Hi everone. I am new to this site. I remember when I lived in Scotland my Mum having a Servis MK72 auto washer. It was slightly smaller. It had a dial to the right hand side of the facia, 2 buttons, fast spin & slow spin, bio or normal. It had an orange band programmes & brown band programmes. The brown band programmes had a fast spin compared to the orange band programmes. The bio button would make the machine fill up either cold water or mixed fill, can,t remember. The normal button would have hot fill on programmes such a no 1, 2. I was always amazed at the slow spin button. When this was used it just mainly would empty the water out and stop, not really having a spin at all. I use to love the rinses, the machine would carry on filling with cold water until it was ready to empty out, and the water would be way above the door. She had this machine for a number of years. Pity Servis do not make any more machine like this one. I also loved the square door and long soap dispenser.

Hi Paul, welcome to the club, great memories you are telling us about the first Servis front loading washing machine, first produced in 1972, it took a 9lb load, hot & cold fill, 740rpm, with a slower 460 spin for delicates etc, also it had the drip dry button which was "No spin" at all,

Had a vitreous enamel inner & outer drum with kewl blue baffles!!! is this the model you remember???

welcome Paul

The Mk72 is a really smart looking machine. A couple of family members had the follow on machine which replaced the Mk72 - it was called the Mk300 and had a silver facia, with a blue strip across the bottom. Ever since seeing those machines I have always had a fondness for the old servis compacts. Although they are incredibly rare today.

Mikes machine was an incerdible find and it looks superb in the flesh and stunning when matched with its partner dryer - the Mk75 Supa-dry.

welcome once again.
Cheers
Paul

Servis

Hi everyone.

The photos of the servis machine are great. It brought back so many memories. My mum went through loads of different washing machines, lol.

Maybe you will re call of a bendix that must of been out in the early 1970s. My aunty had this machine. It was the same size of the bendix home laundry, but dont think it was a washer dryer. It had the soap dispenser on the top, and to the right of the machine had a start button, but when she wanted to choose a time for the machine to wash, she would hold the start button in and the wash time would appear, rather like on a real, ie, wash time, rinse spin. Also, to the left of this button was the programme selector, wash programmes 1 - 9.

I will also mention at a later date some of my mums machines she had.

Thanks once again for the warm welcome

Servis

Yes Mike,

That is the very same machine my mum had. It was fab, loved the square door, the dark drum, and deep rinses. Wish servis would bring out another model like this one

Hi Paul, yes it would be a fine laundry day if these washers where made again with the same quality!!!the quality of the vitreous enamelling is superb as well as the colourways!!!

Hard to think that for its size it took a 9lb load, the same as the 27inch wide keymatics!!!

heres with doors shut....the bendix washer sound interesting, I`ll search for a pic

Servis

Hi Mike.

Another thing I remembered, on my mums machine it had a glass porthole, yet a friend of my mums had a plastic porthole.

Hi Nick, Ohhh its depressing seeing the old factory now all shut and up for sale!!!!, Did your family have Servis machines then, would love to hear any experiences!!!!....

I think I am partial and biased towards Servis of old as its the washers I grew up with, my parents still have only had three Servis washers in all 49 yrs of marriage, Servis MK2 twinny until 1978, then Servis SlimLine 308 autos set and then in 1988 a 6033 Quartz set which is still running!!!

Heres the inside of the dryer drum, galvanised steel, 9lb load, "Halo of Heat" elements round the front, with large fan at the back , drawing the high efficiency air flow through the clothes, had thermostats on the exhaust for temperature control!!!

Servis Mk 72 sold in Australia under the Wilkins Servis name

mayfan69's profile picture
Hey Mike and Paul,

That Servis Mk72 seems quite familiar. They were also sold in Australia under the Wilkins Servis name. Below is a listing of the Wilkins servis washers in Australia for 1975. I've seen quite a few of the dryers around, but none of the washers....Yet!!!

Cheers
Leon

I have seen....

ronhic's profile picture
....one of the top load washers. It was owned by a friends family whilst we were at high school. In Avocado.

She was the second youngest of 5 children and they bought it when they came back from a posting in the US....about 1975.

It was replaced in about 1990ish with a Maytag...

Oh my..!!!

chestermikeuk's profile picture
Where ever is that copy writer now...(this has a touch of Jon Jetcones copy) he`s definately needed...talk about tell it like it is...LOl

Is the 504 toploader the Maytag series or the UK design?? do maytag do the 210d arc?? "Silent Medic for Germ Free Washing" lovin it!!!

"Pigeon Pair" how very dare he, of all the words to use!!!! is that Aussy slang for something???? Am loving the description of oil filled shocks, bearings as in Jet engines (Yup) then he goes and blows it by comparing it to a "Ford Escort" oh my....!!!!

Servis Super 10 twinny, couldnt work out the 8lb capacity then saw the poly tub description, are these tubs deeper / bigger than the UK models?? Fashion tones of Mod Yellow or advocado green.....

Well i think he could add more than a dash of colour to some of todays adds...Lol

Hey Leon , great adds, many thanks for posting, but the way stuff is finding you at the moment I hope its not Tooo long before we see these "in the flesh" Cheers, Mike

Pigeon Pair

ronhic's profile picture
Is or was a fairly normal description used around white goods...normally applied to same size but seperate unit fridges and freezers where they would be placed next to each other as a 'pair'. Both handles would end up 'in the middle' (so RHS say for fridge and LHS for freezer) which gave the effect of a large American side by side fridge freezer but with more space, easier repairability (separate components) and easier to move too...

There is an example on the bottom right of page 3 ($2599) of the catalogue in the link

Wilkins 504...210d arc?

mayfan69's profile picture
Hey Mike,

The "504" is the Maytag design which have the 210 degree washing arc at 63 osc a minute. The UK designed machines were superseded in 1973.

The advert came from a Price Service catalogue which repairers and retailers could subscribe to from the late 1950's to the 1980's....these catalogies show EVERY appliance on sale in Australia. I now have the Washing Machine section, plus some dishwashing pages of the years 1961 - 1978, with the exception of 1973, which doesn't exist in any library archive in Oz.

JUST for you!!!.....i will create another thread and show what Wilkins Servis sold in Australia in Washing Machines from when the first UK designed machines were made here...how does that sound?

Cheers
Leon

Bendix

Hi Mike,

Did you manage to find a pic of that bendix washer I mentioned. All I can say is it was like a bendix home laundry centre, the soap dispenser was on the top, it had a dial for different programmes, also had a button and if u kept this pressed in it would choose the wash time, also the programme timer was like on a reel and looked like it was made out of paper, it would show the wash time, rinse, spin, and it had lights for wash, rinse, spin. Hope this info is enough to furnish you
Regards
Paul
