i took 2 days off in a row, rented the home depot truck (as mine is notorious for breaking down on dishwasher runs) and took a short 6 hr. drive to visit matt and family (everythingold) in grand rapids mich. and see his appliance shop/home. i also did a bit of shopping and came back with 7 dishwashers and one very special washer! i took pics of everything and had a grand time in grand rapids to be sure! i am going to make several posts of this fun trip as to try to include everything in a single post would be exhausting to both read and write! so here we go to see "everythingold"!!!!

ok, first lets get the truck! this should do fine, it can hold about 9 machines!

coppertone and this is a custom deluxe but i couldn't care that it's not an imperial. same tub, same jet action pulsator agitator, same sounds, same overflow rinse, same loud noisy timer "clicks" same magic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

had to take an extra blood pressure pill

when i first laid eyes on it!

it runs great but i will be asking a lot of questions of you frigidaire experts later on as i start to use it. have many questions about lubing it, what to watch for etc. which i will post at a later date. i like that it is direct drive, no belts, no transmission oil or internal transmission, just a motor and some rollers all exposed! guess that's why it's called a "rollermatic" huh!?!

dishwasher no 2 is a

frigidaire "slant top" top loader. i had never seen one of these before.

Post# 349023 , Reply# 25   5/14/2009 at 23:25 (5,459 days old) by soberleaf ()
it is also in great shape, tub and rack wise

think i will have to replace water seal but parts are available as i already checked for my other frigidaire front loader that uses same pump.

Post# 349024 , Reply# 26   5/14/2009 at 23:27 (5,459 days old) by soberleaf ()
same pump

same big black spray arm, same tower as my other frigidaire. matt was excited that i now have a matching set, a top and front load portable frigidaire set!

here's another

pic of it sandwiched in between a g.e. and a frigidaire washer matt had in the window. the bottom panel is there, just not on it. and he gave me racks for it as it was missing racks.

he has lots of racks, and i do mean LOTS of racks if you guys need a rack for a kitchenaid! i also got an extra silverware basket and 2 extra stainless superba screens from him. it's a kitchenaid lover's dream, wandering around his shop!

that kelvinator behind it is dishwasher no 5 that i bought!

Post# 349036 , Reply# 34   5/14/2009 at 23:52 (5,459 days old) by soberleaf ()
here it is

a coppertone D&M kelvinator brand dishwasher. i used to see the same design in the "modern maid" brand. it also had the same pump, motor and spray arms as the sears kenmores, including the roto rack machines.

i just got a sears roto rack a few weeks ago and ordered a new seal for 12 bucks off the web and motor gasket for 7 bucks so parts are there for this one should i need them and they are cheap!

love the round buttons on this one,

Post# 349037 , Reply# 35   5/14/2009 at 23:57 (5,459 days old) by soberleaf ()
that's the

bottom panel inside.

tub and racks are in great shape. don't know if it leaks but if it does a new seal will stop that problem. the motors on these spin at 3450 rpm i was surprised to find out when i tore my roto rack apart recently. i thought they would be 1725! they can pump the water!

matt said kelvinator was made in grand rapids.

i always loved that decorative pump cover with the holes in it that sits on top of the pump below the spray arm. all the modern maids had those when i was a kid!

dishwasher no 6 was in a church!

i had talked to matt previously about getting it, he told me the church would give it to me if i gave them another one. it was one of the main reasons i made the trip!

this is what i gave them, my whirlpool quiet partner II machine that i had used as my main machine before starting my collection several years ago.

here it is after we installed it in the church

can't get enough of that

blue roto rack. matt said it spins really fast when impeller starts throwin the water around.

it is not powered by any seperate spray tube like the later models roto racks by d&m, the impeller does it all! i found that interesting to say the least!

Large detergent cup is prolly for those super hygenic washes. Wouldn't surprise me the silverware baskets are original. Many D&M machines with various colored racks had the white color cutlery baskets.

