it's not nearly as stunning as that stainless tub superba I picked up recently but this little dishwasher is special to me. it's my first top loader! ever!! and i love it already! here are a few pics of it and outside of some rust stains in the tub it looks quite nice i think!

and

i love this little timer dial, it pops up at the end of the cycle and you push it in to start it again. has a rinse hold, utility and full cycle. only difference between full and utility cycle is the drying time.

and

here's the detergent cup, rinse agent dispensor, dryer fan vent and the water pressure switch is in the back center.

it looks just like the water pressure switch that hotpoint used on their 1960's models cause that was my first dishwasher and that one is hard to forget.

detergent cup flips over, if ya want a 2nd wash you fill the lid as well as cup.

and

here's the pump minus the 2 filters, the fine mesh and the coarse filter. this pump style was changed after the 15 models came out, only other machine i have with the same pump is my kdi-15. stevet gave an explanation of why, basically he said pump was too powerful so they modified it a bit (correct me if i'm wrong steve).

and

here's the hydrosweep and the 2 filters.

note the fake wood laminate top has seen better days but i think it gives it character. it's been washing someone's dishes for over 40 years! God only knows what has been sittin on top of it, including pets!

and

note this hydrosweep is screwed together, it is the earliest version of the hydrosweep that made it's debut with the 15 models! later in the 15 series kitchenaid went to the hydrosweep that is glued together (again thanks to stevet's info). i like these better!

Yep, nice machine. I have the same model, except it's white with a real wood cutting board top. Pretty much the same internals, it seems.

Don't know quite what to reccomend about the rust stains. It looks like they are coming from the air vent/external fan area, so you might check that area out to see if it needs rust renovation.

I think products like Lime-Away or Zud will remove rust - but you have to be very careful to rinse them off quickly - like after five or ten mintues - because otherwise they can eat into the porcelain enamel glass surface layer. Perhaps someone else has a good rust removal solution. Good old Soft Scrub might remove most of it, without damaging the finish (Soft Scrub is basically finely powdered chalk with chlorine bleach).

Rust Stains

I used on my KD2-P a Very Wet green Backed 3-M sponge with Soft Scrub.Make sure the porcelain is wet, and with virtually no Pressure on the sponge , just lightly rub the area and that should lift up the rust. Hope this works for you. Eddie

I've always loved those KD 5s. I'm pretty sure if I found one of those, that would be topping off my Dishwasher Collection. 6 KitchenAids,2 GE TopLoaders, and a KenWhirl.
Very Nice Machine. May all your WareWashing be Yibble Free !!! Eddie

Nice find!

First, Congrats on finding that classic machine. Not too many of them around anymore. It took the nurse a while to sell it but I figured someone on here would grab it before it went to the crusher!

About the strainer pics... the course strainer is upside down. It goes the other way! I would hate to have you put it back wrong! LOL

About the wash arm support and design changes...
They changed the design of the 16 and 17 support because they changed the sump and heater configurations a bit. They used the original 16 support in the WM-1 series and then switched to a shortened version of it and did away with the 2 piece filters as used on the 16/17's most likely because the harsher and more alkaline commercial detergents would eat through the plastic. And warranty costs when they first came out and users breaking them as well would have made them rethink the design. They went to a one piece stainless steel filter assembly and lowered the support height to match up with the stainless filter. But they also removed the sealing ring that was below the opening of water discharge. You can all check this on your K/A's as they all have them in some way shape or form up thru the 23's.
This allowed water to "leak" down a bit an lessened the pressure out of the washarm. I know for a fact that the WM's would easily toss cups and glasses around so they needed a fix and that probably did it! I am sure anyone with a 15,16, or 17 will attest to the power of that Hydrosweep and how they will find bowls and such overturned in the bottom rack.

As far as the rust stains are concerned.. SImply put, the water that used to flow into that machine was loaded with iron and stained the machine. Like Ed mentioned..some soft scrub with bleach should do the trick nicely without damage or try using some ZUD which has oxalic acid and will definitely remove the rust. If you have good water in your area, it should not come back.
Coincidentally, the owner's manual we had with our KDS15 actually mentioned the Oxalic acid treatment and I remember even using it on my aunt's pull out GE d/w that was orange inside from the water in Oradell, NJ. Nothing worked to make it look nice till we threw 2 tablespoons of the Oxalic Acid into it and ran a full detergent free cycle, and Voila! brand new inside after that!
I think that gets all the mysteries solved so far!
Good Luck with it. Should last many more years. Just get yourself a new washarm support as they were discontinued many years ago.
Hope this helps.
Steve

I got mine at an estate sale. It was sitting outside and the people saw me looking at it and said I could have it because it didn't run. I took it home and don't know what the problem was because it runs perfect. I was in the right place at the right time!

Fantastic find!
These are so much fun!
I love how you can feel the wash action, and the temperature of your wash on the outer tub.
Great find!
I bet you will enjoy the cleaning power and unique sounds!

thanks

thanks for all the info and for those great pics, that kd2-p tub looks beautiful! and those pics of the electra are great too, looks like new inside and out.

gonna check around for the "zud" or other product with oxalic acid in it. i didn't want to do anything that would scratch the tub finsih but would like to get rid of the rust stains.

and as for wash arm supports i just bought 4 off e bay that will fit it for 20 bucks each, a good price. used one on my kdss-17a stainless, leaves 3 more in case i need em.

thanks
