Well the Maytag/Samsung Neptune gave up the ghost this past weekend by yaking up grease and peeing all over the floor and blowing out the controller. So I didnt bat an eye when I told Scott the the washer sh*t the bed. So we went out and bought this one.
Before of what I had

Are all the rinses on this machine cold, or is it automatic select?
Nice looking machine. But it does look like SQ saved some money on the panel design from previous years. But it's whats underneath the covers that counts.

Yeah all the rinses are cold. There is no "dumbing down " of the water temps for the wash cycle. Warm is warm and Hot is whats coming out of my water heater at 140. Rinsing is superb with this washer. Extraction I will have to admit isnt bad but its not like it was with the front loader. The washer does get up to 710. What I might do is with the final spin is to run the spin cycle twice to see how much more water I can get out of the clothes. But I will say that its nice to finally be using water to get clothes clean and rinsed out well. Plus and I know some people could care less but I care...its nice to get the wash done in 35 minutes per load instead of 2 hours like the Maytag took. This alone will save me time and I banged out 3 loads in 90 mins. I love that!

Nice SQ! Boy, that Maytag didn't last long, did it? Doesn't seem that long ago you posted pictures of the pair when they were new.

Kic---Why are you jealous? You have one of these fine machines yourself, don't you?

Well that Maytags were new in 2005. The washer was having issues like a TE code and then the recall on them with a chance for a fire. Then for the past 3 weeks the bearings were sounding kinda odd and I was finding grease spots here and there on the clothes. Then on Sunday she decided to yak up globs of the stuff and was leaking then I got a poof and then nothing was happening. Smelled like something electrical...you know that acrid smell that you just know something is not right. Tried to restart her but it was no go. She will make a nice Toyota someday.
I will have to say this one thing. We have a Samsung fridge that we have not had any problems with. This washer Maytag should have thought twice before farming it out to Samsung in Korea. The reports on Epinions will make ones hair stand on end when ya read them about that washer.
The dryer has been good but I know eventually I will want the Speed Queen dryer. With that dryer it has a nice large door opening. The Maytag is a tad tight.

I take it that you had the Maytag hauled away? That SS cylinder would make an awesome flower planter/pot.

Mike, nice washer!

When removing loads, be careful of the bottom edge on that agitator cap. It's sharp! We gouged our hands pretty bad on it a few times, before finally calling Alliance. The guy went through a whole bin of caps ("some are better than others", he said) and sent us one with a smoother edge. It's much better now.

Jeff I am fully aware of the sharp edge on the softener dispenser. When i had my Amana washer it was the same way....with a much smaller opening so i got nailed quite a bit. I eventually had to take it out and use the cap that came with the washer. Alliance needs to retool the mold and make a softer edge to it.

My new Speed Queens

Congatulations on your new purchase. I had my SQ washer and dryer delivered one month ago. I love them. I puchased the TOL top loader, and dryer. I don't know how to post pictures or I would show them as well. They are great machines. I have not had the problem with my fabric soft. dispenser being sharp at the edge though. I wish you the best of luck with your new machine.

2 hours!? Wow..

My FL takes about 45 for a load.

Be ready for your water bill to go up, and water heater (Gas or Electric bill)

Post# 368003 , Reply# 20   7/28/2009 at 23:25 (5,382 days old) by jeffg ()

45 minutes? On which cycle?

As for the difference in water and energy bills, the first of those is negligible, and the second is probably non-existent. Most front loaders take 1.5 - 2 hours per load.

Post# 368026 , Reply# 21   7/29/2009 at 03:05 (5,382 days old) by toploader1984 ()

45 min on the speed cycle which prob is a 5 min wash and no spin between rinses and the other 40 min is the washer trying to decide to spin, like my LG used to do.

Wash time.

I have the GE "FridGEMore" model, and no, it don't spin for 40 minutes of trying to figure out what to do.

This is on normal cycle with extra spin.

I like the look of the Speed Queen, very simple and basic. The front load cycles do seem rather long. The longest one on my Frigidaire is 60 minutes and the shortest I think is either 30 or 32 minutes. I have noticed that on certain loads it takes forever to distribute for the final spin.

Can you do some videos of her in action?

awesome idea!

"I take it that you had the Maytag hauled away? That SS cylinder would make an awesome flower planter/pot."

That would look fantastic on my patio, and I need something large. Do you have any pics of these conversions?

