As some of you may remember I brought home my first belt drive machine, this one, right at a month ago. I REALLY like it because it makes all the proper "belt drive" noises that I think it should. The only problem is the top had VERY bad cancer (rust)! While I did do a few loads of laundry in it, every time I did, I would find some pieces of rust had fallen into the tub.... and one time even stained the white sheets I washed! Fortunately I discovered the rust stain before they went into the dryer so I was able to "soak the stain out" in another machine. Problem solved. Also, I found I was not proud of the washer like I wanted to be... I was ashamed of the rust. But now I have a reason to be proud! The photos before.... |

Kenny is the man!!! He had a machine he was parting out and hooked me up with the top from it! THANK YOU AGAIN KENNY!!! The "new" top arrived 4 days ago and this afternoon I swapped out that ugly, rusty top for this very nice, solid non-rusty one! Now my KM washer is beautiful again and tomorrow it's going to be moved back to the "working line up" along the wall so I can use it again!!! WHOO HOO!! |

I'd unscrew the lid hinges on the new one and clean out the debris from the bottom of lid. This will prevent rust from starting on your new top. |

Fantastic Kevin!! That is one of my favorite jobs on a Kenmore. For years it was just the BOL models that had acrylic or enameled tops, but in the late 70s and early 80s, many of the 70-series models like your were made this way, and even at least one common 80-series. I was seeing rusted tops like this on the east coast 15 years ago, and a swapped top from a porcelain model makes such a HUGE difference. It's fun work isn't it? |
