Hi Everyone! Thought everybody would like to see our 72 portable Roto-Rack dishwasher, got from Craigslist for $75.00.
From the looks of it, it hasn't been used in a long time, was fairly dusty.
Is in great shape, tines are in perfect condition, timer and lights work, Roars and throws water big time!!

Thanks Rich. I have such fond memories of our 1970 and 1972 RotoRacks. I particularly liked the pump, which was a bit different in how it started up, in the 1972 model. The closeups are greatly appreciated (sniffle sniffle).

love your roto rack!

rollermatic's profile picture
i use my top load version all the time and as you said it really heats that water in the sani rinse! everything always comes out clean.

i have a front loader like yours with the yellow racks i got from a guy in tenn last year but it has a bad leak around the left side of the door. seeing your pics and how much fun you're havin with your machine is prompting me to get mine out and work on it some more.

they really were unique dishwashers in the 60's and 70's with that top roto rack design. i used to love looking at them in the sears catalog!

pumps and motors are still available and plentiful too should you ever need them.

great pics! loved lookin at them!!!

Grew up with a permanently installed version of that machine.

Was a model-year later, in that momma's had a "hot" and "cool" dry selector.

Hers was a model "up" with two lights over those elongated pushbuttons and four neon indicator lights for temeperature behind script writing saying:

"COOL"
"NORMAL"
"SANI" and
(time) "DELAY"

The sequences were W-R-R-W-R-R-Dry for the "Normal" wash. Light wash was R-W-R-R-Dry (which was the cycle of choice in our home; everything was pre-washed to within an inch of its life).

The bad thing about the fan is that it sucked out. Rotted all the cabinetry. If it blew in, it would have rusted and rotted all the wiring in the front foor wiring "chase". (See panel #39971 for the air vents at the bottom of the door).

The only air vent to the outside from the front of the machine was surrounding the door latch slot which was I'd say was 4 inches(102mm), or maybe slightly less in width.

Mother toggle's model had the loudest blower fan. Had to wedge a thin board between it and the body of machine (procelain tub) to keep vibrations tolerable.

Have fun with it its a powerhouse. Be careful with acids (coffee, lemon juice, vinegar, wine tomato sauce/juice) they will dissolve the porcelain.

That's the exact model we had - our first dishwasher, in white with avocado trim around the work-top. Looks like that machine had a wash-arm transplant at some point.

This is my current Roto - a never used 74 from Denver. They are fun machines.

Wash-arm

roto204's profile picture
Good eye, Greg--I thought the Rotos had the wide-slot arms; the many-small-holed arms came later (so I thought). Great arm, though--I prefer that one to the version with slots.

What is that shield over the sump for? I never could figure that out, and the later models with the standard middle wash-arm and square upper-rack seemed to omit it. (Makes removing the wash-arm support a relative PITA.)

Sump cover D&M dishwashers

combo52's profile picture
The black Bakelite cover was to hide the rust in the sump area that often showed up before the year warranty was over. D&M dishwashers from about 1967 on were at least a tie for the worst built dishwashers ever the late 70s early 80s White-Westinghouse machines were about as bad. The D&Ms had some fun features and ever one remembers them but the only ones you will ever see today in good shape had very little use.

Rich first congratulations on that dishwasher way cool machine.
I never knew that model machine could clean so well looks like dried cat food which is so hard to come off what a great load.
Amazing!
I still don't understand why people rinse and wash dishes even in today's dish machines it truly truly baffles me.
Even when you show them. It is very hard to break ones habits.
Good luck with your dishwasher.

I have to admit, this is a fun machine to use and play with! Im learning more about it all the time, thanks to chris.
I agree, it baffles me why people pre-wash/rinse dishes, why bother having a dishwasher, that can handle DIRTY dishes if your going to go through all that?
We're going to have fun using this machine!

Rotorack!

Rich
This is really awsome dishwasher. I remember these well but didn't have much loading experience with the rotorack. I might have been a little hesitant to load those plastic containers on the bottom. But I guess they didnt melt. Also I always liked the machines that dont have the towers. I had more loading experience with loading the square upper rack d&m sears machines! It would be awsome if this machine had a window and be able to watch the rotorack revolve! Also how is it loading the tall glasses on the roto rack?

rich, I realized after we'd chatted the otehr night I forgot to mention the top rack is adjustable in height. Ours stayed in the higher position all the time. And oh yeah, you most definitely qualify for a BobLoad in there. It looks just like I loaded it, although I would have put the plastic stuff on the top rack. Interesting dishes, love the avocado green au-gratins the best.

