This ad is from "Good Housekeeping," November 1954. I thought some of you might enjoy it.

Automatic Wringer

I really like this "slick" Madison Avenue ad. Even though it's a manual washer where you had to fill up the machine, and run the clothes through a winger, this ad gives the impression that its all push-button automatic. I guess it was to compete with the new automatic washers out at that time. I remember my mother doing the laundry using a wringer (an all day job I might add) and definitly not in high heels

It is a nice looking machine. I don't see how women back then could cook and clean in heels.

Honey It Wasn't Just The High Heels

But the girdle and or merry widow, stockings, petticoats and god only knows what else a 1950's woman wore as undergarments.

Most women had simple schmates a housedress. Some simply wore jeans and one of their husband's old shirts.

It is worth remembering though the 1950's was probably the last era of "cheap" domestic help, mainly from minority women working as maids. Mrs. Ward Clever and the rest may have worn aprons and such, but rarely saw any 1950's housewife of that era portrayed on television doing heavy housework.

Mrs. Lucy Ricardo and her side kick Mrs. Ethel Mertz were a refreshing change. One got to see how housewives looked when they woke up and got the house started in order to get breakfast on the table. Curlers, bath robes, floppy slippers, pretty much summed up the moms on our block in the AM! *LOL*
