As I've said: I love the haulaway pile at the shop. Today was kinda special. Find #1 was neat enough. Find #2 will knock your socks off! (Tease, tease...) Find #2 may end up going to one of you lucky people but more on that later...

Find#1

A Kenmore washer. Wouldn't spin was the complaint. What ever could be wrong... O.K., all you Whirlpool/Kenmore guys, say it together with me: "Broken wire at the wigwag..."

Model 82372120
Serial C61373573

Close up of the console. Lots of neat features. Gordon seems to like this one.

Money shot... Yes, it has the fabric softener on top of the dual action agitator. Really clean inside.

Does it wash?

After repairing the red wire at the wigwag and freeing the stuck rear leveling legs, I took it for a spin. Really loaded it down with towels, too. Nice and quiet.

Now the magic question: Will it spin?

redcarpetdrew's profile picture
Yup! Here it is at full speed. Repairing this really brought back my belt drive service days. I was lucky in that the tub has no leaks. Spin sounds good and got right up to speed. I have a friend this will go to. He'll take care of it. Find #2 is to come... HeHe!

Little premature aren't we? You told me in a previous email that this was a machine you were really on the hunt for... I'll answer that email. I kinda had you in mind for this one but if you don't want it... ;-)

Andy - LOL! "Gordon seems to like this one"????? LOL Whatever gave you that idea? Was it my three back to back e-mails about it maybe?

This series of machine DOES carry some weight with me, and for several reasons. The 1983 line was the last full-line introduction of belt-drives, as they remained in production, most of them anyway, until Fall 1986. There were 10 29-inch large cap. models that year. I think there was also a 24-inch model or two, but by then the 24-inch machines had largely defected to DD.

This was THE best selling model in the 1983 line. Why? I don't know because I find the three water levels to be a pain in the a$$ when for the same money, a five-level switch or an infinite switch could have been used (those were the next two models up).

The other reason I like these so much is because I was fortunate enough at the young age of 21 to buy myself a set of these new, though I got the entry level 70 without the soak cycle or the bleach dispenser. That was a FUN adventure for a life-long washer guy. Buying one nearly just like what my mom had.

I wasn't aware that anyone on this site would be searching for a machine like this. Sounds like someone got their dream machine though, and that's fantastic. If there is anyone else who would like a model like this, I have an almond machine identical to this which looks cosmetically at least as nice, AND two step-up models with five water levels. I also have a two-steps up machine with infinite water levels. All four are almond and would need my (or someone's) attention before being put into service.

It didn't take long, either. I'll let the lucky owner brag a little if he wants. The best thing is that this knocks an item off his wishlist! My request will be that he has to post two pictures. One of her in place and one of her washing!

These were the type of Kenmore machines I remember at friends' and family's houses when growing up. They seemed to fill rather quickly, did a competent job of washing clothes, and lasted forever. And, oh, how I miss the "woo-woo" sound and the four or five spray rinses during each spin. I wish I could've found one similar to this or a Whirlpool from the same era to replace the new piece-of-crap Kenmore that I just got rid of for parts....

I still see those on a somewhat regular basis on the trade piles I frequent. Must have been quite popular!

Used one of those in a double house I lived in

Moved in with my Norge 20 and the dryer matching your find. The guy in the other flat had a bad dryer, and my Norge was one it's last legs, the cabinet loose from moving, and there was hookup available for only one washer. He said. "Let's use my washer and your dryer, so we made a matched set,,,,and my God, I finally lived with a real Kenmore. Sure it had the new agi, but it's full long stroke, and it's belt-driven. A wonderful washing machine, and 20 years later, still goin' strong on Columbia Pkwy. And it's a faster spin than the old BD's. Wonder how and when KM did that.

Thanks so much, Drew for sharing your loot.
