First Maytag Neptune Encounter

I have a Maytag Neptune that I bought in Dec. 2000 (MAH7500AWW), and I've never had the mold problem or any other problem. It's a cool machine and you can program and name 24 of your favorite cycles with the touch screen. I always leave the door open after the wash cycle until the dryer finishes and then I close the door. Some people don't do this since they are afraid the light will burn out. The light on mine has never burned out, and if it did I would just replace it. I never use bleach in my machine, and I also rarely use cold water. I think the mold problem is experience by people who wash everything in cold, never leave the door open, or only do laundry once a week (probably most of America).

Steve, you're right, the mold doesn't plague commercial machines since they are used much more often than home machines.

Austin, I do use bleach before I wash my clothes in a commercial machine (like when I�m on a trip). I run it empty with bleach and then run it with my clothes in it without bleach (you get to spend more time at the Laundromat). Or for fun when not on a trip you can always take a load of old clothes you don't wear anymore to the Laundromat.

Checkrate/Likes Well, I just came back from a short vacation to Lake Michigan (I LOVE the beach, I mostly just like to watch the HOT straightboys wrestle...) and as a small vacation for myself, I took a trip to the laundromat and what do they have? Maytag Neptunes!!!! I have always wanted to try one, and I finally got to!!! YAY!!!! Anyway, I put 2 loads in and started them up... Uh oh, machine number 2 isn't tumbling... wow it's not spinning either, well, this is a pain in the ass. (THEY COST $2.25 EACH!!!!!) And, well how nice, there is no on duty attendant at this laundromat!!! OK, let's see, I guess I'll have to put it in machine number 1, (which was running beautifully I might add.) So other than that and the fact that there is no window, THEY ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!

Checkrate/Likes Kewl! There are commercial Neptunes at one of two laundromats here (the same one w/the old-style Helical Drive 'Tags), however I would NEVER risk contaminating any of my clothes or sheets in them...they have the typical mold problem and I usually leave the doors open to "air them out", so to speak. Still, they would be interesting to try with some old clothes I guess...and I wonder what kind of effect a window would have on the mold problem that's plagued nearly every machine?? Wow, $2.25 for a standard-size washer is a little much, IMHO. The TLs and Neptunes here are $1.25, the Dexter double-loaders and Wascomat triple-loaders are $2.00, and the Huebsch triple-loaders are $2.50. --Austin

Checkrate/Likes They charged $2.50 for the Neptunes at the laundromat at the Embassy Suites I visited near Disney World. The washers worked great, but the dryers, after 50 minutes of operation hardly removed any dampness from the clothes. One of the things I was thinking of though with the mold issue on commercial machines however is the fact that the machines get used much more frequently than a home machine. I would think that the machines would not have much "down time" to allow the mold to proliferate.

Checkrate/Likes *Dispenser Drawer* To avoid mold problems in front-loaders, also remember to leave the dispenser drawer (or lid in the case of a Neptune)open when not in use.
