I heard about boiling your wash before and this would probably be as close as one could get to illustrate that without being scolded. My first encounter with a Kelvinator was at a home down the road from my g'mother's house at the Smith's. A strict German family that raised boxers, I was going to the woods and one of their dog's,Princess knocked me over into the mud and started licking me all over.Ms Olga, her owner took the liberty to throw my t shirt full of mudscrapes into her Kelvinator with whites she was already washing.it was summer time and she let me watch through the window lid as the agitator looked like it would never stop.Like the first experience at my Aunt Maggie's house watching the Frigidaire live water action,my eye cotact was locked on watching this cool machine get out the mud in my t shirt. When I went back to my g'mom's,she was wondering how I had mud everywhere but on my shirt.I kept it seceret thinking she'd get ticked off at Ms.Smith for going out of her way.Nana was like that.

That had to be

a major complaint of people who owned this machine, especially if you had young children around.

What is the story with the kelvinator, what is the design, when were they sourced, etc. I love the kelvies!

That is probably my favorite machine in your collection. What happened to the panel light?

The Kelvies were made by ABC-o-matic up until Kelvinator bought ABC. Don't know the dates though

I don't know which I love more--the floor-washer, or the thought that there'd be someone in the house to run it. You're a lucky guy, Robert! ;-)

I'm amazed the water doesn't splash past the outer tub and onto the floor. What's keeping that from happening?

Eugene, like all solid tub washers, the outer tub is sealed at the top otherwise when the water is thrown out of the top of the spinning tub it would go everywhere!

I have to ask

Does Fred get to play with the prized washers

I ask because he knows how to operate vintage vacuums
so operating washers would be simple

Yup Fred gets to use the washers too. I'm a very lucky guy to have a partner who understands not only that you have to handle these rare machines very gently and carefully but why its important to be careful. Just as I use his rare vacuums in the same gentle manner.

These older machines certainly don't appear to be very forgiving of errors. I am reasonably sure that the wrong broken part can mean "we're all done", resulting in a 200 pound night stand. At least, until something can be fabricated to bring it back to working condition. I wouldn't want to run any LCB through these, and I like to keep my cabinets as dry and clean as possible. That reminds me: my belt-drive Whirlpool portable hasn't been exercised in a few months, so perhaps I should give it a run to flush it out!

It seems to me like the Unimatics, Rollermatics, Pulsamatics, 1-18's and the like have always been a guy's washer. Whirlpool must have caught a larger market share because their products appealed more to women. And back then, it was always the housewife who did the laundry. Go figure.

Perhaps it would have helped Frigidaire if they were sold to someone like Harley Davison instead of WCI. Then, maybe they could have stood a better chance had they taken advantage of the trend towards men sharing more of the household chores. It sure would have been fun reading an advertisement with a bunch of bikers and their Hogs watching and enjoying a 1-18's "thump thump thump" like they did their Harley's "potato potato potato"!
