Sounds like a timer issue. There are more people here who can give you a better idea, but I would look into a new timer. What is your washer's model number? Some Maytags from that era are very very good, but others have a frightful reputation for colossal leaks. If it's a bad one, it would likely be good to get rid of it before the main seal fails. If it's a good one, fix it and keep it for ever. I hope you have a good one, Dave |

Thanks. My machine is a Maytag Ensignia, oversize capacity plus. The model number is MAV645/AWW. Where can I get a new timer? Can I replace it by myself? |

I don't know where your washer falls in the good or bad category. Be glad it's not an SAV series (they were aweful). A timer replacement can be a do-it-yourself job. First, go to a place like www.repairclinic.com..., enter your model number, and find the timer. It will give you a part number for the timer and if it has been updated and there is a different timer available, it will tell you. This will also give you a price. You can use the part number to look on ebay or you can call your local appliance parts stores and get some prices from them. Good luck, Dave |

About 2 months ago a coworker of mine approached me and asked "You work on washing machines, don't you?" I told her that I can depending on the problem. She explained that her washer (a 2 year old, Maytag badged Whirlpool, don't remember the model#) either would not fill OR would overflow (randomly, fortunately the washer is located in the garage). After checking with a washer friend, we came to the conclusion it was the water level switch. I bought a new one and installed it. So for $30 (my good guy price) it's repaired and working just fine. |
