanted it, that I would take it. So met Kenny early one Saturday morning in July and took the poor sucker home.

After I brought it home, the guys putting in the new sidewalks for me laughed at it. It was so rusty, dented, and full of mud, that it left a trail down the driveway.

I took the powerscrubber to it, inside and out... And tore it down.

She needed a new pump, belt, water walve, lights, switches, hoses, ect. and the leveling legs were so rusted that two of them snapped off, even when heated with a torch.
The rest of the stuff was easy, but I could NOT find a pump.
Ended up fitting a Speed Queen pump to the machine instead. It was kind of the same, anyway....

Pump from the repainted bottom of the machine...

Note that I replaced the small Speed Queen pulley. It would have made the pump run waaaay too fast, and the belt may have been too large.

Speed Queen pump from the inside of the machine. I drilled four holes to mount this pump in the machine in place of the original NLA Norge pump.

another..

The inside of the outer tub was fine, but the outside had many deep pitted marks into the metal. I wire brushed the outside of the tub and sprayed rust proof paint on the outer tub. Strange that this was rusted this way. My guess would be that this machine sat in the junkyard for 20 years, so that is what happens when "tin worms" get hungry...

Deante came home, but he was getting cleaned up and ready to go out again. He did help move the Monkey Wards down the basement and even helped me hook it up. But kept the toothbrush in his mouth the entire time, just to let me know he was in a rush... <:

And she spun it all out without a suds lock too!

This machine was built in 1969. It features a neutral drain first, then goes into spin drain for the rest of the drain.

More pics to come later tonight...

Rick, HOT DAYAM!!!! I got sooo excited and shocked that this ugly duckling works just fine. Let's put it this way, I'm lookin' for a cigarette to smoke!! The billowing suds bring back memories of our 12/22/64 Norge. And your right, it never did a suds lock. Sadly, the billowing suds pictures reminded me of after my mom's mom died and my mom brought a whole bunch of table, bath, and bed linens home that had been stored for years and I had to get them white and clean. I had tons of suds from dumping in a bunch of detergent and bleach. Rick, when you can, I'd love an explanation of how the control panel functions and also good closeup pics of the cycle description chart and other descriptions from the underside of the lid. I never ever saw a machine like this ever. Fascinates me. Incidentally, this panel closely resembles our 1964 Norge. It had the HUGE dial/display in the middle of the panel, the big fat knob used to move the timer around. But, the sliding water level lever was on the far right side below the big control knob. The washer & dryer we had, as it turns out, was the very last washer & dryer shown on the Ozzie & Harriet show in 1964 and 1965 before they ceased production. I wish someone would capture shots of the laundry pair sometimes if they can. And tell Deante he looks very cute with that skeptical, impatient look in the picture.

My gosh Rick - this looks great! Did you put a black-light bulb in the panel, what a cool idea. Awesome job on the resto, and retrofitting a Speed Queen pump into place. That's the way to get it done!!!

Beautiful restoration Rick!
That's the same model that my great Aunt had. I use to sneak down her basement when she had it running to watch it wash. I would always come up with some lame excuse as to why I was down there for soooo long. I'm sure that she never suspected that I was fascinated with her washer. She probably just thought I needed to masturbate or something.

Not that Ugly!

Howdy Rick, even though it's a Monkey Wards machine its not that ugly.....all cleaned up it's a pretty snazzy machine. BTW, how's the restoration coming along on the Roller-Matic? haven't heard nor seen anything on that for quite a while...

Thanks guys!!

Yeah, this really is not an ugly machine, but it sure was when Kenny pulled it out of the junkyard! Therefore he called it the Ugly Wards, and I called it the Monkey Norge. THey are both fun names, and either is fine with me.

BTW: The Rollermatic set should be done yet this Fall. The washer needs some cabinet rust restoration, and my painter friend has been very busy this year with a 1966 Oldsmbile 88 Convertible restoration. Washers are on the back burner for him right now, so I painted this Norge by myself. It is not perfect like I am used to, but it will do, and it is a hell of a lot better than it was! lol!! There were two places where the cabinet had rusted though, and if you look close it noticeable. Also the right side was bashed in very bad. I straightened it as best as possible, but the metal was dented so far, that it can be seen if one looks for it. But I am satisfied with the restoration. And a rare machine has been saved.

Now for the rest of the pixs... Rinse action

There is no know for advancing the timer. One just presses the touch button, and the timer advances via a small motor. The sound is very cool as the timer advances. <:

Cold wash and rinse are set via the toggle switch. Warm and hot washes are set via the touch switch. All rinses are warm, unless the cold wash option is used via the cold wash switch.

Right side of machine. Dents and all.... Should have seen it before guys!!

I had a glass replacement lens made for the light, as the original plactic was cracked and yellowed to almost a powder. I then replaced a new lamp, but before installing it I put theatrical gel tube over the lamp. I picked a dark royal blue, and the flash does not do it justice. This machine looks VERY cool with the colour, and it lights the control panel, suds and clothes, filter, tub ring and agitator plus the wall across from the machine, in a ghostly blue hue. Very cool from a junkyard dawg like this one. lol!! This machine is installed on the other side of the furnace, away from the other machines, as I am out of room. It is in a dark area of the basement, and the blue light is very dramatic. Very cool! I love it!

Rick, you transformed an ugly duckling into a swan. Did you have to do any work on the motor? it looked as if it had some water rust stains around the openings to the windings. The bearings are ok, huh?