(pardon me if this has already been discussed, I'm kind of a newbie)

Never would have thought of taking the wash drum and making a planter out of it. The SQ washer is basic and 1 speed. I figure I rarely ever use gentle on a top loader and with this washer the Handwash/Delicate wash cycle is like a Maytag FabricMatic system where it washes and soaks. I wanted a basic washer since I have the tenant from hell and he is brutal to machines. We got this washer because it can take quite a bit of abuse. No warm rinse and its pretty straight forward.
As far as my Mieles go...I had my fun with them and sure they are very well made but the dryer is rather slow. I tried something a few months ago where I had my Maytag 613 and I used to Miele dryer to dry. The Miele dryer was super slow. Granted it pulls a rather huge amount of air thru the load but it lacks heat. Unless a load is spun to within an inch of its life like it is with the Miele washer then its a rather slow dryer. The Miele washer isnt for people with pets. That Honeycomb drum design is nice but it doesnt let hair thru and its kinda vicious to fabrics. If I use the Extended Wash the clothes emerge clean but they look like they are rather tired looking. So its time to give them the heave ho.
I am loving my SQ washer. I will get the dryer soon.

Post# 368122 , Reply# 29   7/29/2009 at 14:15 (5,381 days old) by jeffg ()

Guess it's just preference, but we use the slower spin speed on our SQ for everything except towels and whites. Clothes come out of the dryer wrinkle free and ready to wear, while that's not the case with the faster spin speed.

Very nice looking SQ. There is only one dealer that carries them here now - a long-time TV/Appliance dealer closed a while back. I've been wanting to see the new line in person but haven't had a chance to get over there.

I'm surprised at the Miele washer and dryer. I often wondered about the honeycomb drum's ability to remove heavy soils and hair, etc. so that really isn't a shocking revelation but then my Duet isn't the best with pet hair either.

Do you know what the wattage is of the electric dryer? I can't find the info on the Miele website.

The wattage on the label of the Miele dryer is a whopping 4300 watts if I am reading that right.

Well, I don't have any pictures, however it is simple to do. All you need to do is get the clothes basket out of a Busted Topload washer or take the cylinder out of a bust Frontloader(these are plentiful) since the cylinders in FL machines are SS and the clothes baskets in SQ/Amana machines are SS they won't rust when placed outside in the weather. I had a teacher that would come to my house to collect them when I would scrap machines. The baskets and cylinders have plenty of holes for water drainage, however the openings of the FL cylinders may be a little small. Another issue with the cylinders the shaft. You can either cut it off or stick it in the ground. If you have issues cutting the shaft off you can have metal shop do it for you. Getting the cylinder out of a busted machine is quite easy. You can take your frustrations out on it first(how much you paid for it and it only gave you 3-5 years). Since that tubs are plastic, you can tear off the plastic, remove the pulley, try to remove the cylinder from the bottom plastic piece. For clothes basket, remove top of machine, take off slashguard, remove agitator, remove agitator drive(if one), remove spanner nut(special tool required), remove basket. Some baskets are attached by a series of hex nut at the bottom of it.

Welcome back to the SQ family!

Hi Mike, I know you're loving that washer. I too, enjoy the simplicity of the machine and it's very easy to operate. When you get the matching dryer you'll love it too. Fast drying times and a big drum with the big loading door too. It's nice to know there is a company that makes a superb machine built with quality! You'll get many years of service from this machine!

Enjoy! - Mike L.

The funny thing is about this washer is the breaking in period. When it arrived it was making this popping sound then it stopped making that sound. The transmission also had to break in and the washbasket indexes like a Frigidaire washer WCI made of course. I know that over time the indexing will stop since the brake pads need to get the film of grease off. The spin is interesting where its slow spin during drain then it will ramp up to 710. She sounds very Maytag-esque. I love the lint removal and it makes it easy to not use the dryer to hang out the laundry to dry.
Friends of ours have the SQ dryer and they love it. What amazes me on the dryer is how the auto cycle works and how well it works ...without an electronic sensor system. Very accurate drying. I will be getting one soon. And this model.

Mike, it took about six months for the indexing to (mostly) stop on our AWS76NW washer. After a year it still hasn't stopped completely, but it's less than 1/8" now.

a few?, this machine should last at least 20 years!!! i am getting the same machine as yours, the base model in a year or so, i have a filter flo rite now. when i get the speed queen i am going to rebuild the filter flo, put a new clutch and everything, use it for things like shop towels and dog beds.

So what I'm saying, those who have had a front load washer for a while and go back to a TL will see a difference in your water bill (depending on where you live I suppose) I do like the looks of that machine though :)

well our water bill includes the sewer bill and it usually runs about $118 every 3 months. Not cheap. The water usage on this water is rated an "average" 31 gallons per load. One thing I will say that it fills up fast. On warm both valves are open fully and it takes about 3 mins to fill. One thing is that with the Max fill the water level is 2 rows below from the top. I stick around and use the handy dandy reset feature to add more water to the top row of holes. I might tinker with the water level switch and rest the screw to fill with more water.

if you check the Speed Queen site and click on "worldwide" you will find that Speed Queen is not authorized to sell in Canada. But you can find the same model/machine at the Huebsch site. There are plenty of dealers in Canada. It goes by province.
