Hi

I am seeking some advice regarding the removal the Agitator without damaging or breaking it in the process.

I have tried fixerman's 2005 solution included below but so far unsuccessfully. It may be that I have to modify my approach and construct a "tripod" with the base of it being in the tub.

Any suggestions will be helpful.

thx

Post# 67832-5/23/2005-18:01 ||| fixerman (Minneapolis) The agitamer doesn't work well on agitators with the splines on the bottom. I wouldn't use it at all if you want to save the agitator. I have built a tool to remove Maytag agitators that works well on later plastic agitators that have some flex to them. Basically support the inside of the agitator with a steel tube the exact size of the inside of the agitator then make a clamp out of 2x4's with cutouts in the middle to match the outside diameter of the agitator top. Use threaded rod and nuts and washers to tighten these two halves together. This will give you something to grab on to. Then used chains attached at 2 points on this clamp. Then used a tripod like device I built myself to place on top of the tub and attached the chain ends to it. If you wanted to try this convaluted method I could make a sketch for you. Or just try making the clamp with the chains attached to either end and use a long 2x4 placed under the chains to try to leverage the agitator out. Hope this maks sense. This worked well on the later flexible plastic agitators but may be dangerous on bakelite. Just another idea you might ponder. Good luck

Refer to post #18559 for pictures.

I've successfully removed 3 different stuck Maytag agitators this way. It's "ghetto" but it works: Stuff small towels into the lint well of the agitator packing them down towards the drive as far as possible. Wrap towels around the outside base of the agitator stuffing them between the fins getting them also as close to the drive post as possible. Bring as many gallons of water to a boil as possible and carefully soak the towels, inside and out with the boiling water very gradually over a 5 -10 minute period. Allow the heat to penetrate the plastic for about 5 more minutes. Begin to grab the agitator at the base at various points (as you would a steering wheel) and rock and shake the thing up towards you. You'll need some strength here and be careful the agitator doesn't just pop up and off into your chin. Lever it up and it will disengage from the post. If it doesn't work the first time(and all my 3 worked the first time) repeat the soaking with the boiling water. Be careful, obviously, not to burn your hands. An added benefit of the boiling water is it softens the plastic making it less likely to crack. Good luck!

By the way, I LOVE BC and if Pay-for-Lint and McSame get elected, I'm moving there.

Here's how I got the agitator off my A606.

I had a package of clothesline. I threaded it up and down inside the middle of the agitator like a spider web and tied it to a large slidehammer. I laid the machine on it's side, and yanked like heck on the slidehammer untill the agiator came off.

Now I take it off once a month or so to clean, it comes right off.

I've used the AgiTamer on Maytag agitators before with success, you just have to take your time, and be careful.
