Malcolm I have a new 1974 Maytag A107.....and sometimes it depends on the load the tub will index, other times locked tight in place, seems the brake doesn't always lock tight from the spin, I used to think it was with older machines where they are wearing out, but having a "new" one do it, somewhat seems normal for every now and then to see it index....normally you would never see this cause the machine only operates with the lid closed, actually I noticed it with the front cover off and I seen the tranny moving during agitation, I wouldn't worry about it unless its doing it on every load, even with an empty tub....then you may consider replacing the brakes.... |

The internal 200lb. spring is getting weak. It won't harm the machine in anyway, but when the tub starts to index heavily, it will hamper rollover. Maytag used the same brake package from 1956-2006 so parts aren't hard to find now and shouldn't be too hard to find in the near future, if you want to hold out on replacing it for now.

"Should I automatically replace the brake system package because of the higher agitating and spinning speed that will cause extra indexing?" Yeah, it would be a good idea to do so. "Qsd-dan, is it possible to have replaced and install an internal brake spring that's MORE than 200lbs?" I'll have to take a look at some microfiche slides and see if there was a commercial brake package available. I kinda doubt that one ever existed though. |
