I didn't know they made the ultra-compact units that long ago. I learn something new from this site everyday. I live in a duplex, and it was built in 1948, so while the house is pretty decent in size, the kitchen is a tiny galley style. I don't mind galley kitchens, but I like them a wee bit bigger. This one has no real room for my compacts. I'm planning on putting the Maytag A-50 and DE-50 in there when they're finished. I wish I had a creative way to vent the dryer though, but as soon as my caster kit comes in, it will be mobile and I'll just wheel it to the dining room and run it out the window, it's by far the most mobile dryer I have, and drys so quick! I recently found out it was a mini- Halo of Heat and that's awesome. 110V and it dries a full basket in 45-60 minutes depending on clothing density. Anyway... back on topic: I have a Danby DDW496W and a DDW497W counter-top models and I LOVE them. They're a little cheap, but they hold up pretty good (the DDW496W is heading close to 8 yrs) and they go on the counter. I couldn't even have a regular portable in this kitchen, and besides I don't generate a lot of dishes. I'm posting 2 pics, on of the 496 (older) and one of the 497 (new). I originally got the 497 off CL for $150 and it's great, but only has a 1000w heater and 5 preselected modes that are pretty long (70 minute minimum). When I got the Hotpoint Rim-Flo for a friend, the guy GAVE me the 496 as it was on his porch in the way. The 496 has a manual timer, which I REALLY like, and a 1300w double element heater that has it's own button. I can run the heater in any cycle and it's great! Also the cycle times are MUCH shorter, the "SHORT" is less than 45min and things come out sparkling. It took forever to get the gunk out of it from sitting outside with the door open, but all the rubber bits were good and after 2 descalings and a lot of plastic brush attacks it's clean. The boiling hot water did most of the work and man that heater kicks butt! Anyway, even though these are newer, I thought this to be relevant to the thread. These guys are all stainless steel inside as well, and the 496 has a thick turquoise rack like a big machine. I've posted pics to my Flickr w/link as well. I think they're neat machines. -Tim |

Myself and Chris, both have one of these. like them very well. Mine, thou, needs a new rack and silverware basket badly! ( I learned a lesson not knowing what I was really to look for..) like the look of the newer one. They are fun to have and useful too! Anyone got a spare rack and silverware basket willing to part with? Rich |
