Jeff came down yesterday, we rescued the Supreme 80 from the long-closed Whirly dealer where I worked summers during high school. Perhaps someone may remember the machine from my mention of it in July of 2007. It'll camp-out in my garage until Jeff fetches it later.

M/N LPA7804W2 (1966 model-year)
S/N 01047J551
Anyone have a translation for the S/N? It's a different syntax than the current coding.

It does work, we ran a several test cycles, washed two loads.

The Wash 'n Wear cool down does not agitate. Runs repeated partial-drains and refills through two timer increments. It does the low-speed shift at 4 mins, with remainder of the cycle continuing at low speed.

Interestingly, the spray rinses are only 3 seconds long

Awesome, Glenn, it looks like you were able to determine that it was built in 1966. Thanks again for turning me on to that phenomenal machine.

Or maybe it’s 1965?

Thanks, Leslie!

Ted, the store owner's son who did most of the appliance work, refurbished the bearings and such some years ago. He seems to have replaced the original bakelite Surgilator with a poly Super Surgilator ... :-) This machine was used by his mother at their house in town next to the store.

One of the lid handle mounts had broken, fixed by running a screw through it. Ted had long-ago gotten rid of the parts left after his dad died and they closed the business ... but there just happened to be a NOS lid handle on the shelf. Yay!

Glenn

that light blue Surgilator I believe is the first that had the 'splined' drive in lieu of the hex style drive block that the machine was originally built with.

Also, the undulated vanes were enlarged to increase the washing action / load rollover.

This dryer that was used with the washer is still there and available. It runs, but needs some refurbishing, and the pushbuttons don't all work. IIRC, a high-temp thermostat is on either the Low/Delicate or Med/Perm Press button.

Ted gave me three "horse-shoe" pumps. All are in boxes, one is still sealed (not pictured). Anybody need one of these?

DADoES ...What a nice machine, that is one of my Favorite Surgulaters it can really roll the clothes in a nice flexible fashion with a slight delayed action, unlike other straight vanes. And what a cool stainless cap, Love it. Hope the best to you and the machine. There are a lot's of fun in a low level wash i love that sound very splashy and rhythmic. Enjoy ! Darren k

Beautiful washer. I love Whirlpools with that style console.

Have a good one,
James

Here is the control panel of the machine I am going to use for parts if the Supreme 80 needs any repairs.

Glenn -

Two things...

First, I know someone in the club that would love those pumps, whom I owe more than one favor, so if you want to find a good home for all three pumps, I would LOVE to buy them.

Second, about the serial number....during that time Whirpool and Kenmore serials began with the 5-digit unit number, then the plant code, followed by the year and month. So, your number 01047 is the unit number, and J551 is Saint Joseph, 51st week of 1965, just like Magic Clean told us. If this were translated into the later style, it would come out a J55101047. I like machines that came out of Saint Joe, they are nowhere near as common as Clyde products.

Good luck with the machine and please let me know if the pumps are available.

Thanks

Gordon

1970 Whirlpool:

I notice it says Pull to Start, Push to Stop, unlike the 1965 Whirlpool above. I didn't think this change was made until around 1974. For Kenmore washers that was the first year of models that started by pulling the knob. Makes this one more interesting.

Have a good one,
James

Blast from the past...

My mother had a Whirlpool just like that, which lasted for 6 years in the basement. If only common sense prevailed back then!
