LG- Lovely , but garbage

Is LG a service nightmare on your side of the pond as it is here? They do have their appeal, however.

I have the LG wm12220fd which is 7.5k with 1200spin, 3 years old. no faults really good performance, washing, rinsing and spinning wise. Eco an all, to go with nowadays eco friendly schemes, but uses good amount of water.

BTW- it washed better (LG Steam) than gorenje 2000rpm washer and indesit moon, on gadget show.

It all depends who you have for service. I had very quick service on my LG washer. However....too many serice calls in the 5 years I have it.

Having just read your profile and how much you like Miele and read your comment that 'you pay for what you get', I am stunned that you want to get rid of machines that are going so well and which there is nothing wrong with.

Given the economic circumstances at the moment and the fact you have some great, top brand appliances, I would be thinking of other ways to spend the approx GBP600 plus that this machine could cost you. Have a look at ebay.com.au - it is littered with LG machines (and along with Ariston appear to be the most sold of the newer machines - not a good look)

Don't be fooled by appearance and 'bling' though I am not saying it isn't a good machine....BUT

There are reasons Miele are so highly regarded.

The 500 model that you have is one of the most solid, reliable and economical performers that has been made in the last 20years. It has ALWAYS rated highly in both Which? and Choice (Australia) tests. The last of the basic Mieles with the traditional doors were built to LAST and it would be a shame to update for a brand where the customer satisfaction ratings are not even in the same league let alone the long term reliability prospects.

Still it is your money and to quote you 'you pay for what you get'

I would keep the Miele if I were you. I have read my share of consumer articles that describe the LGs and other new HE machines as a maintenance nightmare. This all started with the Maytag Neptune, on to the top loaders, and now these current fancy steam washers. If you're looking for a new machine, my advice to you is this: check out the commercial linen services and some laundromats, and see who's names are on the big triple loaders. Then make your choice accordingly. For example: In the United States it's Speed Queen, Wascomat, Milnor, etc. Since Speed Queen bases their consumer line on their commercial equipment, that's the brand I would pick. Wascomat makes soft-mount machines that are still small and light enough to be installed in some homes, so that's another brand I would consider if I had the funds. Good luck.

My machine still performs like the day it arrived... I just fancied something different to play around with and at the mo I don’t have storage till I move in a few months, the miele machines I’ve got are fantastic and I do have to agree that the mieles with the solid doors was the last few to be built to last. I’m not fond of the new doors on the new miele’s, i looked at the Panasonic machine today as well, interesting ideas behind that as well. It’s just some thoughts at the end of the day.. The miele's have had some hammer over the past 5 years of having them and probably still be standing and washing for me in another 15 years...

Something like an LG would be OK to play with, but I wouldn't have it as my primary machine or "daily driver". I, too, have had thoughts about a new Whirlpool direct drive toploader, in their red metallic color. I'm betting that not too many of them were made, so it might be more valuable to other collectors like me. I would most likely keep that in its box, only bringing it out and hooking it up for its exercise on some occasions.

Unfortunately, my bank account might not agree with what I want!

Wascomat?

I haven't heard of that brand here in Australia, however I remember seeing a picture of some old machines in somebody's back yard not long ago on this site. One was a Wascomat which had come from a laundramat (had a coin mechanism on top). It looked just like some of the earlier Asko machines we've seen here. The name "Wascomat" also makes me think they're made by the Swedish Asko company. If that's the case, they'd be pretty good. I have Asko and I'm very happy.

wascomat.net

www.laundrysystems.electrolux.com... uses this brand on commercial machines in the US
In EU they simply are Electrolux, zanussiprofessional.it, Wascator, Primus ....

They could be a strong Miele and ASKO competitor if they sold their small 6 kg heavy duty machines in the household market as TOL appliances. Maybe Miele's people are thankful they don't ...

