Hey guys - This one needs to go ASAP - FREE. If I don't get someone to commit to this in the next week I'll throw it on CL. Located in Waterloo, IA. Mid 80's Whirlpool BD. Pretty good shape. My folks were using this for almost 2 years - they didn't have any issues with it. Large Capacity. Shoot me an email: benny59@mchsi.com Thanks! Ben |

I don't need it, but THANKS for the pics. That's the same model we had in the 1980s! I always thought SUPER SURGILATOR (sp?) was the coolest name. I see no fab dispenser, just like ours...had to use Downy ball. If I remember correctly, it was a "hat" type dispenser and was HUGE for the models that had a fab dispenser.

You're amazing. Listen, Buddy, I've only seen the Super Surge in action once, a long time age, washing a load of towels, and they seemed to be sloshing back and forth the way they would in one of the earlier Norge's. How would you describe the turnover/water currents produced by these bottom winged creatures? When you get a moment. Thanks, Mike |

I had a Whirlpool with the same agitator, and it had some fierce agitation action. It could handle large loads with ease. I wish I still had it. |

The wings were added to the top of the agitator and to bottom to improve turn over compared to previous LAA & LFA super cap models which used the same sugerlator that the ST CAP models did.The top fins added a little visible splash and the bottom wings greatly helped turnover starting with the LHA models in 1980.

I've always wanted to see the action of the winged SS too. I wish I could have saved my mom's 76 Whirlpool she had. If this site was around back then I would have. Oil was coming up from the bottom of the agitator and one day it just stopped working. All it would do when you turned it on was hum. The only other problem it had was the hot water wouldn't shut off. I came home one day to find the garage flooded. It went through an entire cycle with the hot water still running. The machine still worked even after that for a short while. You just had to turn off the hot water faucet after it was done filling. It didn't seem to fill as high as it used to and the agitation didn't seem as fast. All things that seem to be simple to repair I found out after joining this site. I miss that machine! And in case you're wondering, it was avocado green and had the fabric softener cap.

I always refer to this model as "The one" before the DD's. NO indents on the cabinet front, one of the last BD machines. |

will find a YouTube video of the SS in action. It would be a real treat to see the turnover. Seeing it only once, I now realize that the towels sloshing around were doing so because the user forgot to increase the water level after doing a lighter load, but that one image has haunted since, and thus fixed my under-estimation of its performance.

I'm pretty sure the Double-Duty Surgilator was introduced on the LFA series. Online parts diagrams show LFA7800, for example, having Double-Duty. LAA and LDA both do not. My family had an LDA7800 which had a "regular" Surgilator. Neighbors had an LFA7800 that did have a Double-Duty. LAA7800W4 Agitator LDA7800W3 Agitator LFA7800W0 Agitator |

I don't believe the wings at the bottom of the agitator are for the handwash setting as this agitator was available in machines that didn't have the handwash setting. Instead, the wings are to help direct the water currents back up towards the top of the wash basket. Not sure how effective they actually were over the regular super surgilator agitator, but they look kida cool. Malcolm |

It would have been cool to see it wash without the FSD. |

Great vid!! I love seeing these machines in action, haven't seen one for quite awhile. Ben, why don't you just keep this machine? I wish I was closer as I would love to have it. |

How much would it cost to ship this to East Coast? MA? I had one of these for 10 years and really miss it. I'd probably replace my frontloader with this? How much you asking for it? |

Oy. I had one of those on a Whirly and while I appreciated the convenience, I did not appreciate the lack of means with which to clean it. It snaps on in place of your original agitator cap and then won't come off easily. In addition, the design is such that you can't get into the softener chamber readily for cleaning. Big contrast to the idiot-simple Maytag design that lifts out for cleaning.

I ask Jason to find an SS video, and YOU find JASON'S flick. Wonderful ! The turnover sure is impressive. Whirly, welcome to the club, and thanks for the video. You'll fit right in here, marvelously. You do what they call a Bobload-- a really full tub of clothes or dishes, named in honor of our famous member Bob who invented seeing how much you could max out a load and still achieve effective cleaning. Understand, now why you all love the winged beauty. |
