Hi all

Well was having a look on eBay this morning at the washers as you do. Clicked on "Distance Nearest" and was very excited to see a machine I have been after for a long time. It was in Glasgow which is only 15 miles away and it had a "Buy It Now" price of £25.
Looks to be in good condition. My other half was at work so couldn't ask him but I could not resist and purchased it.

A Bendix Super Compact 71968.

It holds 5.5 lb in weight and has a 550rpm spin. It has seperate programme and temperature dials so I like the fact you can select programme 1 but have it at anything from 20 - 95 degress.

Does anyone have any experience of these machines?
Is it a Eudora machine?
Can anyone tell me the age of this machine? (Sorry Robert if it's in the wrong forum).

Any information is appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

Hi All

Thanks for all your comments.

Well things didn't go to plan. Got an email from the seller saying it had been tested (After I purchased it) and that it was not working properly. I was offered it for FREE. I decided to still take the machine. Picked it up last night.

It has timer / programmer issues. It is a eudora machine which works on a different principal to noraml autos. The timer is driven by the rotations of the rear pulley (Like the timer in some Hoover twin tubs being run by the wash motor) It has microswitches which tell it when to turn on and off various things like the pump / water etc. Well I deducted that some of the microswitches are stuck in because it hasn't been used for a while. It will wash but when it gets to rinse it just keeps filling then it emptys some of the water out then refills and so on. I managed to free one switch and now it emptys fully and properly when it should. It now won't spin.

Im going to have a try at taking the timer out later and freeing the microswitches and then hopefully it will go through a full cycle.

I will keep you informed. And of course Pics and Vids!

It really is a cute machine and I love it and I hope I can get it sorted.

Mark

Hello Mark ill stick me ore in ere, if you dont have some go to a Maplins or electronics shop and buy some Servisol Super 10 Switch cleaner , spray this into the switch where the little stem sticks out it will free them up, try not to use wd-40 as this attacks certain plastics...

Right ive sed me peices :-)

Nice one Mark, lovely little machine, and so dinky when it rocks n rolls side to side when spinning, no distribution just keeps stopping & starting into spin!!!

I also use a warm hairdryer and a non drop bristle brush , blow the cobwebs & cure the damp, similarly pull off the wire connectors and rub with fine emery etc...

Enjoy, Mike

Hi all

Well questions answered first:

Dyson 2drums - It takes a 2.5kg dry load
Jamie - I have a pic of the drum for you.
Cornutt - The bottom one is the coin trap and the top one is the detergent and fabric softner dispenser (Have taken a pic of that for you).
Gansky - Amazingly the clothes come out ok. I was quite surprised how well the 550 spin did.
Paul - Would be good to av a natter.
Gary - Yes perfect for my smalls! I intend to wash them in the Bendix actually as I like to keep them all together in one load and not mix them with other items.
Mike - Thanks for your tips also. I love the way this machine just tumbles constantly for wash and rinse and then stright into spin like you say.

NOW UPDATE:

Found that all but 2 of the microswitches were stuck! No wonder it didn't want to do what it was supposed to. Well managed to sort the switches after much fiddling about. Was not the easiest thing to do as they were quite difficult to get out. Gary - Whoops..Used wd40 at first before I remembered I had some proper heavy duty grease. I hope the plastic will be ok. The grease worked a treat and I put them all back and started a load of wash cloths and hand towels.

Was doing well until...BANG!! I knew exactly what it was ...The capacitor. Ive had a number go on me before. I think it's when a machine has not been used for some time and I put it on a 95 wash to clean the machine out. There are 2 capacitors on this machine. 1 for the wash and 1 for the spin. So thankfully I could spin the towels before taking them out.

I have ordered a new capacitor and hopefully the machine will be up and running properly in a few days.

I remembered to take pictures along the way to show everyone.

Mark

Hi Gary

Thanks for your comments. I was very pleased with it's condition as photos on eBay can sometimes be very deceiving and you never really know what a machine will be like until you see it in the flesh. Also still can't believe I got it free. Am very happy about that...lol

Am really looking forward to putting it through a full wash cycle when the capicitor arrives (Thats if ive ordered the correct one. The one on there is 8uf so have ordered a 8uf standard one).

I don't have any picture management. I just have windows photo gallery but worked out I could reduce the size of them in paint do did it that way.

How do Mark

Can totally understand your inability to resist this machine. The wonderful Bendix compacts!

Personally my preference is for the earlier full chrome control panel version, but i definately wouldnt have ignored that machine if i had spotted it.

My like of them is totally down to the visuals - mechanically i know little about them, so thankyou for posting your pictures. Have really opened my eyes to them a bit more - really interested to know that they were eudora.

Having never seen one on the 'fun' spin cycle, do they jump about like the Eudora's that can be seen on youtube?
Also do they have that totally insane split second reverse tumble that the youtube eudoras have. whenever i watch one of those machines reverse direction is a second or so, it astounds me.
definately not for squeezing into tight spaces if you ask me, if they had the propensity for jumping round and potentially demolishing their surroundings! thats the Eudora's i am referring to, but be really useful to know if the bendix's put on a similar show.

Its amazing what they still fetch these days! I have eyed up several on ebay, but always been unwilling to pay the high prices that they generally command. Obviously there are many caravanners maybe out there see the appeal of a front loading washing machine, rather than one of those compact plastic twintubs.

keep us updated with how it all goes. looks like this one will keep you mechanically entertained for a while longer yet!

ta ta for now and congrats on the new acquisition.
cheers
paul
p.s i recently saved a piccy of your a3060 to my hard-drive, in that position, in your kitchen. Catches the sun wonderfully - a really stunning example of the breed.

