I have had a Whirlpool Duet for about 6 years as a daily driver with no problems. Yesterday I noticed that when it goes into spin it makes a hard vibration and strange noise. It seems like the tub is out of balance and rubbing on something. It does ok except when it goes to spin. Any idea what this could be caused by? Thanks for any help.

If its a bearing problem....

I have been reading some previous posts and am gonna bet its a tub bearing problem... which, from other posts, seem common in this machine... any idea how expensive it would be to fix and/or would it be worth it... I have had the machine only 6 years and paid about 1000 for it then... or should I just buy a new machine?

I don't think that it is an issue with the bearings.
If you can, undo the bottom front of the machine.
Now look at the pump. See if it moves. Actually moves upwards.
This is common problem. If it is loose from the base of the washer, you need to put a bigger screw to attach it back down to the base of the washer. What is happening is that when the machine starts to spin, the flexible rubber hose that is attached to the sump of the tub and then to the pump is causing the pump to actually lift and thrash around a bit with the movements of the tub during spin. I actually find it sounds more like a "knock" that becomes faster as the spin speed increases.
Easy fix.
