I've tried purchasing a new inner tub for my A208, but all of the parts sites state that it is no longer available. With the newer orbital transmission being interchangeable with the older helical transmission, I'm thinking that the identical tub must still be available for newer model machines. I visited a local laundromat with Maytags that have the same standard-capacity tub as my A208. They are orbital models, but the model number is not visible. They have rubber cycle-selector push buttons, and a digital cycle count-down. Does anyone know which model number(s) these may be?

Thanks,

Pete

Those tubs should not be hard to come by. They were used for many years. Keep on the lookout for a junker to use for a donor. A call to a used appliance dealer, if there are any in your area would seem like a logical first step. Besides if you could find a new tub you prolly wouldn't want to pay the price anyway.

The newer machines tub is different than the one in your A208. The transmission is not the issue. In 1994 Maytag changed the top tub cover to a plastic snap on type unlike the metal one with the stainless band that your machine has. I agree with what the others have said- these should be plentiful in scrap machines. And they seldom rust out.

Thanks for the tips. The tub I have is in pretty good shape except for some very stubborn build-up in the area under the agitator. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, seems to remove it. I've tried Lime-Away, cleansers, even oven cleaner. I'd just like a brand-spanking new tub, like the new outer tub I purchased. I guess I can make due with the one I have though.

Cleaning the scum off

Hi Pete, I hate that white gunk too! I can't live with it,so I know how you feel about putting it back together like that. I use those green scratchy pads from the grocery store. I cut them into three parts,then use one at a time.Push HARD!! After a few minutes the pad fills up,and dulls itself out. Just use the next pad,and more water. These will clean the chalky deposits from the tub without damage to it. It is not easy. It takes lots of time and lots of muscle.However,like anything else,the results are worth the extra effort.

Happy clean tub:)
Rick

Thanks Rick - You're referring to ScotchBrite pads and I use them regularly in the kitchen. I'll give it a try. Short of sandblasting, I hope this works. Pete

tub cleaning

"I've tried Lime-Away, cleansers, even oven cleaner."

OK amateur chemists, what could that deposit possibly be?

Lime Away is a strong acid, oven cleaner is a strong alkali, one would think one or the other would work

Re: Alernate thought;

What if you were to try using a Paint-Scrapper, maybe it would at least loosen the "Crud" under the Agitator area. It seems to me that is what I've tried in the past, when I couldn't get other Abrasives to remove "Crud" like that.

"Good-Luck" with getting that taken care of.

Peace and make "Ol'Lonely" Happy, Steve