If you ever actually wash a load of dishes in this machine, I wouldn't risk putting any flateware in this thing at all. Too risky to damage the impeller.

it does have a chip out of it but i watched this machine operate before we took it out and it really throws the water!!!

does anyone know where i would get a new impeller/ DOES ANYONE STILL MAKE THEM? ANYONE HAVE AN OLD ONE THEY WISH TO SELL? CAN YOU FIX THEM WITH ANY TYPE OF CEMENT????

he even loaded me up on my truck with the help of a nice young guy with big arms! there was no way i could have loaded those heavy kitchenaids, or the jet action washer which seems to weigh a ton!

i had a hell of a time unloading it all once i got home, but at least it was going down the ramp this time! ofcourse the helper could have come home with me had he wanted to. oh well, can't have it all!

Nice haul Peter! Could the missing chunk of impeller be inside the machine? Maybe you can find it and epoxy it back on (?)

OMG

That Modern Maid is to die for! The house I grew up in had Modern Maid appliaces, wall oven and gas cooktop, in copper. They were beautiful in that tiny kitchen.

That KM dryer was awesome too! The matching washer had a Vari-Flex agitator.

Pete,

So glad you have been able to add this first Impeller dishwasher to your collection. You will really have fun with it. Amazing to me that the impeller turns the roto-rack. New impellers will be hard to find. The rotation is the same as the G.E. and Hotpoint impellers, but I have no idea if they are interchangeable with the Modern Maid or other D&M machines. Personally, I would not attempt gluing a chip back onto an impeller, because later it could come unglued and do more damage in the process. Best look for a replacement. When you get that impeller off, show us a picture looking up inside the impeller so that we can see the mounting method that was used. The GE uses a flat surface for engagement with the motor shaft.

And that slant-top Frigidaire dishwasher is so cool. There was one on Craigslist in the Denver area a few months ago which I would really have liked to get. Alas - it's gone now.

Again, congratulations on your wonderful haul.

Mike

Dial in window

I like that dial-in-window stuff. That would allow larger print for older folks, too. I'm surprised it didn't catch on. It appears they had the material choices correct-neither of the pictured machines looks yellow or opaque.

Pete,

Rather than the G.E. style impeller, most likely you have the style shown in this diagram. The other impeller machines used this style.

What a great trip and haul you made. I had no idea that 'everythingold' had so much inventory. That is really cool that you got so many dream machines.

Of course I'm very partial to the 65 Frigidaire washer. I grew up with that same model in coppertone and that is what led me to this site years ago and the rest is history.

I also have a similar dishwasher to the Frigidaire flip top that you got. It's a fun machine. I'll attach an ad for it.

Looking forward to hearing and seeing more.

Patrick

The Viking (Canadian store-branded Westinghouse) dishwasher that I grew up with had a flip top upper rack too! Must see if I can scan a picture of it...

Pete, yep, Alex was pretty hot. I also liked bob Crane when he was in the show. But I still managed to check out the appliances lol.

thanks!

dishwasher crazy- thanks for that diagram, it will be awhile before i tear into her but when i do i will def hit you up with a bunch of questions. i might get impeller off in next couple weeks but i doubt it, i have all these machines to find places for in my house! like i told you i am using them as focal points in all my rooms!

appnut- oh yes, i always envied donna stone! i think my first crush was on wally cleaver however!

pdub- i love that pic you posted! that dress, those vivid colors, it looks so 60's to me. that bird should be on hullabaloo dancing behind nancy sinatra cause them boots are definately made for walkin!!!!!!!!!!

turquoisedude- would luv to see a pic of that, i save almost all the pics you guys post.

thanks to all again, now i just have to figure out where to put em!

You got yourself some cool machines. I just love those vintage KitchenAid dishwashers.

Amazing Trip!

