Finally. A fabulous Craigslist find in the town next to mine. Paid for, now I just have to find a pickup truck...

Photos as soon as I get it home, but of course I couldn't wait:

Congratulations! I always liked those dryers although I've heard from people who have owned them that they had rather lame blowers for the size of the machine.

It will be interesting to hear what you have to say about them once you have had a chance to put yours through it's paces. Are you doing gax or electric?

Yeah, I've heard lots of negatives for these big boys

bajaespuma's profile picture
I would have rathered gas, but this one's electric. Interesting that you brought up the blower issue as I was going to start a thread asking whose dryer has the most powerful airflow as, to me, that would be the most important factor in drying speed along with temperature. This model has an unusual "Sanitize" feature that I would expect it to run hotter. We'll see. With any luck I'll be using it before the weekend. I've always wanted one of these.

Will work for food.

Let me know if you need an electric line (or say two) run.

CONGRATS!

As I mentioned in another thread...

the larger dryer uses the same blower as the standard size model.

The sanitize feature allows the temperature to rise after the clothes are dry, sort of to the safety hi-limit thermostat setting which is, of course, going to give the load the over-dried and baked feel.

A modern, high air-flow dryer would need a lot higher wattage heating element to hold the clothes at sanitizing temperatures while they were drying and rapid evaporation is lowering the air and fabric temperatures. The old, low air-flow dryers like Hamiltons and pre-57 GEs, Filtrators and many condensor combos could hold the load at high temperatures while damp. The 37,500 BTU modulating burner I transplanted into an early 90s KitchenAid will bring the exhaust temperature to 165F in less than 10 minutes and holds it there until the load is done, but I don't know about the sanitizing properties of that heat. It would seem that if live microbes were present, they would be more vulnerable to heat when they are damp since they can encyst when they dry out which enables them to survive harsh conditions; most important, "sanitize" is not the same as "sterilize."

Yes, the Big Mouth dryer is prone to leaving a nice deposit of fuzz in the narrow space between the deep door plug and the drum opening when large, linty loads are dried, but WH dryers from the redesign to flat fronts and GEs under the right conditions would do that also. It has a lot to do with the hot, steamy air hitting the cooler metal on the way to the lint screen. Large loads make both more steam and lint.

Every time a GE's control panel lights up, an angel gets its wings.

He'll need a lot of THC. First thing is to remove that repulsive Sandy Boynton sticker. The back is a bit of a mess and I don't believe the vent is attached on the inside (or the blower is truly beyond lame), but...

... what we have here is bona fide GE "Green Dot" quality!

Will be doing a maiden dry in Big Boy tonight or tomorrow AM and will give my two cents on performance.

Had a huge fight with my Mother in 1973 when we had an opportunity to purchase this very model. Mary McCheapseats decided to save 10 bucks and went with the standard-sized GE dryer (which, I'm happy to say, was one of the best and fastest dryers and is still in operation today). Actually, the GE dealer steered us away from the Big Boy because he had had many complaints about performance. We'll see. What a joy to find and get a dream machine. And it's Harvest Gold! Not harvest wheat.

I forgot about the 'chin' that's on the inside door for the sensor. This looks like it'll clean up pretty nicely. Love the green 'Allied Van Lines' sticker on the back. I don't remember seeing too many really older laundry machines with out at least one mover's sticker. LOL! Did this come with the terminal block and lower rear access covers?

Could it have been GE that came out with a range that had the P-7 Self Cleaning oven below and a Eye Level Oven with a glass door ? Just seeing "Americana" brought that memory back in my mind.

Beautiful Dryer Ken. It is amazing how every so often something will pop up close to you. Good Luck with your Dryer. She's a beauty.

Thanks everybody

My recollection is that starting in 1973, all GE TOL's in every line were badged "Americana" but I think you're right, it started with the TOL Hi-Lo range, which was a wonderful stove if you were more into baking than stove-top cooking.

I may have mentioned this before, but in the seventies, GE had an office on East 42nd Street in NYC, right across from the Daily News building. In that office, now hold onto yourselves girls, there was a huge room with EVERY SINGLE APPLIANCE MODEL FOR THAT YEAR. This was when I first saw a 24" wide Filter-flo.I was only about 14 at the time, and very self-conscious about my appliance fetish, but I must have visited that room about 3 times. Whirlpool had a similar set up on West 59th Street, next to the Hudson River.

I still have dreams that I discover a warehouse(guarded by Eddie McClintock)filled with every GE appliance ever made NIB. I just have to turn a hose on myself when I wake up. I wonder how Mrs. Freud washed the doctor's clothes?

...and by the way, when I first opened the dryer's door, there was a huge lint cake right where you said it would be. Am I right in that the lint filter doesn't come out for cleaning???

Looks like a somewhat familiar beast! Congrats on getting your dream-dryer home. Hopefully the dream-state will persist long into that first Automatic Dry cycle ;-) For big loads, I set mine more toward "Heavy" rather than the deceptive "Normal" points on the dial. Your review will be very interesting to see.
I remember hearing that the very first of these gas models had burners with ratings approaching 30,000 BTU. The blower question aside, I'll bet that was a decent dryer.

Well,

bajaespuma's profile picture
first hitch: the blower isn't working at all. Will have to go spelunking tonight to see whassup. Oh dear, will my Big Boy be a Bust? Will dozens of didies remain damp? Am I to remain all wet?

I really do have to go to work now.

(Maytag top-loading dishwasher arrives on Sunday and I have NOTHING to wear!)
