I was so excited to see a Maytag LA408 at an auction along with a matching dryer (almond colour). I bought the set because I have an old Maytag A208 which looks very similar and has worked hard for us here at our dairyfarm for many years - and you can imagine how many loads of very dirty clothes it has washed in over 30 years! Anyway, the model LA408 is slightly different. It looks like a "deluxe" model because it has a permanent press wash button. My husband hooked everything up where my old Maytag was (I am keeping since it still works but looks a little worn). BUT, the hot water won't come on - cold works well. And yes, the hot water is connected, the hose is clear, and the hot water tap is open. Any help would be appreciated. I am hesitant to call a service man because I'm so sure it must be something very simple.

Hello Joybell and WELCOME to AW.org!

There are a large group of friendly and helpful people here, so don't be shy, come back often!

Personally I think it may be the water inlet valve. I recently picked up a Maytag A806 washer (top of the line with a lighted control panel) and when I connected it after getting it home, it did the exact same thing as yours.

First turn off the water, take off the hoses and make sure the little screens in the inlet valve (where the hoses connect) are not clogged with dirt, rust or other crud. Double check the wires connected to it, make sure they are not corroded. If they look to be clean, the solenoid for the "HOT" side is probably no good.

I would suggest buying a replacement water lnlet valve from an appliance parts store which sells Maytag parts, then you or your husband replace it. It's easy enough to do.

If you have any trouble or other questions, just post it here.

Good luck!
Kevin

May just need a new water inlet valve. Pretty cheap and easy repair. Call your local parts house with the model number for a price. Pay attention to how you UN-install the old one and just reverse the proceedure with the new one.

Thanks, we'll have a look tomorrow. One odd thing is that there were no screens on the inlet valves. My husband had to take the screens off my old A208 and put them on. Could not having these screens on have caused some damage to the solenoid valve while the previous owner had the machine? The water is very hard in our area. I have a softener but many people don't.

Yes, that may very well be the problem. Without screens all kinds of debris could get in and clog up that valve.

Can't see a problem so we have to replace the water inlet valve. I have checked prices on the internet and they vary $26 - $35. I want to get the right part - but it looks like one of them (the cheaper one) is blue plastic. I don't know what the more expensive one looks like but the part number for that one is 205613. I would like to have a part that is the same quality as the original one (can't believe it would be plastic!) - so how do I find out what that would be? Thanks for all of your help!

Welcome To The Group Joybell!

I replaced the inlet valve on my Maytag 806 it was quick and simple I bought my valve off of eBay for $14.95 and free shipping, but it was not a genuine Maytag part. I going to buy a genuine Maytag valve to have as a spare.

Can you still get a genuine Maytag part for such an old machine?

Yes, if you do a eBay search for the valve part number, you should be able to find them. Also any Maytag dealer should have them as well. My 806 is from the 70's and I have been able to find genuine Maytag belts for it.

Maytag used this particular valve for several decades. It was used from 1966 through at least the mid 90's, if not longer. Part # is 205613

I went ahead and got a part locally (The Horton Company 525 valve - replaces CW151) which fits and works. But maybe I should bid on that Maytag part so I have a spare. Thanks all, I am busy doing laundry tonight and everything is humming along and working well so far. Washing machine dial does have some quirky little squeaks once in a while though! I do have a question about the matching dryer but I put that on a separate post.
Thanks again!

Here are two photos of my "new" Maytags! They were taken by the auctioneer at the auction hall. Not a scratch on them - they look like new. And they are both VERY quiet.

Oooops: I think I can only post one photo at a time? Here is the other photo showing the set.

Can you help me identify my Maytag Washer please?

Any quirks or facts are appreciated.

A107 or A108

Lift the lid and the placard should be at the right rear corner of the opening.
