Instruction ... remove the "metal sleeve collar" on the transmission shaft ...

Following a set of instructions copied from <www.applianceaid.com/tub_seal_rep...>, I'm now stuck at the above step.

The "metal sleeve collar" (being the inner bearing) that fit's over the transmission shaft doesn't want to be removed. I guess being in place since the washer was new in 1970, it's stuck.

What's the "trick" to unsticking it?

thx

There are several ways to do this:

1) You can gently heat up the sleeve bearing with a torch to loosen it up.
2) Another way is to gently take a chisel and hammer and split the edge of the sleeve. On alot of Maytag transmissions, there are 'notches' in the transmission right under that sleeve so you can work the chisel down that with out damage.
3) use some penetrating lubricant like WD40 and try to lube the sleeve and then grab on with a pair of channel locks and twist back and forth as you pull it up and off.

I've had to chisel more than a few off due to moisture corrosion in between the sleeve and upper transmission housing. Usually on the LAT's more than anyone else... It's doable. Good luck!

Thanks for the response.

I've tried your third method, and I've also attempted removal by twisting the sleeve with a pipe wrench, to no avail.

As the shaft does have the grooves you described, I think that I will have to resort to chiseling it off, as you related you've had to do. I just needed someone else's experience to guide me.

thx

By the way, to what does "LAT's" refer?
