Any comments on this 80's generation Speed Queen? I might be able to get my hands on one cheap, and in very good shape. It has the SS tub.

Fine washer but LOUD!

You run that and your Norge at the same time and the neighbors will need earplugs! ;-)

Greg:
The Norge isn't that loud. What makes the Marathon louder than a modern SQ? Just noise insulation or a different design?

When you say its in good shape, have you taken the front off to have a look.

Unless it's had a lower seal replacement, it's probably either leaking or will be due for one in the not to distant future.

I've picked up many of these that look great, until you take the front off and see the water damage.

Oy! I don't need another machine on the operating table right now. Do I just look for pee spots on the base and tub supports?

If its open, check for water marks on the cabinet and water damage/arcing on the motor.

If you can run it through a cycle with the front off, you'll see very quickly if it's leaking.

I have to agree with Greg. I have heard both the 80s Speed Queen run as well as the Norge (my sister had the Magic Chef branded one, also 80s), and either one could wake the dead. I will say the Norge is a little more fun to watch with the fountain filter.

Have a good one,
James

Since it's freezing out here now thanks to the Mid-west winds, I think I'm going to pass up the SQ. Besides, leaky 1-18 and rusty Norge will keep me busy for a while. BTW, my Magic Chef Norge is not loud at all. It's not Maytag quiet, but what it?

Yeah!!!

The Norge is not as quiet as a Maytag...because it actually washes the clothes!!!! the Norge agitates about as fast on low speed as the Maytag does on hi.

Hmmmm:
I don't think the Norge is has many more OPM's than the later helical drive Tags. The arc is about the same too. IMO they are both excellent at washing.

Why!!!!

Because he said it was fraying the edges of his clothes, true it was rough on stuff, but for nasty clothes, greasy mechanics clothes,I still say nothing beats NORGE,to keep peace,I gave in,but the Whirlpool im using now does about as good," A belt drive" now you know I had a 806 after the Norge, but I made it GO AWAY!!!

Buy a DD Whirlpool shredder and hubby will be begging to have the Norge back.
