My cousin has an old BD whirlpool washer in storage that we just dragged out for her brother to use. It's been a while since I've seen it and it was dark when we moved it. It has the pull out plastic lint filter on the front right side of the tub, I assume it's a waterfall type, but it has the odd agitator I've seen mention of here from time to time with 3 large scallops at the base. Very odd looking. She bought it used for $40 8 or 10 years ago and it's been in storage for 2. Any idea of the age? I guess i could track down the model number at some point, but just was curious.

Any special tricks when putting a machine back into use when it's been in cold storage for years? It's been frozen a few times, but I didn't see any obvious issues when we laid it on it's side, don't think it was drained when it went into storage.

I had one with the wings on the bottom of the agitator, but it had an automatic filter. It was purchased in either 1983 or 1984.

Check the pump, if there was water in it and it froze it could have cracked the pump. It happened to our first Whirlpool we lost power during a winter storm and the water froze in the pump and cracked it.

The Double-Duty Surgilator was introduced on the LFA model line (1978) and was used on all 18-lb belt-drive machines from that point until their demise.

Yup! That's it...

I'm sure I have seen it before, I've worked on the machine, but it did not register. So, I'd guess it's circa 1980 or so. Or is it from '78 since it does not have the self cleaning filter.

Just curious, what it the LFA line?

LFA is the 1978 model year. Such as LFA7800W0. Syntax of
L = laundry
F = model year 1978
A = automatic washer
7800 = machine model
W = color
0 = engineering change

Here they are together...

That Double Duty is amazing with really big loads and even huge, bulky items like fat comforters, etc.

Double Duty Agitator Washer Video?

My family had a very similar WP washer that you have been discussing here, except the cabinet was almond colored. Is there a Youtube video out there (or could somebody post one) of this very Whirlpool washer series? The color doesn't matter, but the sounds of it would bring back memories of the washer we had purchased brand new back in 1983.--Laundry Shark