Peter: I don't have much experiance loading the roto-rack either, but Im learning. I've ran 2 loads since I've got it, and this last load I did, I feel I did much better loading it more properly. The plastic containers did fine, but I would of normally put them in the top rack.(I was trying to fill space where I could)attempting to do a Bob-load, hoping for the best!
Definatly, a window would be awesome to have to see all the action! Loading tall glasses I think would be no problem, thou, I haven't done that YET..Im sure that will change soon.

Bob: Whew! I was hoping It would be a Bob-load! Chris will back me on this one, but I normally underload our maytag, and I don't know why either(He's much better at loading the dishwasher than I am by far) yes, I normally do load plastic stuff on the top rack, but again, I was trying to fill space where I could.
The green Boat dishes are one of my favorites. I grew up with those. It will very interesting to see what we can fit into the Roto-rack. Many different sizes of dishes, glasses, bowls, pots to choose from around here. Chris will have a Hay-Day loading all that!

Rich, ya earned it. Keep in mind ya have to somewhat keep the weiight balanced. The rack can hold pretty tall items. We had very tall ice tea glasses which did fine. Now my mom's crystal water gobblets and some Michelob footed beer glasses were a different story. If not loaded right, the bottoms would kinda reach out and hit the side of the tub as the rack spun around. There are all sorts of ways to load.

that black pump cover was for too, thanks for clearing that one up. obviously it's only purpose was for show, never thought it was to hide rust! always learning here!

that spray arm is the later model, the one i have has the holes in it also but my top loader which is a much earler machine has the old slotted spray arm that i remember so well.

and the spray tubes on the older models are different too, my top loader has the old style and my front loader the newer. i prefer the older on both.

here's a pic of the newer style spray arm

with that round two peice top rack but once you do it is a blast to run! noisy as hell but boy does it clean! as you said with yours that sani rinse is super hot! i sometimes use the extended sani rinse as it's main wash and then run it thru a rinse hold cycle afterwards!

they are not the best machines by far but these old d&m kenmores are so much fun! and such an important part of american dishwasher history! they were a big part of my "sears roebuck cataloging" when i was a kid!

I had the 1972 model about 15 years ago, the botom rusted and started leaking. Growing up we had 2 rotoracks that lasted about 7 years each due to the same issues. I finally cinvinced my father to get a KitchenAid. The rotoracks were neat dishwashers though.

What happened to DM? What was the last year they built dishwashers? Did they make anything else? I never realized until years later that Sears dishwashers were not built by Whirlpool.

Peter, your model like Rich's is newer than his because of the energy saver hot dry/cool dry rocker switch. That feature was included in the very last of the rotorack product run--year or 18 months at the most I believe.

Peter, you got a cool looking top loading Lady K!! What year is it? I can see, as you said, it wouldn't be convenate to load.
I didn't realise, that there were a few different lower wash arms. The slotted wash arm, looks very close to our Top loading(70ish?) Whirlpool Custom 70 superwash Dishwasher(we got it last christmas for FREE!) which I haven't but will post some pictures after the holidays.

had to replace the motor cause the bolt sheared off that holds the impeller on. got the motor from larry in parma (he has more). it was a real pain to rebuild (i find d&m's are the worst) but after a lot of cussin i got it finished and boy does it run!

a little critter had made it's home in the control panel (mouse i think from the size of it's nest) and had eaten thru about 6 of the wires. they were all white and yellow so it took a bit of tinkering to get them spliced. but it runs great, all lites work, all cycles too. i use it as a daily machine even if it is a pain to load. that top rack really spins fast too! love to pop the lid open quickly to catch a glimpse of it (and get a blast of water in the face).

i love roto racks, all colors, all types! something about that top round rack that just makes me smile! it's so 60's to me! the sears catalog was my main reading material in the 60's and these d&m kenmores used to fascinate me for hours!

i remember in the catalog it said "torrents of water engulf each rack"! to me that is shakespeare!!!!!
