I bought an LG washer and dryer set the other day. I put a warranty on the washer for 5 years. Should buy a warranty for the dryer? I have thirty days to decide. I think the dryer does not need one, but one never knows. My last dryer lasted longer than two washers.

It's a waste, most dryers go bad or something minor will happen by the 10 year mark. Save your money!

When I lived in maryland,I had bought a Whirlpool gas dryer at Best Buy.after 16 months,the motor took a crap and would have cost over $200 to replace.I had to buy a new dryer.had I bought a $60 service plan,they would have replaced it for free.I moved to Florida and went to Sears to get a front loading stacked washer/dryer.After 2 years of daily use,the berrings went on the washer.I got a quote of almost $800 to get it repaired.Had I bought the service plan for $135,the repair would have been free.I think they're worth it. peace of mind can become a gem when you are in that kind of situation.In both cases,the service plans would have saved me from replacing the appliances instead of paying a fortune to have them repaired.

the old addage....better to have and not need than to need and not have.....extended warranties has saved me mega bucks....it even got me a few brand new replacement when they couldn't fix mine.......I believe its Lowes that sells the extended warranty, and if you never use it in the 5 years of coverage, your money is automaticaly refunded.....bet Sears won't do that!

I have 2 sets from different stores I have to go back to the files to remember which one refunds the money......but thats a big selling point......Sears is outrageous with the prices they charge for the warranty...not to mention when you get the extended, it cancels the manufacturers first year warranty, Lowes does not, their extended kicks in after the first year


If I was you I would go to Lowes, comparison shop to what you got, they will match prices from Sears, check out the warranty details and price.....and send the set from sears back!.....also keep in mind, from Lowes, if you buy the set, you ONLY pay one price for the warranty on BOTH.....I paid $140.00 for a five year coverage on a washer/dryer set ( the Calypso to be exact)...which ends up being 6 years total...

now for my Frigidaire FL set....I got from a local dealer...the extended started after the first year, and the price is $30.00 per year per set.....so I bought 9 years worth, to equal 10 years total.....think about it!

Check the terms of any extended warranty or service contract before committing. I bought a 3-year extended (added on to the manufacturer's 2-year) on a washer/dryer set in 2004. When the dryer developed a chattering/squeaking noise (which I know is the belt idler), I called the warranty service (Maytag Dependability Plus, although the machines in question are not Maytag) and they refused to do anything because the dryer wasn't "dead." The terms allowed service only if the appliance is non-functional. Noises didn't qualify, even if obviously indicating that something has worn. I had about 7 months left on the contract at the time and the squeaking stopped after a few weeks, but has started occasionally again after the warranty ran out. Interestingly, I didn't get a solicitation to renew ... not that I would have anyway. I've ordered the parts so as to have them on-hand and will fix it myself when the situation progresses to the need.

Not sure how much extended warranties cost in the US but here in the UK the prices are absurd and I would never ever take one out on anything. Consumer programmes warn against them here also. It depends where you buy stuff also. For example, I just bought a new TV from John Lewis this month and it came with a free 5 year guarantee. My parents bought a dishwasher from JL about 5 years ago and that had a free 5 year g/tee also. Most of the big stores like Currys and Comet don't offer anything like this. I never buy an appliance or home entertainment stuff from anywhere but JL unless completely unavoidable.

In that most EW are a total waste of money.

However given the rather poor quality and design of most major appliances these days, if it makes you feel more "secure", have at it.

Normally anything on any major appliance or electronic equipment that is going to break or malfunction will do so within the first year, which should be under warranty. But again, warranties have been getting shorter and shorter....

A dryer's motor going after only one or two years is just disgusting. More so that considering how much money one probably spent on the unit, now one would either be out of luck (without an EW), or have to pay major funds on top of the purchase (no warranty).

And yet persons and repairmen keep asking one why I hang on to "old" appliances.

I almost Didn't

get the Sears Maintainence Agreement or MA(as they call it if you are an employee)on my Dryer I bought in 2006. TOL elite eltronic. I thought my dryer of 10 years ran almost flawless beside an Idler pulley,rollers and igniter so I said na,Well the employee "score" at Sears depends on how many they sell in a day/week month and I was buying from a friend so I got it and was going to cancel it on day 31 so he wouldnt get hit but I forgot. Thank God i didnt cancel cause this dryer was a lemon from day 33, same with my FL washer, I got the MA but i wasnt foing to renew it on the 3rd year, I did and the control panel went and the door lock. Year 6 the rear bearing is on it way out. Point is better safe than sorry with TOL expensive stuff, but like the guys above said "read the fine print" and be sure you know what is covered. I paid 150 for each warranty and between the 2 machines it cost $450.00 to cover them and they have had 1100.00 in repairs saving me 650.00. When the bearing goes the will proby give me 800.00 credit to get a new washer.
However if i got the dial contol dryer or TL washer I prob.wouldnt get the warranty. Just my 30amps worth lol

Due to the electronic controls, I usually go for the extended warranty. The cost to replace a defectvie board is astronomical. And as we all know, relable and long-lived they are not.

I usually play hard-to-get with a purchase and when the salesperson won't come down on the price of the machine, we usually compromise by getting them to throw in the extended warranty "for free", sine it makes them look good to sell these things.

In Sears, the proceeds from "Maintenance Agreements" goes directly to the individual stores, not the repair centers. Management carefully watches what percentage each saleperson has of successful sales of same.

I would go with the extended warranty. Because of the electronics, it's not "your old dryer". Lightning (sp?) hit my modem and burned out our security system, so i am not sure if washer and dryer electronics are as likely to get damaged in a storm, it did not harm our TV, or microwave. alr2903

I guess what I have always tried to live by was instead of spending the money on the warranty, put it twards your washer/dryer and get a better one. I did one better when I bought a friend a gift of a dishwasher, I bought them a nice one with a MA from Sears. The Dishwasher is now three years old and was not working very well, they thought that it was shot, it was user error. It was clogged up with stuff that you thought that it would chew up in the disposer. That is a top of the line Kenmore dishwasher. Better Safe than Sorry anymore. I think that it cost about an extra 300 for five years. You just never know what can go wrong. When it comes time to use it, you will not be sorry you have it. Correct me if I am wrong, did the older appliances have longer waranties on them in the day? When my mom and I went out to look at new machines for her, the Speed Queen had a three year out of the barn.
