Hi all! I have an old Maytag that works great except for the horrible brake noise at the end of the spin cycle. Is this a job I can tackle myself? I am an auto mechanic so I'm no slouch when it comes to fixing things, it's just I keep reading about a horrible spring loaded mechanism. I can't seem to find any specifics beyond that. Is there anyone out there that can waltz me through the process? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Todd

My dad told me to take an squirt type oil can, and put a bit of oil up into the brake package. Over the top of the pulley.

Otherwise, I think you have to change the brake. Not a bad job, much easier with the proper tool.

Goatfarmer is correct. I have a little squirt bottle filled with Maytag tranny oil. You may have to remove the drive pulley on the transmission to get at it but you squirt a little oil into the brake package to lube it. Maytags use a wet brake system VS. Norge and/or others that use a dry brake like a car brake. Light oil does not seem to work as well so that's why you use a heavier oil like trans oil. I love those 'squeeks when it stops' calls because I'm in and out quick and on to the next...

Tilt the washer back, remove the belts, the turn the main drive pulley by hand, this runs the brake cone up away from the bottom of the package. Then use an oiler filled with tranny lube and problem solved.
