I FINALLY found a Halo-of-Heat dryer around here! I swear....it's like people don't ever sell dryers or give them to the thrift stores.....

Long story short, when I saw this one at the local thrift store, I whipped out the check book so fast it made the clerk's head spin!

They had it hooked up at the store even so you could check it out. Nobody knew how the timer worked..... I set it to "Damp Dry" to check out the circuit board.......it started up and 12 seconds later it went "Ding"!

And in my favorite Maytag color......Avacado.......Oooooh I love it!

$75 later (that included the delivery fee) and I'm a happy camper!

Next to the GE...

Harvest Gold and Avacado sitting next to each other just look so festive!

Panel Closeup

The ONLY flaw on the whole machine is where the stupid price sticker was attached. It was one of those little cheesy Avery dot labels, and it took the white paint off when I pulled it off! I guess sitting in a 110 degree warehouse for a couple weeks took its toll on the vintage paint...

It's a DE606

Any idea of the age? Can anyone decode the Serial number for me?

In case you can't read it, it's 705775 K7

Even the lint filter is intact and free of holes!

Someone REALLY took care of this machine.....there's not a scratch on it........ANYWHERE. I swear it looks like it just rolled off the assembly line!

How does this go together?

On the lint filter does the spring go behind or in front of the filter disk? With it behind, it seems like the filter would flap around, but with in in front it's a PITA to clean the filter...

Last one...

The dial. It was a little sticky when I got it. A drop of oil cured that!

All I need to do to the machine is replace the belts. Inside the machine was spotless too! There was a thin layer of lint inside it, but that vacuumed out in a hurry. All the pulleys and the fan got cleaned up and lubricated too! It's definitely been used....has the original belts on it and they're starting to delaminate! Gotta replace those soon....

What a beauty! She came off the assembly line on May of 1970.

The porcelain and firing technique used on the drums of these upper and TOL models are bullet proof. You can run them HARD for YEARS and they still look new. Kind of like the exterior cabinets of GM Frigidaire's.

Lube up all of the wearing points with turbine oil and it'll be almost dead silent for many decades to come!

As someone who has HOH

experience, it is "waffle," spring, screen. I was so delighted to get my first "Big Load" dryer with the filter in the door opening, and delighted with my current Dependable Care.

Maytag dryers were magnificent, once upon a time.

tristarcxl you're missing a piece of the filter.

The spring should be rolled to the base of the hub of the
filter/screen retainer. There is a piece that is placed between the screen and the concave/vex (depending on how one feels ,I reckon) retaining piece. The purpose of which I suppose is keep the retaining piece and the screen separated,
and perhaps effect somewhat of a seal between the edge of the screen and the assembly's housing in the back of the drum.
If I had fresh batteries I would include a picture of the
piece. Perhaps someone else will jump in here with a photo.
Love the Avocado!

Oops!!

I overlooked the piece I blabbed about; it was clearly present
in the pic below the "label". The spring goes where I stated,
I believe it facilitates snug fitting of the "waffle" retainer
piece.

Nice dryer!
Are they getting hard to find? I have one sitting on my trailer, in white, that I was going to scrap. Maybe I'd better rethink that.....

WHAT A CATCH!

Cleaning the filter-

There is no need to remove the mesh filter from the larger holder.

Simply bend the mesh slightly back from the holder (of course remove the whole affair from its place in the dryer) and stick your fingers in runnign them along the mesh to retrieve the lint.

The spring, BTW, does not go between the parts but rather holds/locks the mesh filter on the shaft of the holder.

Great dryer

They were real work horses. I bought one for my mother when I first went to work in 1968. Never a problem with it -- quiet, and dried everything well.

On the lint screen, I don't remember ever having to remove the spring to take off and clean the lint off the screen. So that makes me think the spring went on the retainer between the retainer and the screen. With the retainer in place, that kept the screen in place and the spring was merely to assure that the retainer fit snugly onto the hub of the dryer drum.

Good luck.

Very Nice Set ;o)

My favorite vintage colors too...I miss our old Maytag washer but I have always had a whirpool dryer with the exception of the new Maytag dryer we got when we moved in here in 93, it lasted 4 years and caught fire. Other than that it was a decent dryer lol. Good luck with yours!!!

Very cool dryer! Does anyone else find it unusual that a 606 model has the brushed, rather than polished, trim on the control panel? I seem to recall the brushed was usually only found on the lower end models.