Mark, does the Bendix haver a static outer tub? It looks like it from the pics.

P.S have sent you an E-mail....a machine that you may be interested in.

Post# 339517 , Reply# 39   4/2/2009 at 07:31 (5,475 days old) by mark1973 ()

Hey Paul...(Matchbox)

I bid on the same model last year but was outbid as I set a limit. You are right in that they seem to go high in price and so when I saw the BIN now price of £25 and the machine was round the corner I just had to hit the BIN button. And then to get it for free was such a bonus (As I didn't really have £25 to spend).

You are correct in that it does jump around like the Eudora one on you tube. There is a screw which you can ajust which ajusts the sensitivity to how unbalanced it will be before it spins properly. (Does that make sense?). I made the mistake of messing with it and then took ages trying to get it back in the right position so it would spin properly when it was not to unbalanced. I had it literally jumping off the floor sometimes whilst I was trying to get it right.

It does have the split second reversing. This is also controlled by a microswitch behind the pulley. There is a "round thing" that rotates and is in contact with the microswitch. The microswitch being in or out makes the motor go different directions. Thats why there is no pause between reversing. Basically the whole cycle is the motor constantly reversing with no stopping and then spin and then stop. The whole cycle is controlled by microswitches which are controlled by the rotating pulley turning the timer. simple but also complicated if you see what I mean. So many wires.

It says in the instructions that you must leave a 10mm gap each side. Well you would not have the sides of your units left if you only left that amount. Much more movement than that when its attempting spin and spinning.

I was hoping the capacitor would arrive today but it hasn't so still cant use it at the mo. If I have ordered the correct one and it works ill certainly do vids.

Hi Paulc....

It does have a static outer tub. Totally confused me at first. Have never seen a machine without suspension. Solid machine. Thats why they have the out of balance system and why the wheels are mounted differently to normal. It's so the machine can roll left to right when attempting spin and spinning.
P.s..Have replyed to your email.

If you are running XP, here is a PowerToy that will do the job for your automatically:
www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downl...
It is called "image resizer".
It does not work with Vista.

For that, you need one of many freeware programs. I use (when compelled to use Vista) this one:
vso-image-resizer.softonic.de/...
Don't worry, it installs in English, tho' it is English like Abba's songs were in a beautiful tongue which reminded one vaguely of English...

If you are using LINUX or MACOS, there are programs built in which will do that for you, tho' I think gimp is probably a good way to go for any operating system.

Hope this helps.

Those machines are wonderful - they have had some safety problems with live to frame contacts in some models. I don't quite remember what caused the problem, but in our shop we had a list of machines which had to be checked for that and this was on it. Something about making sure the harness was clear of that drive pulley, but I don't recall.

Actually, the 550rpm spin did a rather decent job, as I recall. It's not just how much force you build up, it is also how you set up the spin cycle and the length of time given which plays a role.

I like these little machines, thanks for sharing!

Oh, by the by, those micro-switches are pretty easy to get, you just have to be sure their rating is right. I wouldn't think you were going overboard to replace them all, either - that mechanism is very much dependent on everything working smoothly. They're cheap and a standard component, thank goodness.

I saw this same washing machine in Harods way back in 1993 while on a 3 week excursion in London!!!I was so surprised at its size and would HAVE ( not "would of" ) loved to have seen them make toy macines identical to this one's dementions and design!!If I remember correctly,it's price was around 150 in British currancey (pounds).

The new capacitor arrived yesterday and I must have ordered the correct one as it worked. Machine went through 2 full cycles without any problems.

Full cycle takes 1 hour:

45 minute wash:
15 minutes for 5 Rinses (No Spins):
Final 5 minute 550rpm spin.

I love it!

Keven: Thanks for the tips on reducing pictures. Rgarding recal the whole cabinet is now earthed. Even the top has an earth connected to it.
I was looking at microswitches and I might buy some and replace them as they are cheap enaough to do so.

The Dishwasher:

I will take some pics and I still have a video which I did a couple of years back.

The spin imbalance sensitivity set OK, or did she leap about.

My god - what a week we have all just had - been all go - Bendix Compact , Hotpoint 1826 liberator and Hoover 3243H Keymatic.

I dont know whether I want weeks like this on a regular basis, as I have been way too stressed by it all. But what fun it has been!

Cant wait to see some vids of it at work.

Hi

Paul:

Thanks. The imbalance sensitivity switch was a bugger to set right. I only played with it because I thought it was spinning just a bit to unbalanced for my liking. Well what a mistake..lol. At one point it was literally jumping off the floor and spinning. I think I have finally got it where im happy with it. Will take more loads to make sure though.

Gary:

I was chuffed to bits when I fitted the capacitor and away it went and started washing. I don't know much about capacitors but from the experience of having a few go bang on me I remebered that as far as I knew as long as the uf rating was the same a universal one should do the trick.

Now yes what a week!! Everytime I logged on it seemed a new classic had been found..Amazing. Lots of blood pressure and heart beats going mad this week.

Congrats again to you Rob and Paul and to you Gary and of course Robert for finding the Apex.

Now I have to go and find some pants to wash..:)

I have done videos but you tube is telling me to bugger off and it won't upload them. Don't think they are to big as it's not saying that but just that there is an error.

Is there another site that I could try?

Oh bugger.

I only know of youtube.
I might be wrong, but i think the only restriction on youtube is that each video cant be more than 10minutes long.

Hopefully someone will know of another site.

Fingers crossed
