Nice

Looks nice! I own 2 LG front load washers and a LG dryer - love them. It's as close as I'm going to get to the incredibly overpriced Miele washer / dryer here in the USA.

Large Capacity Machines

Hi Guys.

On sat we went into Comet to buy a new pc. So I decided to look at the new design of machines out. Looked at the LG 11kg machine, and looks good, but price range was £899.99

The new Hoover Dynamic, that takes a 10kg load also looked great, but for £649.99, I would prefer to buy a Miele, as they built to last.

I also liked the Samsung 9kg model, yet again £699.99.

Siemens looked great, model WM16S79cgb. Yet again it was £949.99.

If I was choosing a new machine, but deffo save up for a Miele.

Paul

Honestly, who has 50 and more shirts to be washed in one day? And what about the 20 single sheets?
Plus I would never cramp that much a washing machine while doing shirts as then, you won't be able to iron them at all!
I still think that a 5 kg washing machine is more than adequate for a family of 4 or 5 people! And of those 5 kg most of the times only 3 or 4 are used!

Exactly..!!!

You might do one large wash of darks, jeans, coats, fleeces etc all bunged in together...BUT the rest of the time these machines will be seriously underloaded resulting in unbalanced loads....30 mins balancing and then not spinning!!! or spinning with such imbalances that will trash the machines...

New Machines

Hi Guys.

Looking at these machines, there is no way I wouls pay £649 for a Hoover washer. I looked around Comet this weekend, yes, they look so cool with fancy controls.

If I was spending so much, then I would buy a Miele.

Does anyone know about Siemans washers.

Paul

LG? Samsung? All badged as Hoovers? Or Hotpoints? If I buy a European front loader, I'm gonna want the real McCoy rather than something re-badged from Korea. I guess the old Italian Zerowatt spoiled me. Let us pray that Miele and Asko don't go that route.

Hoover are made by Candy

and Hotpoint are made by Indesit. All the old European names are still made in Europe (Italy mostly) but a lot of them have been swallowed up by other companies (Indesit group, Candy Group, BSH and Electrolux being the main players)

Problem is once great brands like Hoover, Hotpoint and AEG are now just names slapped on products which bear no resembelance to their former glory. They are now low end brands (AEG being the exception) and they have all suffered from a massive decrease in quality, reliability and durability.

Even the flagship brands for these companies, such as Indesit, Ariston and Candy are now shadows of their former selves, build quality has dropped, quite dramatically in most cases, across the board (Miele being the exception).

I would personally rate machines such as LG and Samsung above brands like Hoover, Hotpoint, Beko, or their equivalents. The only problem is the Korean machines tend to be extremely overpriced for what they are, mainly because of all the r&d that goes into their wacky features like the "silver nano" wash and "steam" functions. They also have higher percieved value by the average consumer because of their modern, "stylish" looks and the fact they have all the bells and whistles under the sun.

These machines which fit in a standard size cabinet and claim to be able to hold 9 or 10, even 11kg of washing have all seem to have drum volumes of roughly 75litres, that holds 7-8kg in my books, lol.

made in Italy ?

Hi Matt,
I mostly do agree with you ... or better, I'd like to.

I'm no more so sure about what is still made here in Italy.

-Zanussi-Electrolux moved some works in Eastern Europe.

-Candy Group has some plants in China and also rebadges something (e.g. chinese made countertop dishwashers)

- Whirlpool Europe has (had ?) their biggest european plant in northern italy (ex IGNIS factories), close to the swiss border. Latest washers don't seem sourced from here yet

For sure the Aqualtis and the Moon are still made in Italy.
Some weeks ago I posted a link to a vid taken from RAI3 TV news showing Merloni's works in Comunanza

".....Indesit, Ariston and Candy are now shadows of their former selves, build quality has dropped......."
Matt, to be honest I'd say Candy has always had nice ideas, but poor build quality (with some rare exceptions)

Has anyone seen the Affinity in Europe ?

Just about big washers.... Electrolux here sells the Affinity with the Rex-Electrolux badge instead of the Frigidaire one.

Here it is in Euronics' website ... but not present in their stores (or any other ones)

My bad

I'm still thinking of a few years ago, most machines I've seen/owned in recent years have been Italian made. I knew some production had moved to eastern Europe, but I didn't realise just how much. I didn't know Candy had moved some production to China either!

Bosch have a factory in Thailand as do Electrolux.....

...and some Whirlpool washers for our market come from China as does Miele's basic vacuum cleaner...

Bertrum....

Siemens are the expensive end of Bosch, so quality should be somewhere between Bosch & Miele. Generally v good i think. Think the range is quite small that is sold in the UK though.

As for these huge capacity washers, i think its abit pointless going over 7 or 8 kilos in a domestic environment. As has already been said, theyll spend most of their life half full and will shake themselves to bits. Plus the motors rarely seem up to moving 8 or 9kgs in the new machines, so God knows what sorta mess these bigger machines will get into.

I think some manufacturers need to get the basics like the motor working properly before fitting a launderette size drum.

B.S.H. and the power of marketing

Hi Liam,

Siemens washers look a bit more smart than Bosch ones, but they are just the same machines (so same built quality) with different "dresses".
Different "dresses" allow different pricing for the same product. B.S.H. marketing office has nice "taylors" who did a great job. Compare these websites :

www.bosch-home.co.uk...

www.siemens-home.co.uk...

www.neff.co.uk...

www.gaggenau.co.uk...

Ok, Neff and Gaggenau sell only built-in appliances.
So pick up from each of these sites the same products (e.g. four full integrated dishwashers with identical features).
I bet that if Bosch price is X , Siemens price is 5-10 % more, Neff price is 10-15 % more and the Gaggenau price is 15-20 % more.

Whirlpool Europe has even done better.
Compare www.whirlpool.co.uk... and www.kitchenaid.co.uk... :
they have hidden some whirlpool crap between real KA utensils and mixers.

Spot on about the Siemens machines, technically identical to Bosch and Neff.
The fact is Badging up fools the general public.

Speaking of Siemans

Do their machines put on a very good show? I reflect a lot on this old Zerowatt I have, and it reminds me of a 1/4 scale Wascomat. I would like these new front loaders better IF they had the ability to ramp up to a full spin without spending the next half hour trying to determine whether or not they would balance properly. Not that there's anything wrong with saving water, but I just can't seem to gain much pleasure watching what essentially operates like a dry cleaner, when that pretty candy-apple Epic uses what seems like a teaspoon of water during its rinse. I can't even feel the heat on the front door because of the insulation. If it even heats the water.

I am a hobbyist by nature, and perhaps others here are as well. I fly glow-powered RC planes, some of which are scale and others are designed specifically as RC. For a new machine, I would want something that reflects on my interests. That is, something that I can get the pleasure of watching while it's in action, the way I do my planes when they carve up the sky. But these new gadgets just don't seem to have it for some reason. They would be more like sticking an electric motor on a gas-powered Spitfire and calling it good. It flies, yes. And it's "good for the environment". But it has no drama and very little interaction, except for the time it takes to charge up a LiPo battery which can be about as much fun as watching paint dry. At least, that would seem to be my thoughts on the LG if it were in my collection.

The wind has been literally knocked out of my sails with what these manufacturers now offer.

None the less: I really do understand the importance of a clean household. I am sure these machines are that way by necessity. The average person will put the new LG in a closet, hidden from site like the water heater. And obviously, they'll expect it to be as quiet as a church mouse while doing its job, site unseen. only to be discarded like a used napkin when a repair is no longer feasible. It's sad, but I guess that's what the majority wants.