PS: from Miele to LG : do agree with all you guys.
BTW Latest Miele : polycarbonate doors are used only on the "cheap" W1000 series. W3000 W4000 still have the same strong SS doors (prefer the old W3000 style)

Thanks for the info, favorit. Now I know to avoid buying anything from Wascomat, and I don't have to wonder why I don't see many of their machines in service anymore. You see, Electrolux moved about 3,000 jobs from Greenville, Michigan, to Mexico back in 2006. As a result, what was once the world's largest refrigerator plant was turned into rubble, and I see this as an environmental disaster since so much energy and material was wasted on building the new maquiladora. This, in addition to the decent paying American jobs that were lost. Since that time, I have decided to never purchase anything from that company again. And many others feel the same way. It's a little unfortunate that a European company has to lose some profits because they decided to turn their backs on the Americans who were buying from them.

As per the above reference, I'd rather have the cheap LG steam washer than have a new Wascomat GIVEN to me.

E'lux is doing the same here in EU ...

...and lowering quality / reliability.

Germany - They closed the AEG plant in Nuremberg two years ag (no more real AEGs, but ZannAeg'o'luxes only)
Zanker is today only a badge

Here in IT : Zanussi plants had hundreds jobs cut, because many lines were moved to Eastern Europe.

France : they "killed" Arthur Martin, a very reliable brand specialized in gas heated appliances (even washers - some old REAL ones on www.lamachinealaver.com... )

I would advise then to wait a few months until you can store a machine. Play around with any brand you like but keep the Miele, it's worth it and it's also good to have a machine like that on reserve.

Hi :-)

Personally I wouldnt get rid of your Miele over an LG, after having machines from different brands, and now Miele its clear that alot more engineering and thought goes into the design of their machines so they run much more smoothly and of course last longer because of what their made out of.

The LG Steam washer looks a nice machine, but I do find with brands like these that they focus more on looks than the actual engineering that goes into their machines ( No offence to anyone who has one :-). The weight difference in the two machines speaks alot for itself I think too, your Miele which has a 5kg drum weighs alot more than the LG which is supposed to be almost double the size with the 9kg drum.

But whatever you choose to do I hope it works out well, but I do think its best to hang on to the Miele :-)

Just thought id have my input there LOL :-)

www.saveamiele.co.uk ;-))

if it isn't enough ......another good reason to save the Premier 500.

These one-knob machines allow you to do such things you can't make with the navitronics, the W1000/W4000 and those i-pod dial in the W3000. They behave nearly as they had a mechanical timer, allowing you to skip some cycle routines

Want wool rinses only ? choose wool 30°C ---> start, then turn dial back to noon (end). When the "rinse" light blinks, turn dial back to wool 30°C

Want minimum iron spin only ? choose MI,start, back to end, then back to MI when "spin" blinks.

I hate the "separate rinses" cicle cause it has final spin only. Worse, its final spin (and "separate spin" too) is the wrinke paradise as it is continuous ( no pauses and interim tumbles). So I prefer to use this trick

I agree with many others: keep the Miele. I've had one for more than 20 years and I was sorry to see it go because of worn bearings. Otherwise it looked immaculate inside and out. I know that it can be very tempting to buy another machine with new features as that's exactly what manufacturers want you to do, but in most cases the excitement about these wears out quickly and you realise that you are not better of with the new machine. There are many more new washer models than that there are actual improvements.

For as far as I know the only area where new models usually mean better performance is in the computer related business.

Did you decide to get rid of the miele for an LG in the end?

I must admit I love the look of the LG steam washers, always have to look at one when in a appliance shop.
Unfortunalty for me I have to keep the siemens for at least the next 4 years ( think the other half would go mad if i got another machine, I tend to get bored as well, but at the moment still like what i've got).

Great choice and it has an interior light that can be used during any part of any cycle!

Oh, it is fantastic, the racks are super as they're completey movable, they can get completely flat in the bottom if you put the dish holders down! And the top can be changed with the push of a button on the side, plus both racks are on roller bearings and slide in and out really easly. I've seen it at the exibition in Reggio Emilia and next weekend I'm going back home and talk with the carpenter as we're going to need purpose built counters as there is only little space for the water pipes and connections and then, by the end of june everything should be in place. I'm putting a few photos of the appliances in the other thread if you want to see more!
