I know you can't see much of the washer, but what would be a good price for this washer? It also comes with a dual rinse tub set. The seller is asking $100.00 but dropped it to $75.00. I was going to offer her $50.00.

I think that's a good price

Does it work? What's the dual tub? Concrete or enamel on
steel? $75 is reasonable for two usable items , especially if they compliment each other.

Conventional Maytags are fairly common, especially here in the upper midwest.

This J2 appears from the photo to have been used hard. Appears to have paint scratches on the head, and the bottom roller looks worn. The gasket is missing that goes around the lid, and the knob on the lid also looks as though it has faded from sitting in the sun. If your intent is not to have a 100 percent perfect washer, with tubs - then offer what you feel. Personally I'd walk and look for something a bit more minty - and free (with a pump)! There are out there.

Ben

The seller says it works, the rinse tubs are metal. It's close by, and the seller has invited me to see it. What should I be on the lookout for?

Jim ... while I really do like a nice Maytag Model J, I think you could possibly do better by looking more. I see you live in Iowa; I bet there are a lot of good Maytag conventionals out there for you!

This one would be a good restoration project but I'll warn you, it will be really hard for you to find a new lid gasket for that machine. The lid knob and the agitator control knob are hard to find also.

What does the skirt look like?

From the top of the hose, it does look, however, like it is a pump model. I don't see the gooseneck that allows you to hang it over the sink to drain.

Also, Ben pointed out that the bottom roller looks pretty used. It also looks like the pressure is still "on". Might have left a flat spot. You can still get those rollers new; they cost about $80 a piece.

Here's a 1965 Maytag Model J that I found for the same price - $50. Granted, it didn't come with the rinse tubs, but those can still be bought new at Lehman Hardware in Kidron, Ohio. Also, this machine was used a lot and the woman using it, allowed hard water to trickle over the side in the back; it took a lot of scrubbing to get it off but as you can see, the machine itself was in good shape.

Whatever you do; have fun restoring!! :-)

I'm going to look at the washer sometime this week. I told her she need to release the pressure on the rollers or it will cause flat spots. I know of a couple other wringers available in my area, I just need to talk to the owners again.
