I replaced the KDS-18 in my kitchen with an Ariston (more on that later in another forum) and this weekend I swapped that out with this beautiful KDS-17. I was working on the install and restore when the Florida boys called with a couple of questions on Terry's KDS-18 so it was good dishwasher karma across the country on Sunday.

I've not had a KDS-17 installed before, this one came from Don S. in Minneapolis (thanks again Don!) and it needed only minor cleaning, a new water valve and drain valve to make it like new again. I removed the woodgrain vinyl from the control panel as I'd seen Bob in Cleveland do and I love the look. It updates the panel 30 years instantly!

Look at the shine on that porcelain - this machine had an easy life. The date-stamp on the water valve was 1/73.

Here is another shot of the front. The white panels came with it - they have been painted white from harvest gold originally.

The white is nice, but it just doesn't go well in the kitchen so I need some suggestions for "panel art" for this machine.

Some of you may remember the Hobart KitchenAid ad from Canada featuring the 17 series machines decorated with all sorts of fun things. Pictures, wallpaper, paneling, even a giant photo of a breast. I can't find this ad now, though I'm sure I did save it somewhere.

Anyway, I have the white painted gold panels on the machine as well as a set of panels NIB (not sure of color) and a set of panels with the frame/trim for inserts if needed.

Suggestions please! *Remember, I have a 15 year old son so we need to keep it "clean" in as much as possible!

You know I should have left the 'panel art' that we used to decorate the 14 with over New Years! Wait, that's right - my choice of 'art' wasn't quite up to speed with your tastes ;-) A nice snappy bright color would look good. All the guests need to know that you have a KitchenAid and not some lowly GE.

Man does it look good with the wood trim removed! Almost makes me want to install the 17 instead of the 15. Damn it!

Ben

Nice catch!

How about painting (or have painted) a Four Way Hydrosweep?

Just for fun, and maybe not forever but what about black chalk-board paint? Skyler could have fun changing out the design every weeek. I remember when you had it on the Sub Zero and it was always fun. I was surprised to see that the paint now comes in a spray can.

So I guess a huge boob is out of the question?

I'd suggest painting the access panel black to tie-in with the color of your countertops. Of course, the (upper) door itself could get one of those stainless steel self-stick "inserts" that are used to convert older appliances to a SS look............

Methinks panel-art may provde a focal-point where one is not really needed or ultimately desirable.

Take a picture of your favorite dishwashers inside and take it to a magnetic sign place with the size of the front panel and have them make it. This way will look at the favorite DW insides and not ruin the panel.

Ben, I don't know, we had a couple of panel-art variants that had a lot going for them, but I don't think either would fulfill the "keep it clean" request :-P

Well, guys, white is an easy color to mask--download the pic of the dishwasher in his kitchen, and let's get Photoshopping away!

My but you have a nice cock!

The white panels are being painted black right now, but I still have another set of white panels NIB and the custom panel kit waiting for the right idea to strike.

Wonderful machine! A bit of a Dutch accent wouldn't hurt, so I would say orange is the right color!
