Just got an email from one of my relatives, they are looking for a good front loader set under $1000 each. Family of 4, a 4 year old and a 2 year old. I told them I'd do a bit of research. I'm not a big fan of FL's so I kind of ignore them.

So, what do the great minds here recommend?

I'm thinking they are in the $1500-$1600 range for both.

ronhic's profile picture
How about this

Bosch 300 Series Nexxt washer $899.00 (white)
Bosch 500 Series Nexxt gas dryer $949.00 or electric $899 (white)

You may be able to get them at your target price of $1600ish if you try....

Affinity?

I have mine and I love it. (Since I discovered how to use a HE machine properly to avoid poor rinses)

I still reckon the Bosch set is good value especially as it is cheaper than the Frigidaires (assuming the above price is per unit)

Absolutely nothing more than using it according to the owner's manual. = It rinses ok, but could be better.... MUCH BETTER

Than I decided to ignore the directions and make it wash and rinse much better, using a little (very little) more water.

This is my Frigidaire set that I've had for about 4 years now, and I really like them.

Agree with autowasherfreak

Personally, I have the Frigidaire 2140, which I chose over the 2940 because it was $100 less, and the only difference I could see was that 2940 had a digital display with remaining time. What I did not realize was that the 2940 has two other key features that the 2140 lacks:

1. Automatic Temperature Control: adjusts hot and cold intakes for a "true cold" and "true warm", which allows for seasonal differences in cold water line temperature, plus fluctuations in hot water line temp (if hot water is being used elsewhere in the house). ATC does not "dumb down" the hot setting on this machine, if you select Hot you get hot water line "hot"

ftp://ftp.electrolux-na.com/ProdInfo_PDF...

However, there is no heater, so if the hot water storage tank is depleted, your "hot" won't be hot. Not an issue with a tankless heater I suppose.

2. Variable delay timing. The 2140 has a fixed 8-hour delay timer. Useful to set up a load at say 9 pm to wash at 5 pm. I use this feature far more often that I expected when I first bought the machine, I felt it was a gimmick. Now, however, there are times I wish I could do a 5-6 hour delay if I arrive home at say 11 pm and need the washer to start at 4 or 5 am. Or, it's a warm day (washer is in garage), I'm running errands on a weekend, and I don't want wet laundry sitting in the machine for several hours until I get home....then a variable delay timer is great if you synchronize it to complete the cycle at your expected return time. Also, for those in areas with "smart meters", you can recoup savings on power by washing in the wee hours of the morning.

Best Buy has this machine on sale for $655.

The matching dryer (2152) is on sale for $595 (electric) or $655 (gas). You can economize with the 4000 dryer

www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jspQ...

which matches the 2140. No window in the door, but otherwise the same machine. $468 electric, or $527 (gas)

www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jspQ...

The 4000 dryer will stack on the 2140 or the 2940 with a bracket from Frigidaire that costs around $20. The controls nearly match except the selector dial on the 4000 is a small white knob instead of the large gray dial found on the 2940 washer and 2152 dryer. The footprints and shapes of the machines are identical.

I have had the 2140 washer and 4000 dryer (actually I think 4000 is a special model number for Best Buy, I did not buy there and I think my dryer is model 1442) for three years, two months, with excellent performance.

The 2940 is rated as Consumer Reports' three Best Buys. The other two "winners" are both GE's, and were unknown to most of the readers here, but the 2940 has made the Best Buy list three years in a row. Had I known about the extra features of the 2940 at purchase time, I would have bought a 2940 for $100 extra. The 2140 is still a fine machine and would save your relatives $100.

Depending on where they live, there may be rebates from the various utilities. Here in SoCal, there is a $150 water district rebate, and a gas company rebate of $30-50.

gas rebate

I checked online and the current Southern California Gas Co. rebate is $35. Not sure if it's because the washer uses less water heated by gas, or because the final spin gets clothes drier so there is less gas dryer drying time....or both. Oddly enough, I did not have to show that I had a gas water heater or gas dryer. The gas company gives the rebate on the washer, and I suppose the only person who would not qualify would be the person with an all-electric home with no gas service.

