what is the model and does it have turquoise panels, or is just my imagination? It's $75.00 in Cincinnati.

Oh my yes!

That is turquoise alright! Looks like this model was late in the life cycle of that colour, probably 1965 or 1966. Wish I was closer to it...

Could be the divine Turquoise, but it could also be a custom spray to match a metal-cabinet kitchen like a St. Charles installation. That used to happen a lot.

St. Charles kitchens used to be very popular and very pricey. Unlike other metal cabinets, they were very solid (with MDF between the inner and outer panels of doors, super high-quality hardware, and more convenience features than you could shake a stick at). The St. Charles kitchen I had in a former house was a $20K installation - in the early '80s. I miss hell out of it.

Whirlpool bought the company sometime in the '90s, and they're gone now. Sad. Metal cabinets are better than any other kind, if you have good ones. They wipe clean, their drawers and doors stay square and true, they have adjustable shelves, and St. Charles' upper cabinets had lighting built into the bottom of every unit, so that every square inch of your counters could be illuminated. Roll-out pots 'n pans shelves, swing-out corner shelves, you name it. The floor of the cabinet under the sink was stainless steel, impervious to rot, rust and invading rodents.

After that kitchen, wood cabinets feel like going back to the Dark Ages. Even those with decent convenience features take a lot more maintenance than I think kitchen cabinets are entitled to.

At one point in the early seventies, KA offered a zillion choices for front panel finishes on all of its dishwashers. One of those choices was simply a set of primed panels that would take any of those colors. I wouldn't be at all surprised, however, if turquoise enameled was offered as a choice early on.

YAY - the Boob ad has risen from the dead! Thanks Ken!

My hunch is someone painted the panels. Very easy to do, and can't imagine KA using turquoise in the early 70's. Regardless, nice looking KitchenAid.

Sandy

you can still get St. Charles cabinetry. Whirlpool had them in the middle to later 1980's along with a few other lines of kitchen cabinet brands.

If that one in the middle isn't a breast, you'll have a hard time convincing me otherwise...

KDS-17 with a similar wood grain panel as in the ad above

I just picked this one up today......I stopped in the local Habitat For Humanity - ReStore this afternoon, and was surprised to see this KDS-17 sitting amongst several other newer dishwashers.

The Tub date code is 041273 which, as I understand, would be April 12, 1973.

The rack is badly rusted, plus some rust on the sides of the tub from rubbing against the rack, and some rust in the pump area.

Underneath looks in good shape.

The boob is back!! Thanks for posting that ad - I for it a few weeks ago and couldn't find it anywhere!

Everyone must have a KDS-17 or 17-A --- they are fantastic machines! This is the one I put in my kitchen a short while ago - the panels are now black.

We have a Hobart 21 series Supurba sitting in our basement here. I have never been able to test it and my housemate HATES dishwashers and refuses to let me hook it up. I say he is nuts and he can hate dishwashers all he wants if he would only wash some dishes every now and then!

Eventually I will have my dishwasher, and maybe a KD-12 someday,
Dave

Parting a classic out?

I know how fond everyone is of their 17's and the Superba 16's.

Is there anyone who is actually parting one out? I am so sorry I didn't keep the full electrical setup from one like I have done with a few 18's and a 20. My pet project would be to take the 17 electrical works which include the control panel, all the wiring harnesses and timer and thermostats and install them in an 18 series door because I need the double holes for the rinse agent dispenser and use it with the more upgraded 18-21 series pumps.

Remember, I was weaned on a 15 Superba so I know the advantages and disadvantages or that single washarm.
I really like my double arms and how well they clean regardless of what gets racked on the bottom.

So, if anyone has no need for the above mentioned items, let me know and maybe we can strike up a deal or two!
At this point, I am also so regretful that I tossed a perfectly good 19 tank in a fit of clean it all up and now wish I still have it. I could have had a new 18 already built!