Great Pictures Peter!
You had a great trip and made some great friends!
I love all of the machines you found, but I really like the Modern Maid! This is such an interesting dishwasher! I would also say rare! I love the timer with all of the instructions of where to place the dial! Too cute!
One question... On the handle to close and lock, do you also continue to push it to the right to start the dishwasher?
About the chunk that is missing out of the impeller. I would say it would be fine to use it as is until you found a replacement. I bet the end of the impeller is less important. I would say that the middle of the impeller is where the real "scooping" of water occurs. Then it is flung upward. In my mind I would think that it turns at such high rpm's, that it would not make too much of a difference with that small chip missing.
I think with Impeller machines, any impeller would work. If it fits, it will do the same job, or sometimes better if the "scoop" in the middle is more defined.
Thanks again for the pictures!
Brent

What a great haul! I've always wanted to try a D&M front-loading impeller machine and that's a super-cool one to have! The Kelvinator is a fun machine to have, that could easily be a daily-driver for most users.

THANKS

makes sense to me about that missing chunk of impeller, this machine will not be used hardly at all, def not in general service. i doubt i'll ever put dishes in it but i do want to try it out at least. when i take impeller off i will post pics and see what is available. i have so much to do with all of these it will most prob be awhile. right now i am finishing up a restore on my sears roto rack i recently picked up in tenn. and a kdi-15 i got here in cinti. last fall.

autowasherfreak- there are still lots of old kitchenaids out there, i know matt has a bunch at his shop in grand rapids, and everyone needs a kitchenaid i feel! they are simply the best dishwasher ever made period in my book!

hey ganski1

thanks, i'll never forget you for that great timer you sent me for my kd-12!!!

i'm afraid to use any of my collection as a main machine except the kdss-17a stainless tub i got from boston. it is under the sink counter and now has a full set of external controls that lets me control all aspects of it's operation myself. stopping timer to extend a wash, turning on water heaters to heat water, activating fill and drain solonoids to add rinses, and lites to tell me what all is "on" at the time.

i chose it as it has a stainless tub but is still a vintage kds-17 and i figure that tub is good for life.

all my other machines i am placing around my small 800 sq ft. country cottage house as i call it. i'm putting my favorite 5 portables in the kitchen and will use them somewhat frequently as i just love portables. prob cause when i bought my aunt and uncle i lived with their first dishwasher it was a g.e. portable. 1972 model! i use the kd-5 top loader quite a bit as i love it love it love it for some reason! just love the "whooooshhh" sound it makes when i close the lid! sounds like a tornado inside! i also added a switch on the back to turn off timer and extend a wash if i like.

the rest of em i will place in all the rooms but i am going to develop some type of hook up so i can use any of them if i want to from wherever they are as i feel i should prob run them once in a while to keep seals moist. some will have to be restored as far as pump parts go, seals etc. and i will just work on them one at a time for the next 50 years i guess!

the jet action washer is going in my living room as the focal point as i want towatch it ever so closely for any leaks or other adverse behavior and i can't do that if it is in the laundry room due to space problems. i am going to hook up a quick connect so i can run a short length of hose from my laundry room tub to the washer to fill it and some type of quick connect drain as well.

i will say that matt told me to bypass drain pump if possible and use it as a gravity drain which i can do. this way all water will drain out of outer tub and that has to help it stay dry and healthy! i want to use it frequently but am going to be very very careful with it! and again i am going to monitor it closely, in the living room it will be easy to do that!

you would think i had a new baby in the house or something!!!!!!!!

It was so nice to have a visitor! It gets lonely up here in the arctic. My wife loves guests, and bought everything she could think of for Pete, except his other addiction: Pepsi.
Irony Abounds!

Pete took the better part of three years of collecting. And he promised that he would build a Museum! I can't wait to see it. The only machine that was hard to let go was the Kelvinator. Even though it is a D&M, Kelvinator is from Grand Rapids Michigan.

Thanks again Pete. These beauties are in good hands. godspeed. matt