(where I live, electricity is provided by San Diego Gas & Electric, but gas comes from So Cal Gas Co. Both entities are now owned by Sempra Energy, but are historically separate companies. In most of SDG&E's service area, customers receive a unified bill for electric and gas service).

safety warning for any family with young kids and a front lo

The washer MUST be in a secured, lockable laundry room. There was a recent case this year in Orange County, CA where a child wandered into a FL washer and the 18 month sibling pushed a button, which started the machine and killed the little girl (she was two or three years old). I know most of the machines have child locks on the controls, but it wouldn't take a kid very long watching mom do the laundry to learn how the controls work.

FRIGIDAIRE Affinity

The ATF8000 and AEQ/AGQ8000 washer and dryer from FRIGIDAIRE are IMHO the best made set in an afordable price made in America. They have great features, look fabulous and get clothes real clean. They're fun to watch and have an adjustible water level using a screwdriver.I had a set in Florida and adjusted the water level just below the base of its window. It realy made a difference and had no negative results. The dryer realy worked well too. The clothes would be dry before the next wash load was ready to dry.Very quiet, dependible and stylish. I think you can find them on ebay for a great price. My favorite color they are available in is the ice blue color.

Afinities in black ATF8000FE/AEQ8000FE

I know of a place (Appliance Factory Outlet)
that has these available in black for only $1299 + shipping and handling.Their ph # is (720) 881-8242.You may also get extended 5 years pts + lab coverage for only $119/appliance!I would give them a call and see what other colors are available and check the difference in price for the same pair in blue and the gas version dryer if that is what you want.Good luck!

I might add that most of the Frigidaires, from 2140 up, are all 3.5 cubic foot capactity and all are pretty much on the same 27 x 27 inch footprint. So they are easy to fit in tight closet or clearance situations. The 6700-7000-8000 are I believe about 1.5 inches deeper due to the fancy, thick rim on the door, but otherwise are sized the same in terms of the cabinet. All of them are stackable using the Frigidaire bracket. Stacked units can be freestanding or built in. Larger units like Duets or LGs CAN be stacked, but because the units are 40" rather than 36" high, the top of the stack will be 6'8" or 6'9" off the floor.....not good unless you are 6'4" or taller!

i have the same exact set as autowasherfreak...and the price i paid was for both...dryer was electric...gas slightly higher...not bad for a matched set with decent options for about $1000.00 for the pair

Post# 344220 , Reply# 23   4/22/2009 at 19:33 (5,480 days old) by passatdoc (Orange County, California)

I remember paying $1150 (pre tax and delivery) for a 2140 and 1442 dryer. This was March 2006 during a robust economy, so no one was slashing prices. Washer was $600, gas dryer $550. I did receive rebates totalling $135 from the water and gas utilities, though it was not an instant at-the-register rebate. The next pre-tax/delivery cost was thus $1035. Currently, the water rebate is now $150, so someone purchasing the washer today would receive $185 back in total rebates. That would bring the cost of a 2140 washer bought today at Best Buy to a bit under $400!

I'll recommend the Frigidaire 2940 or one of the Affinity models.

A good friend just replaced her 15-year old Speed Queen (leaking tub seal) with an the lower-end Affinity and loves it. I've seen it in action a few times and it seems to be a solid machine. I'm amazed at how little water it uses compared to my prior-generation 3.0 cu.ft. Electrolux-made Frigidaire. She has kids and their dirty clothes come out clean.

I suggested she always use the Heavy Soil option, which adds extra wash time. That seems to overcome the nothing-to-brag-about 'good' cleaning score it receives from Consumer Reports. I noticed the Affinity's Normal and Heavy Duty cycles are substantially shorter than those for the LG, Duet, etc.

Thanks!

Hey thanks everyone! Lots of good info here for anyone looking for a front loader. I've passed on the info, waiting to hear what they decide.
