I've often wondered why, but I've never found out why Philco Washers had their Lids open the opposite of all other Washers, going from Left to Right, instead of from Right to Left, with the exception of the Washer Lids that open from Front to Rear? Didn't they have the capability of allowing you to Reverse the Lids anyway? I also "BTW" really liked the newer {probably around the Mid-1960s} Philco Washers, that had the Extra Large Lids and the beautiful different Colored Lens's over the Cycle Selection Push-Buttons. I would like to find a Philco Matched Top-Load Washer and the Dryer like that, also with the Window in the Dryer Door.

Peace and Happy "Dash" and Philco Laundry Days, Steve

POD Philco Washer Lid Opening

I think the reason that the Philco washer lid opened to the right was because all Philco dryer doors were side opening and that they only opened from right to left, and only 90 degrees at that. So it made it easy to load the matching dryer if the washer was on the right side of the dryer. If the washer was to the left of the dryer, the dryer door got in the way when loading, and the door couldn't be switched to open the other way. Plus, Philco/Ford never bothered to redesigned the dryer when it bought out Bendix and it stayed that way until its death at WCI.
