Hi club people, Does anyone know and have if possible pictures of the First Front loading Domestic Tumble Dryer in the USA and Europe with dates. I would think America First 1930/40's then Europe late 1950's ? Interesting, I know Bendix did the first Frontloader first

It was Hamilton

In the 1930s or so.

There is a sketch of it in the book: "All the Comforts of Home" by Merritt Ierley

According to the book: The inventor of the 1st electric dryer was J. Ross Moore in 1930. It weighed 700 pounds, had no thermostat, and a heating element underneath the drum. Later on Moore moved the heating element above the drum and added a thermostat to prevent scorching the clothes. The design was purchased by the Hamilton Manufacturing Company.

I would include the sketch of the dryer, but I haven't got a scanner. The sketch is on page 229, with an explaination on page 230.

Everyone should own this book!
Dave

Hmmm... think I know what I am going to ask Santa Claus for this year!
It's funny, but I would have figured a company like GE or Frigidaire would have pioneered the dryer. Thanks for the information!

Dryer

DAve

Thanks for this information, It shows that before the 1930's washing technology was quite crude. My suspicions were right in the USA made the first dryer. Pity I could not have a scan of it. What other details does this book contain. Thanks

I have some very early Frigidaire dryers and they were made by Hamilton.
