For now, these videos are of the underside only. Darrel is being kind enough to send me a Vorpulator with the fountain filter in a few weeks. When I get the other Vorpulator, we will make videos of the top/tub of the washer.

This is the famous tub brake...

Final spin cycle

rickr's profile picture
This is a long video, but worth downloading. It shows the huge Borg-Warner transmition in action, plus how the motor self tentioner works. (one side spin, and the motor rocks to the other side for wash) Very massive contruction on this machine. This machine sat in a junkyard for 20+ years in Northern Indiana, and was rescued by Kenny in the Spring of 2006. Kenny was kind enough to offer it to anyone last summer, nobody wanted it, so I took it. YAY for Kenny (goatfarmer) for saving this rare Machine! I rebuilt it late last summer.

Forgot the "before" shot.

The spin cycle starts off as a neutral drain, then the brake releases about halfway though, and the machine spin drains the rest of the water out.

I see you turned the cold water wash switch to "off" - good job!

This is just an odd washer - it's in none of my catalogs and before Kenny found it, I had never seen one. I wonder if they had a "Touch-n-Dry" to match?

That is strange that no other "Touch n" Wash has been found around here. Darrel said that he worked for Wards back in 1969, and remembered this model. If I remember correctly, he said that there was a Touch n' Dry, dryer also. I don't know why this seems to be the soul surviver, but I am really glad to have this machine. I LOVE it! It was lots of work to bring back from the dead, but was worth every hour I put into it.

I cannot get over how massive the transmition is in this machine. It has to be twice the size of a Maytag. Here is a close up, and I have placed a penny on top to give relation to size.

Other view of transmition.

Borg Warner built truck transmitions for Ford back in the day. This thing looks as if it came out of an F350! lol!

Very cool Rick. These transmission are beasts. Look more like a transfer case to an F350 more than anything!

Rinse cycle

Jon, does your 65 Norge have the same transmition as this one? I am thinking that it prolly does. I have watched the Dr. Frigidaire video, and one or two others of your Norge and your machine seems to act like the Monkey Norge.

Yes Kenny, I think this is the only "Monkey Norge" T&W in captivity! After all, you pulled it out of the "jungle" lol!

I still would like to try and restore this one someday. I think this is a 1957, or 1958.It has the cool Timeline console. Remember how I got caught in the barbed wire while we were hauling this one out?
Oh well, maybe after the "summer home" is done. Not this year, thats for damn sure.....

MW Advertised Tub Capacity and design comparisons

What was the advertised tub capacity of the MW "Norge" washer? 16, 18, 20 lbs?

Compared to some of the restorations of Norge machines of the 1950 and their capacity I can see why this model has a "beefier" transmission, having a bigger tub to spin and a larger agitator to handle the bigger loads of clothes and water. What is the rated hp of the motor? 3/4 or 1 hp? I remember them being greater than the standard 1/2 hp most used during the same time period

I too see the similarities in motor and pump placement to Maytag machines having the "helical" drive design.

Russel, the machine is an 18lb capacity, and the motor is at least a 1/3hp, possibly more. There is no tag on it that I could see, but the 14 lb version had a 1/3 hp. I would guess this one has the same 1/3hp, or perhaps they changed it to a 1/2hp. No larger than 1/2, I am sure. A larger HP motor would not be needed due to the clutch system of this machine.

Norge motors

The big Norges had 3/4 hp motors according to the service manual.
