Does anyone know who made this? I looks a bit like the old Hitachi machines. I've e-mailed the seller to see if it's still available.

Interesting!

I wonder if that may be an honest-to-goodness Hoover import! I don't recall the Hitachi machines having an agitator like this one does. Hope you can get there before the storm... LOL

Australian Made

If i'm not mistaken, that's an Australian made Hoover Premier....the mid size Hoover that was popular for many years here in Oz.

Cheers

Little Known Fact...

macboy91si's profile picture
Hoover not only made the little twin tub portables, but for a while made full size automatics. The dryer had a full front door almost. The portables and full size machines were made in North Canton, OH. This machine I believe is an import, but still a Hoover possibly. I've seen the same machine with the "Simpson" nameplate as well.

I thought the American Hoover full size automatics were rebadged Blackstones.

The Full size Hoovers in Australia were Blackstone Designs up until the early 80's, made here to the Blackstone design. These used the gearbox for agitator reciprocation.

The machine in this post was a dirivitive of what came after those. Initially only the Small/Medium machines used the motor reversing intermittently to agitate and the large machines kept the Blackstone gearbox, with lighter weight components.

By the late 80's however all Hoover machines made in Australia used the intermittently reversing motor to provide agitation.

That definitely looks like an Aussie made hoover.

My Aunt has that exact machine over here in Oz. I have seen many people with ones very similar or exact to this one. So yeah i think its definately Australian made and imported to Canada. Looks very well kept and clean, unlike my Aunts which is missing most of the writing on the console and has a cracked lid. When you pull the timer out to start the bit of brown plastic on the front comes off too.
Catch it if you can :-)

Definately...

ronhic's profile picture
....an Aussie made Hoover of either 4kg or 5kg capacity...

Robust, reliable and most if not all parts should still be available.

Tim,

Hoover made full sized automatics in Oz until around 2005ish, when through a cruel twist of fate they actually became part of Electrolux.....and you have not seen the same machine with a 'Simpson' nameplate - when this machine was built, Hoover and Simpson were in direct competition with each other

Australian Hoover Top Loader

The pictured machine is an Australian Hoover Premier 510 designed and manufactured at Hoover's Meadowbank factory in Sydney. Production of this machine started on the 21st of April 1986 and continued, in modified form, until 1999 when the factory was closed down. Two models were made initally, this one, which is a 4 kg capacity and the 570 which is 5 kg. The difference being a different beige control panel and graphics and a higher water level. The 4 kg model could be converted to 5 kg by swapping the pressure switch which controls the water levels. I was unaware that the early models were exported, is this a 110 volt / 60 Hz machine?
If you have purchased this machine Guy I can supply more details. Regards, Meadowbank.

The seller,

got back to me today. It is available. I'll see if I can't get over to it on Saturday! It's possibly a couple of hours away! I fiqured it was just a Hitachi model, but now I'm quite interested in it because it's from Australia.

Just don't....

.....forget the lint filter which is under the softener cup..

Grasp the top of the softener cup and twist and lift the centre part of the agitator out. There should be a small net bag attached at the bottom....

USA Full Size Hoovers

Dave, I'm not sure, I ran into a full size unit in the dump and it had the Hoover tag that read North Canton, OH, I assumed it was made there. However for something that was rebadged, it's very Hooverish, just with the style and layout. A Blackstone is rare enough here, but a re-badged Blackstone seems like an impossible to find machine. Didn't someone here have a full size set?

Manufacturing location

Tim, the North Canton, OH address on the Hoover tag is because that is where the main offices of Hoover were located. For example, a Sears Kenmore says "Sears, Roebuck and Co., Chicago, IL" as that's their main office location, while the machines were made by Whirlpool in Clyde or Marion, OH or elsewhere depending on the item. But Whirlpool is not mentioned on the tag because they make them under contract to Sears. Therefore, Blackstone wouldn't be mentioned on the Hoover tag for the same reason.

Surely you are missing the point

As the Aussie guys said earlier, the machines were manufactured in Australia by HOOVER, origionally to a Blackstone design, of which this is a derivation. It would be interesting though to see what voltage etc. it is.

...is easy to check. You can see the rating plate in the first photo on the left hand side top rear near the water level switch...
