I think I'm just stupid.

Or I had some beer goggles on at the auction. Always wanted to play with, but not keep forever, one of these solid state Kenmore/Whirlpool sets.

Yes, it is snowing and very cold outside too.

Hey Ben, more pictures please!!! You are going to have to start looking for a house with a bigger basement!!!!

I haven't seen either of the Whirlpool or the Kenmore version of the solid state BD washer/dryer up here in NE Iowa. Greg's beautiful platinum grey Whirlpool was a first and thought it was a great washer.

When I got a call from Cory earlier in the afternoon I really didn't want to drag home another washer and dryer. But after I saw them I realized that I might not see a set here for a very long time.

Hollywood Lighting - LOVE IT!

swestoyz's profile picture
Ended up going to the auction moments before the auctioneer hovered over the machines. In a quick fury I found myself getting a bidding card - and BAM - moments later I was the owner of the Kenmore set. What in the hell had I just done?

I hadn't even looked at them yet!

When I bid on the machines I waited for what I thought was a super low price. When the auctioneer closed the sale, he asked if I wanted both. After I said yes - he yells - SOLD TWO FOR TWICE THE PRICE! Miffed as I thought my bid was for the set and not just ONE, I kept my cool. I guess I had to pay extra for the cigarette smell that is now lingering in the basement.

The dryer is gas, and the wash tub has two nicks in the finish. Plus I barely broke the dispenser when loading it in the truck.

Dryer Lady K badge - a bit different than from the washer. Love that it starts as soon as you raise the lever - then you choose your options. Seems to run great.

Glad to see some good came of the auction! I'm sure you'll get your money out of 'em when you're done, Ben. Wonder if they could've made the under-lid instructions any more complicated?

Washer panel. While at the auction I noticed a sticker on the top of the bezel describing the BEEP/noise the machine would make during cycle selection. To my surprise when I plugged it in and pressed a button, it was the same beep that I had heard years ago at a friends house! Forgot that his parents had a similar set.

Gross dispenser. With some clean-up it will look much better. Wonder if Sears still stocks this? Sure they would exchange in body parts, it would cost that much!

You can see where I think it broke during transport.

Very nice set - looks like you should go to more auctions!

You'll like that dryer - very accurate and easy to operate. I love that it comes on as soon as you mash up the lever! The rapid-advance KitchenAid does the same thing but then you hear it ticking the timer to the cycle you selected.

Broke the dispenser - barely. Pray tell what does that mean?

It's easy to get rid of the smoke smell - just take up smoking. Your friends will think you're cool and many doctors recommend it to their patients to settle their stomach and aid in digestion! I'd walk a mile for a Kenmore.

That's all folks! I love that the detergent dispenser is for liquids only - just like it's older sister, the 1960 Lady K.

The washer seemed to run fine during my dry test this evening. I have NO time right now to see if the machine works. I'll clean them up and play with them for a while but hopefully someone will want a white SS Lady K set soon.

Enjoy!

Ben,

Last time I checked Sears still stocked that whole dispenser (it's now only available in one piece with the solenoids attached). Hold on to your hat when you see the price though, it's roughly 1/3 of what the whole machine cost new.

I was able to find one on clearance this past summer, and I may have to now get another as I have a 1985 Lady K that I got for free yesterday that looks to have had the dispenser bypassed (it was very securely taped shut). Yours is like mine though in that it has the option for liquid detergent in the center detergent dispenser.

It's interesting in that you have a 1980 dryer and a 1982 washer. VERY cool though!

Good luck with them!

Gordon

1st and 3rd number after 110. is the year for post 1980 machines. Pre 1980, the first 2 numbers after 110. is the year. Should have kept that latter in my opinion. Makes it much easier to decipher.

That numbering system actually started in 1974....but I agree, the numbers would be easier to read if the decade and year were side by side.

There are two cool things about the newer numbering system. One is you can tell if a machine is a standard or large capacity (most of the time anyway) and you can see what color the appliance is in the number (the third to the last digit is the color code).

AMAZING MACHINES!

Have fun scrubbing them! *LOL*
I SO lusted after those when they came out!

More amazing, still, is how one can continue to use fabric softener with that mold growth on the residue in the dispenser.

Looking forward to more pics and vids!

Hey! Ben, I have that same Set:

Except that mine are in the Coffee Color, my Dryer is Electric and they were bought new in 1982. The TV Antenna at our house that we lived in the mid to late 1980's, was hit by Lightening and that caused the Circuit Boards in both my Washer and Dryer to be burned out. After I had Sears come out to let me know for sure as to what was damaged and the cost, I went to the Local Sears Parts Department and ordered the Parts that were needed to Repair the Machines. The Tech that come out to check the Washer and Dryer out, didn't realize {I'm guessing} that both of the Circuit Boards were damaged on the Dryer and the Safety Start Switch was damaged as well. They've operated perfectly ever since after I got the Parts and did the Repairs.