Thanks guys!!

Hi Les, I tore the motor down and cleaned it, plus lubed the bearings. It runs fine now, but the motor would not turn by hand when I first removed it. The bearings are of the bronze bushing type, not the ball bearing type. So they did not rust.

Rick, thats a great job, i always admire your restorations. I may have missed the info what year is your Touch & Wash from, was wondering if it was in the "Big Book" M.Wards catalog, or if this model was sold only in retail stores. I was a catalogue junkie in my youth, I sure do not recall the Touch-N-Wash. yeah buddy that ones a keeper, i don't recall seeing that machine. I wonder if the dryer had the same touch-N-dry feature? great work, Thanks for sharing. It POP's NOW, i bet the first owner showed it to every lady on the street. arthur

Wonderful job sometimes it's really rewarding to take a ghost machine and revive it all the way back to show!!!

That is my favorite Norge with the Vorpulator it really slams things around in that tub! We had a laundromat full of these in avocado in the 60's at our summer home. But the lids would lock on spin, I worked my way around that pretty quick!

The laundromat machines had black Vorpulators in them not white!

Rick great choice on the Blue light! I tried that with my Sub Zero but the film was not dark enough it had no effect at all on the color.

Enjoy!

Hey Jon, let me know what colour gel tube you want, and size, and I will send it to you.

Hi Arthur, This machine was manufactured in 1969. I think this one must have been the TOL model. Don't know if the matching dryer had the touch button, but guess that would/could have been a start switch for the dryer. And please, everybody, do NOT find me a matching dryer....lol!!

Hi Pete, the dial for all three cycles lights up anytime the light is on. The camera flash washes part of the light out on the dial, so the blue light is not visible on the entire dial in the photos.

Walsh University, home of the Hoover Museum would have drafted you on the spot. Walsh is the sole university in America offering a major in Antique Restoration. Surely, you would be offered instant professor emeritus status.

I'm going' crazy lookin' at you stuff here. You know every brand lifted itself up to prominence perfecting al least one aspect of engineering, and I think the Norge Company reached the apogee in agitation with that fabulous baby you have here. No other agitator creates such turbulent currents.

Not sure, but seems as if you touch the cycle "buzzers" on the left, then hit Touch N' Wash, yes? Love to know the operation and not quite sure. Humbly. Can usually operate blind-folded. Not on your Kissed Frog Now Prince.

I'm totally into portable lighted controls. Where can I buy the light the you have?

This white thing is nothing after your blue with envy;'D

Post# 304179 , Reply# 52   9/16/2008 at 21:56 (5,671 days old) by rickr (.)
Step two..

rickr's profile picture
Press the Touch N' Wash button in and hold it until the desired cycle is reached. I always use "Cottons and Linens"
Press the T&W button again and advance the timer needle to the desired water temp. (Hot Wash or Warm Wash) The water temp will be hot or warm wash, and a warm rinse.
If a cold wash, and or cold rinse is wanted, there is a toggle switch between the water level lever, and the timer control panel. The only way to move the timer forward is to use the T&W button.
The timer advances only in a clockwise direction.

Rickr I have a vorpulator that I

will cheerfully send along...as soon as I figure out
what size and style of socket to use for extraction. I don't have the filter though , good thing you have one. It's from a
early mid 80's almond color machine. Vorpulation....the only
way to go!

Arthur... you must have been snoozing at the catalog junky
flop house! I went to work at the local MW catalog store
in the late winter/early spring of '69 and we were offering the touch and wash; maybe it came out late in the spring of that year. I remember thinking Wards was so much more clever than Sears!

WOW Darrel!! That would be so cool to have!! Vorpulator with duel lint filters...lol!!

At any rate, the Vorpulator on my machine comes off just by simply removing the plastic screw (star looking thing in the middle of the top) and then the Vorpulator simply pulls right up, off the splined shaft. The nut does not need to come off at all. I would think that these would be the same. Let me know if you have trouble getting the Vorpulator off, and let me pay you for your trouble and the shipping please. <:

That is wild that you worked at Montgomery Wards when these machines were new! I was thinking this machine would be the TOL, with the lighted panel and the rapid advance timer and all. Do you remember if that is correct?
When I overhauled the timer, I noticed the rapid advance motor was stamped JUNE 69, so you are correct when you say this model is from 1969.

When you watch that thing in action especially at the extra low water levels available on some machines, what you see is so over the top, that only a word like "Vorpulator" is sufficiently apt. New to me and delighted to learn it.

Speaking of all of which in this exciting thread: We, or at least I, forget how influential Norge was. We are so often so busy with Whirlpool's Clones, we forget all the Norge-ites in the catalogs, in the Ward's stores, in the Western Auto stores. Where else?

Though one loves Norge's to death, one must admit to saying same about most brand. Ever meet a Vintage washer you didn't like something about?!

And, OF COURSE, Jet would know the real name of the Norge Giver-of-the-Wash.
Who's surprised? ;'D

Years ago, I had a Norge built dryer, that was branded Ace Hardware.

YAY! Another interesting machine restored.

Just have to add my 5 cents worth and tell you that this is a really lovely looking machine, and I am so glad you restored it! I love the rapid advance timer.

Any video's would be great too.

Hi Norgers

Ken, I never knew Ace sold large appliances, although we may have had only the smaller Ace's here. Thanks, so the Norge egg was pretty fertile, huh?

Wonder if it hatched anywhere else!?
