The story: About four months ago, my a real estate agent friend told me he'd seen this in a house he had shown to some clients. He told me to call the listing agent and give them my name to call when the dishwasher was removed. It was working and passed the home inspection. I've not had good luck with getting anyone to take me seriously about old appliances in houses for sale so basically wrote it off. Last week, this dishwasher showed up on Craigslist so I called and picked it up today. I don't have much interest in a 27" impeller dishwasher other than for the "wow" factor so I called my friend Harriet in Minneapolis and she was thrilled to see it. We'll load it up Friday and drive it up but the install will be have to be done by her contractor. |

Loves it. I think you'll really like this...just a little descaling and the insides will gleam. That porcelain is minty and miles thick--and the spray doodle on the top will preheat the tank before that impeller begins delivering wash-action satisfaction to your plates and dainties. Hooray! And then it will twirl and dry your dishes--does it get any better? Just like my pank one, only minus the burned-out motor. Hooray! The Roll-R-Rack flips upside down if you need to put taller things in the bottom...and still works as a top rack even when inverted! Really clever design. The motor shaft extends (via a bakelite extender thingy) up through a tube in the bottom of the tank. When the impeller runs, it creates a cushion of air that keeps the water from going down the drain. When it stops, everything runs out the slots under the impeller. No irritating carbon-porcelain seals to deal with! Double hooray! If yours has a timer like mine, see if it doesn't have the terminals needed to run an electric pump off the timer, just in case you're not totally in love with gravity draining. Oh, but what am I saying, your kitchen is right above the basement--do what Robert does, and just run a hose down to a washer standpipe below! ;-) I can't wait to hear this thing roar to life! You'll pop that Superba KA out of the kitchen so fast its Hydro-Sweep will spin ;-). |

We had similar model only it was badged GE in 1979. Exact same tub, impeller and racks but no dispensers. Cleaned beautifully and held quite a lot for a dinosaur. Only problem was that when activated, made the entire house shake(not exagerating)and sound like it was about to lift off into space. Parents nixed it and it was replaced by a KDP-18. Wish I had been able to keep it around. When I think of all the beautiful vintage appliances that have ended up at the Salisbury-Sharon transfer station, makes me want to cry. |

When the impeller runs, it creates a cushion of air that keeps the water from going down the drain. When it stops, everything runs out the slots under the impeller. No irritating carbon-porcelain seals to deal with! Double hooray! Wow I didn't realize that. The only problem with that is if you add a forgotten dish all your detergent laden water does down the tubes (literally). I bet this machine uses a amperage sensor on the motor to determine the water level, so it probably just refills itself back up. Oh, but what am I saying, your kitchen is right above the basement--do what Robert does, and just run a hose down to a washer standpipe below! ;-) I'm totally in love with gravity drain machines, I didn't realize this machine had side panels which means if I want to put it in the spot in the kitchen where the KD-14 is it will fit perfectly and I wont have to build a cabinet for it and yes it will be gravity drained. ***whooosh*** ***gets excited about all the possibilities of a new highly rated Hotpoint in the Kitchen*** |

...What year this machine was produced? It's a little different to the Hottie DWs I've seen in old Ozzie and Harriet commercials. The commercials I've seen appear to be from the 1950-1953 time frame; the racks of the DWs are uncoated, and the "Wonder Dial" is different. Any info for those of us who don't know nuttin'? |

"I can't wait to hear this thing roar to life! You'll pop that Superba KA out of the kitchen so fast its Hydro-Sweep will spin ;-)." Nope, not me! It's getting ready for a long journey to Minneapolis tomorrow. It will be shivering in the back of my dad's truck but it will none the worse for the wear and happy to be in a loving new home. There's a 1953 Hotpoint dishwasher commercial, as a related link, available. It's also an O&H ciommercial. THAT'S the particular hotpoint model I was exposed to a lot when I was very little. Ad the guy talkin about the dishwasher ain't bad lookin neither!!! Cracks me up, show a lady from the crew bringing in a cart of dirty dishes. Shows her liftin out the top rack, but it doesn't show her strugglin' to put that loaded top rack back on top of the bottom rack lol.

Simply is one of the best designs. One reason commercial washing machines and dishwashers last ages, no pump to foul, jam or otherwise give out. Valve opens, water dumps, end of story. For front loading washing machines it solve the problem of suds locking or too much water being extracted at once, causing the machine to slow extraction or stop all together. Always amazing to watch a 50lb Speed Queen washer at the local launderette deal with a full load such as huge duvet. Damn thing simply goes into spin and what seems like Lake Erie comes gushing down the window of the door, and right down the drain. Job done, no muss, no fuss. Launderess |

I'll bet you had to scrape and rinse the dishes before loading. I only use 1950's dishwashers in my house (1957 KitchenAid, 1956 Frigidaire, 1950 Westinghouse). They all clean just fine, you don't (and shouldn't, its bad for the dishwasher) have to rinse the dishes before hand, but you do have to soak any pan or dish that has burned on food. You should never pre-rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, the dishwasher detergent is mildly caustic and needs to eat something. If there is no grease and food particles left on the dishes the detergent will eat away at the porcelain of the dishwasher must faster over time. |

You know, that's a really good point about adding a forgotten dish--wow, I never tried it and never realized that, but you're right! Eep! That'll be so much fun! As for rinsing the dishes and getting a new dishwasher, I think it's only true if you have a porcelain machine, Jamie...and if my Frigicrap was any example, on modern machines, you're probably better off prerinsing it anyway! := |

There is a door switch on this machine and it does work - when we tried it last weekend. **Rumor is that the Hotpoint is working pretty well now, Harriet has been using her restoration talents to make it like new again and soon will be washing dishes for the kids every day. I wouldn't be surprised to see that door-switch disabled and a smart lucite contraption added to view the torrents of swirling water inside! Time will tell... |
