......i've got a neptune 4000. for a long time now, it SCREAMS during final spin. repairman said too expensive to fix, so i've just been using it until it dies. an old friend told me i should try to fix it myself...i'm not mechanical. should i ignore my friend?

HE front loaders are prone to bearing problems, and the Neptune is no exception. To get the bearing out of your 4000, you'll need to either rent, or purchase a $500.00 tool. Or, make your own bearing puller. Some club members know how to do this. But before you go that far, you will have to almost take the whole machine apart. Older Maytag top loaders made during the 1970's and 1980's are a lot simpler, and thus considerably easier to fix. They can be identified by their blue power-fin agitators. It's your call. Good luck.
