Hi guys.

Just a quick thread to show you what has been going on as far as mine and robs machines are concerned.

Firstly - the Hotpoint Liberator 1826.

Apologies if you were clicking here, expecting news that a GEC derived machine has been acquired. Unfortunately not yet, but we all live in hope that one will turn up eventually.

No......its just an update on the Zanussi derived machine, in the form of the 1826.

A few months ago, she underwent bearings replacement, with the following results.

Piccy below shows the saviour of many a vintage machine - Mathew (keymatic3203) - hard at work with rob, disassembling the back of the 1826...

Brilliant Paul, the satisfaction of replacing knackerd bearings cannot be described, i love studying the old ones....dip them in white spirit and have a good look at them .

But fitting the new ones is even better, peace of mind follows.........and when your doing it to a classic machine its even better!

Lovely fots Paul

Thanks

Ps the ice box works :-)

Machine number 2

A one picture reveal of another recent machine.

This time its a timeline Hotpoint 15790 Super De Luxe.
Due to the hassles involved with moving top loaders, I am afraid that there wont be any updates soon for this machine. Mechanically restored it, like all our machines, awaits a day when they can be moved to a more permanent home.

Hi Lee and Louis.

Glad you like the pics and the machines and thanks for commenting.

Even though it isnt a GEC machine, as you say Lee, its nice to see the name 'Liberator' on a front loading automatic again. Fingers crossed that someone will find a GEC Liberator one day.

Its a shame that we cant get the 15790 out to play - they are a pain to move, if you havent got a van. One day i will get a film of that timeline ticking across.

cheers guys

and too the back. will we need a new backplate?!!! as you will be able to see from the right hand side of the chassis, in this picture, this machine has had one hell of a long term leak.
It will be resprayed in the fullness of time, to undo the work of the leak...

lid back on....

and the machine gets to look like the more usual round door electron....sans its chrome door trim!

This was removed due to it being far too beaten up to be restorable. it was covered in small dings and stains.

It was only removed however due to the kind offer of a new replacement! thanks mate.

unfortunately the old glue...sorry cement...used to attach it is a bitch to get off. it will have to be gently broken off in bits, before we can apply the new door trim.....

the only blemish on the facia is the small white streak of something on the powder drawer facia. dont know what it is and havent been brave enough to apply anything to try and get it off. i dont want to do any damage, as the facia has come up an absolute treat. think i might leave the blemish rather than run the risk of damaging it myself....

Awesome Electron Paul!

My grandmother bought one of these machines second hand when her Servis SupaTwin died and was sent into the shed for me to play with.

It was a slightly different colour, more a lighter grey colour. It also had a delay start dial, slightly smaller just next to the programmer. We never used the powder drawer button. The drawer was just as easily opened by pulling on the bottom (grandma had long nails so was easy enough for her). Oh the memories. It never had a chrome strip around the door, this was lost by its previous owner so its weird seeing one with it attached, the pic with it removed is much more familiar to me.

Hope this one lasts a while :-) i think it was the timer that went on grans in the end, coz we had to move it along manually to each stage :-)

Hi Matthew.

sounds like your gran had an electricity board special version of the round door electron.

as your memories tell you, it would have had a smaller delay hours dial, to the left of the main programmer dial, so that the owner could delay the start of the machine till later evening or overnight. taking advantage of the 'economy 7' electricity.

glad it has jogged the memories for you.

me and rob are really pleased with how the machine turned out.
once mechanical restoration is carried out on it, i am sure it will be a fine machine.

you mention the powder button. i was really surprised by this as, on this machine, it actually works! generally they seized up or simply broke.
as you say, you could get round it simply by grabbing the underneath of the facia. happen a good job, judging by the reliability of this particular piece of style over substance.
would have caused hoover many a headache were there no other way to open the drawer.

cheers
paul

second VIDEO!

here the machine performs its 800rpm spin.

the motor bearings need work doing to them, which will be dealt with when it reaches its turn in the restoration queue - there are so many in that queue now, its geting a bit mad.

Also, all the wobbling as it comes down from spin is due to being on very uneven ground at the back of mikes house. Also, I feel it will need a new suspension arm on the left - thats the side affected by rust from the leak....

Hi Lee.

Shame that the 95622 is having the old bearing issues. She is a real beaut of a machine - especially fond of the almond machines, after living with a 95452 for just shy of 20 years.

anyways - pics of bearings on hotpoint 95's....

all i can think of is the thread i started when we first dealt with our 95620. There are some pictures there that should give you an idea of what to do.

of course, any questions or advice required - just drop a line to any of us and we will be pleased to help.

regards
paul
p.s our 95620 is now a 95620! if you look, we had to fit a 95622 facia to it, as it was the only suitable one to hand. Came up trumps a month back and it now is fitted with this....

Not as detailed as that for the 95620, but may be of some use.

Really will have to get the 9560 powered up before the end of the year. If only to get rid of one of the motors which we have been kicking around various storage unit floors for months and months and months and.....

Some bits of advice adding new bearings to a 95 series...

From the 95620 and 9560 Masterclasses which took place in Cardiff...

a) on taking to pieces, beware of brittle facia - any rough handling will produce a crack!

b) on taking to pieces, beware all removable metal parts on the backs of hotpoints - they are like razor blades and will slice nice and deep into any flesh applied to them without care and attention.

3) you will need someone to trap the drum pulley and hold it still, whilst you unlock the drum from it.

iv) put new bearings into freezer to get them nice and cold. Shrinks them slightly.

5) apply gentle, NON-OUTER TUB MELTING, heat to the hole the bearing go into. this could make it microscopically a bit bigger and easier to get the chilled and slightly shrunken new bearings into.

hmmmmmmm......anything else? mmmmmmm. Mathew? Rob? Anyone?

Well Paul excellent job on the Hoover 800, a very smart looking piece of Hoover History..........its very nice......now if Mike will release it from his wharehouse you will find it a peice of pi.s to service up.

The same for the Hotpoints very smart machines.

Now where the bloody hell is ROB ?????? is he lost inside a Hotpoint time line???????? have you packed him away in a storage unit by accident? or has he moved in to a storage unit and refusing to leave as he cant have all favourite machines about him

Thanks Paul for posting these excellent pictures and videos

Im here along with a voice like Lieutenant Pigeon's

Wish I was living at storage LOL.
Would have bene around more had I not got a stinking cold.
Done myself worse by going into work instead of staying off.

Over the worst of it now but still feel rough and looking rough.

1 day until the weekend thank god, weekend will be spent dust busting this place. Something in this house is making me cough. Will be getting that Duvet washed along with the curtains, mats and maybe even a good old carpet vaxing.

Cue the Hoover Turbomaster........

Just so glad no machines require immediate attention. I hope I aint spoken too soon though,

Im sure Im teaching you to suck eggs but it was very common for these to leak on the left hand side of the tub, the dispenser to tub fill hoses dont seal very well.

Normally a good clean up and sealant will solve the problem, still got a couple of these fill hoses in the shed.
Never gona use em now though!

For fear of instilling the wrath of the God's of Merthyr

Dare I say I actually think those round door machines look nicer without the door trim (providing the adhesive is 100% removed.)

Have always thought that chrome strip of them never looked quite "right".

Beautiful machine though, with or without the chrome, and those Hotpoints as well, all in one thread! *swoons* =)

Matchboxpaul... You have some very nice, well built machines there. I only wish that I either lived over there(UK), or those type of well-built FL's were in the US. When you took the bearing assembly off the drum, what did you do or use to put the new bearings into the assembly? Someone else mentioned putting the bearings in the freezer to shrink them. How long should they be in the freezer?
