Fascinated by spray rinses in US TLs, was lookin for something similar in FLs

Just spotted this vid made by one of the german forum moderators. This washer is 11 or 12 year old but it's very interesting : unlike today (unique difference is the badge, check Duet thread) this Bauknecht is very different from the same aged euro made Whirlies. These are the last Bauknecht badged machines we have seen here in IT. However the stacked dryer is just the same as whirlpool ones

During the interim spin after the 1st rinse the machine starts filling and water from the drawer goes straight on the spinning load. Then the pump and the spin stop while it keeps on filling for the 2nd rinse. ( since 6:28 >> ). I wish even recent flush-on-door Mieles made such a move :-p

Note the difference that makes the short option when engaged : 68 mins vs 118 mins for a warm (40°C) cotton cycle.

The scary noises are made by the Siwamat. This 25 y.o. Siemens toploader was very popular here also badged as Constructa or Bosch

Hi Favorit,

My W 423 Miele does the same except I think its between the 3rd and 4th rinse.

The Spray starts and then the motor cuts out and it continues to spray as it slows down.

It has such a large sump area I've assumed that at least some of the soap and scum ends up in the sump and stays there during the rinse.

W423 - where's the spray jet ?

Hi Nathan,
here is the vid of the W423 (Dutch version, so maybe it is different than yours ) . Since 8:20 there's the spin after the 3rd rinse .... i can't see any jet and any spray. The rinses look close the same of my W780 ones. What's different in your one ?

Ciao
Carlo

Hi Carlo,

It fills through the wash compartment in the dispenser which enters the tub at the 11o'clock position at the front edge.

There isnt the same gush of water, but in person there is some spraying in round the door and boot and over the outside of the tub.

My W1986 begins filling as soon as the spinning starts slowing at the start of the last rinse. Since the machine is filling through the softener dispenser, I figured it was a way of ensuring that the softener was well mixed in the water by the turbulance of the spinning drum striking the water as it gains depth in the outer tub, eliminating the likelihood of blobs of softener staining the clothing. This would be especially important in cold water.

Spray rinsing during spins is problematic in front loaders. You would have to use a low spin speed to avoid suds locking between the inner and outer tubs. With the efforts to conserve water, the sump area under the tub has decreased to almost nothing and the clearance between the inner and outer tubs has also shrunk. With the distance between the tubs being so tight, water being spun out of the load that usually would have hit the outer tub and drained down into the sump now is whipped around between the tubs forming a nice froth that in its aerated state does not even want to fall into the sump. This is why so many tumble-type machines now either ramp up to spin quite slowly or do a spin burst to spin out as much water as possible then stop all tub motion to allow the water to drain away. With most machines using the small pumps and the eco-float valves to seal the opening between the other tub and the hose to the pump, the tendency is for water to accumulate in the outer tub until it is of sufficient quantity to flow down into the pump rather than be sucked into the pump as it used to be in American washers when pumps were powered by the main motor and were more powerful. Also in the construction of the Bendix and Westinghouse washers, the powerful pump was not at the end of an air-filled passage so the water spun out of the load did not have to displace air on its way to the pump like in modern machines.

Balance and distribution issues also hamper spray spins in front loaders. Often the initial unbalanced start of a spin period is alleviated by the reduction in weight due to the loss of water as the spin progresses. Unless the load were well balanced, adding water to the fabrics would perpetuate an unbalanced spin, further hampering the draining away of the water as it sloshes around in the swinging tub, eventually tripping the pressure switch and bringing the whole exercise to a stop letting the load fall into the water that has just been sprayed through it.

Hello favorit I'am sorry to disappoint you but this is not a real spray rinse since the machine is not pumping out the water.
My father have a Bauknecht washer quite like this and it have also this feature. When the spin cycle is done the machine fills with water and it continue to spin slowly but with the pump off! It sure is a nice and good feature but it would be better if it were a real spay rinse.