It also broke-down a Portable Color TV in our Bedroom and it made an Electric {corded} Clock run backwards, from reversing the Polarity. We replugged the Clock in, by turning the Plug over and it started running again Clock-Wise. The hit of Lightening also caused the Circuit Breaker to one of the Outlets in our Living Room, to trip and it kept our pretty expensive Stereo Equipment and Color TV from getting damaged.

Enjoy them Ben Washer and Dryer, I know that I still do. "FYI" if you press the Start Switch Control up on the Washer and then right away press the Hold Button, you can change some of the Cycle Selections, but if you don't press the Hold Button, the Washer automatically sets-up a Regular Cycle, Warm Wash and Cold Rinse. That is so the Washer wouldn't be apt to damage any Delicate articles of Clothing. If you press the Start Switch on the Dryer and don't select a Cycle, it will run for approx 15-seconds, then the Signal will let you know that it is shutting off, so the Dryer won't damage any Delicate articles.

Fun times, with a "BD" Lady Kenmore Washer and Dryer, Steve
SactoTeddyBear...

I feel really stupid asking this question, but does this belt drive washer agitate in one direction only? Like a direct drive?

One direction only??? Huh??

revvinkevin's profile picture
Dan I don't know of any washers that agitate in "one direction only", they all go "back & forth" as far as I know. I currently have a DD Whirlpool and had an older DD Kenmore, they both have normal, albeit a very short and fast stroke.

I think what Dan means is that the auger agitator makes it appear that they agitate in one direction, whereas under the auger the second part of the agitator is doing the usual thing.

Who leaves their stuff this way? My machine hasn't been used in three or more years, and it looks very low mileage, but check out how someone had completely taped off the whole dispenser. It had fabric tap over each section, then the whole dispenser door was taped shut to the top.

Here's a pic of the whole machine. I can't say why, but it fascinates me. Mine needs a new pump, badly from what it sounds like.

Good luck and have fun with yours Ben, and may someone who enjoys the electronic models get it when you're done!

Yep, that explains it. I saw one of my buddy's mothers early 90's whirlpool wash a full load and I didn't see the agitation below the auger.

I remember when these guys hit the market. I think it was just about the time in New Jersey anyway, that every home had an air conditioner hanging out of everyother window. It was kinda neat to push a couple of buttons and away she goes.

Clorox "Clean-Up"---------

best cleaner ever. Eliminates odors, strips away all soils, grease, etc. Don't forget it IS a bleach, so careful of your clothes! Will make that dispenser compartment like new, after a good soak, scrubbing with a toothbrush, and flush. I've never found anything else that will clean, whiten and de-odorize an old machine any better.

Congratulations on finding such a nice old BD. I don't think we will see too many TOL's of that vintage again.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone! I'm still not sure what to think about this set, besides that they are ULTRA cool. I ran a quick water test tonight before hitting the bar since the washer is really close to the wash tub and water faucets.

The thing is amazing. Not quite as quiet as a Quiet-Pack machine, but darn near close. Don if you are listening - very similar to your 1966 Kenmore set. I really think it will be a great set to have around for a few months once I get the washer cleaned up.

I took some video tonight of the test but I'm to tired to post anything to YouTube tonight. Maybe this weekend I'll post something after snatching up one of my dream machines. Hint? Think beyond Solid State. Think *digital* ;-) more to come later.

Late 1980s?? FunGuy, the first electronic control Whirlpool/Kenmore machines were in the late 1970s. As has been mentioned several times, Whirlpool's first model was the LFA9800 in 1978. Kenmore may have been a year sooner, as they typically get the new stuff first.

I think the first electronic model for Kenmore was a '78 model also. The '79 lineup had two electronic machines, one less feature-filled under the Lady K (no triple dispenser and the standard woodgrain panel top), then the '80 line had the linear control panel as pictured here in Ben and Kenny's machines. I am fairly sure that the last issue of the electronic BD machines was the '82 model, which was in production for several years.

The reliability issues as mentioned above must have been fairly significant, as most models, if they have the longevity of a couple years of production, only got revised a couple times (sometimes a pump or a timer would be changed, which slightly altered the machine's model number but not it's overall appearance), but the final electronic model had something like 6 or 7 revisions, including two completely different processor boards.
